“We had some neighbors that didn’t like the traffic,” Davis said. “We were on a dead-end road, so they signed a petition to say, ‘Hey, no more lights.’ And my husband said, ‘You can either buy all the houses in the neighborhood or find another place.’ So I counted all the homes—23—not economical. I didn’t know what bank I was going to rob to do that, so we found this land.”

Which brings us here:

The 10th anniversary of what began as a call to nostalgia.

Free to the public, this experience is driven by something greater.

“It’s not the best financial thing to do, but it’s important to the heart,” Davis said. “There are so many people where this is the only thing they get for Christmas. When they tell Santa what they want, sometimes it’s just food. There are so many people who just need the magic of Christmas in their life.”

And that magic comes handmade.

“If you see a Frozen character, one of those characters took 16 hours just to put lights on one character," Davis said. “That’s how time-consuming it is.”

Beginning in May, Carmela and her team start setting up decorations for Carmela’s Magical Santa Land.

While they don’t know the exact number of lights, they estimate there are between 15 and 20 million bulbs on the property, with more than 500,000 shining in the Winter Wonderland lake alone.

And you’ll never see the same Santa Land twice—

“We watch what pictures are posted to see what people like—what can I add to be different and make sure you don’t come through and say, ‘Oh, it’s the same as last year.’ There’s always something different,” Davis said.

Carmela said creating Christmas spirit makes every inflatable, late night of decorating, and each light bulb worth the effort.

“Every year you kind of get tired and think, ‘Okay, no more,’ Davis said, ”But it doesn’t take but one kid, and you say, ‘Okay, this’ll happen again.’”

Carmela’s Magical Santa Land remains open from now until January 4th and is open from 5:30 - 9:30 every night.
