The South Bay Dementia Education Consortium was founded in the spring of 2017 by Dr. David Hart<\/b>, Director of Community Health at Always Best Care Torrance, who identified a gap in in-person dementia education programming in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. At the time, the vast majority of workshops, trainings, and events were concentrated on the Westside and in downtown Los Angeles \u2014 often more than an hour\u2019s drive from the South Bay. Dr. Hart partnered with other organizations already offering dementia education to pool their collective experience, expertise, connections to leading experts in the field, and marketing databases in order to expand access to educational programming closer to home for South Bay families. Always Best Care Senior Services has served as a founding member of the Consortium since its inception, and Dr. Hart continues to serve as the Consortium\u2019s founding chair. Since its founding nine years ago, the Consortium has delivered more than 30 educational programs to an estimated 1,800 participants facing the challenges of dementia care.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

South Bay Dementia Education Consortium
\u2013 Caregiver Education Series<\/span><\/h2> \n <\/div>\n
\n

The South Bay Dementia Education Consortium is a collaborative partnership among Always Best Care Senior Services, the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s Los Angeles, Beach Cities Health District, the Mary S. Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Research and Care at UCLA, OPICA Adult Day Care and Counseling Center, and Silverado Memory Care that provides evidence-based educational programs that equip people living with dementia, family caregivers, care partners, and professionals with practical knowledge and resources to support planning across the dementia journey. The Consortium hosts four educational events each year, reaching approximately 50\u2013100 participants per event. Programming covers topics such as caregiver support, research updates, and financing long-term care, helping caregivers build the knowledge and confidence needed to serve as informed partners in advance care planning and dementia care. For example, its July 2026 workshop, Protecting Your Loved One: Legal Planning for Dementia Care, engaged 94 participants and provided medical and legal guidance on advance health care directives, powers of attorney, decision-making capacity, trusts, estate planning, and long-term care options.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n

\n November 12, 2026: Hard Talks: The conversations caregiving families avoid \u2014 and how to finally have them.<\/b><\/span> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

A workshop for people who freeze, avoid, or shut down when conflict shows up \u2014 especially in caregiving families trying to make hard decisions together. Participants learn to recognize their own conflict response, then build two practical skills: nonviolent communication for expressing needs without blame, and active listening for really hearing someone else. The goal isn’t to win the conversation \u2014 it’s to resolve it, not extend it, and to learn that advocating for yourself is what makes it possible to truly advocate for someone you love.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
