BOULDER — The Colorado Buffaloes' defensive communication woes reared its ugly head again in Saturday's 42-17 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils.

On a third-and-3 for Arizona State early in the third quarter, linebacker Reggie Hughes did just about everything in his power to catch the attention of a Colorado teammate, jumping around and waving his arms to indicate a pre-snap change was needed. Ignored and ultimately out of position when the ball was snapped, Hughes watched ASU wide receiver Derek Eusebio beat Isaiah Hardge on a crossing route and run free for a 68-yard touchdown.

The touchdown gave Arizona State a 21-14 lead following a 2-point conversion.

"Just trying to get a teammate's attention for pre-snap alignment," Hughes said of the play. "We had some new things going on tonight due to unfortunate injuries, so we had to move some guys around. I'm working with them, knowing who's supposed to be where. I was trying to get guys lined up."

Defensive backs DJ McKinney, Carter Stoutmire, Ben Finneseth and RJ Johnson were all sidelined due to injuries, allowing Hardge, Ivan Yates, Teon Parks, Makari Vickers and others increased opportunities. On that occasion and others, Colorado's piecemealed defense proved costly.

Still, coach Deion Sanders wasn't willing to blame the plethora of injuries for Colorado's eighth loss of the season.

"It's not an excuse," Sanders said. "We just played a team that didn't have its starting quarterback, and they were missing a few other young men as well, so we're not the only ones with an injury. I'm not gonna make an excuse for that. We've got to do a better job. We compile the roster. We've got to do a better job of roster management and so forth, because you've got a plan for this kind of stuff."

On the ground and through the air, Colorado's defense allowed far too many big plays on Saturday. Three of ASU's five touchdowns were plays of 33 yards or longer, and two other gains went for over 40 yards. All told, Arizona State racked up 580 yards, including 288 from running back Raleek Brown

Colorado's defense deserves some praise for forcing four turnovers, although only three points resulted from them.

“I'm not here to downplay any phase of our team — special teams, offense, or defense," Hughes said. "We have to be better in situations. No matter if we get on the field consecutively or we get turned over and have to come right back, we just have to be better and execute it. Don't matter what the situation is."

Hughes closed his final game at Folsom Field with four total tackles and a quarterback hurry.

The University of Colorado Board of Regents at its Nov. 6 meeting approved plans that pave a path forward for new student housing along Colorado Avenue in Boulder—a critical strategic investment in student success, affordability and sustainability.

The approval allows CU Boulder to enter into a public-private partnership with developer Morgan Stone Everett to construct suite- and apartment-style student housing near the intersection of Colorado Avenue and Regent Drive. The project is expected to house about 1,650 students.

Construction could begin as early as summer 2026, with a targeted opening in fall 2028.

“We know that student housing—and student housing that is close, on campus and affordable—is one of the most critical tactics that we can do to improve our student outcomes, student success and, ultimately, graduation,” said Todd Haggerty, CU Boulder’s senior vice chancellor for finance and business, who presented the project.

In addition to offering market-competitive rental rates, the project supports broader campus goals related to sustainability and community impact.

The units will match campus aesthetics and be powered solely by electricity, making it one of the largest student housing developments in the country to run on electric power. Its proximity to campus will reduce reliance on cars, cutting down on traffic congestion and emissions, and the design is intended to improve cyclist and pedestrian safety.

CU Boulder representatives have met with community members four times this fall to discuss the project and address neighbors’ concerns related to size, utilities and shade created by the project. They will continue to provide regular updates to the community as the project progresses.

Code Talker Hall

The board unanimously approved the naming of a new 332-bed residence hall on the Boulder campus as Code Talker Hall, honoring the legacy of Native American Code Talkers who played a pivotal role in the Allied victories during World Wars I and II.

Scheduled to open in fall 2026 in the north Boulder Creek neighborhood of Main Campus, the hall was previously referred to as “Residence One.” The new name reflects a deep respect for the historical significance of the land. This naming not only commemorates the heroic contributions of Code Talkers and veterans but also supports CU Boulder’s land acknowledgment by recognizing the 48 tribal nations with historical and present ties to Colorado.

“Far too often, we think that doing land acknowledgements or something similar is the most we can do, and the truth is, it’s the least we can do,” said Regent Nolbert Chavez. “So doing this and taking steps towards recognizing the sacrifices folks have made and the contributions they have made is a step forward.”

Code Talker Hall will stand as a permanent tribute to Indigenous excellence, resilience and cultural pride, embodying the university’s commitment to honoring the past while educating future generations.

Arapahoe Avenue purchase

Regents also approved the acquisition of a property located at 2350 Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder, marking a strategic milestone in CU Boulder’s long-term campus development plan.

The 0.67-acre parcel, which includes a commercial building currently leased to El Rincón Cocina y Tequila restaurant, is surrounded on three sides by university-owned land. The acquisition completes CU Boulder’s northeast gateway to Main Campus, aligning with the 2021 Campus Master Plan and enabling future academic, residential or mixed-use redevelopment in a transit-oriented corridor.

No immediate changes are planned for the property, and CU Boulder plans to continue leasing the building to El Rincón for the foreseeable future.

The $3.925 million purchase, funded entirely through CU Boulder Real Estate Services and General Campus Reserves, will not involve any debt issuance, ensuring that the investment does not impact tuition or operational budgets. The property will continue to generate rental income in the near term, offsetting holding costs while the university shapes a long-term vision for the site.

Wayfinding revamp: A clearer path ahead

Wristbands will be granted upon entry. Wristbands are needed for entry to the event. No re-entry will be allowed once attendees enter the venue and leave.

The James Beard Foundation named Frasca Food and Wine in Boulder an “outstanding restaurant” in the country this year. Co-founder and sommelier Bobby Stuckey is also this year’s Julia Child Award recipient.

Colorado Matters asked Stuckey to recommend three out-of-the-ordinary wines for Thanksgiving under $30 — one to pair with turkey, another with ham, and a third with a vegetarian spread.

Like his restaurant, Stuckey’s selections reflect his passion for Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a wine-producing region of northeast Italy. If you are unable to find a given label, Stuckey recommends asking your wine seller to find something similar.

“I love bubbles during the holiday season — be it champagne, prosecco or cava. They're cleansing and refreshing for the table. This one is dry. Not to get too technical, but it's about four grams per liter of residual sugar (RS). Most proseccos or other sparkling wines are 13-plus. This is as crispy and crunchy as you can get. In Italy, we call this varietal pinot nero (pinot noir in France).”

“I've never met Mother Nature, but I think when she created this varietal, she closed her eyes and she thought of the citrus notes of great sauvignon blanc. But this herbaceous note that you would get of Grüner Veltliner or Alsatian pinot gris. It kind of builds those two aromatics. It's a varietal that's really great with vegetables because there's an herbiness to it. On the flip side, it's great with prosciutto di San Daniele, which is from Friuli. It’s what I would call a great food wine.”

I chose a Barbera. I would call this a medium red. I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but it’s like the gateway drug to Italian red wine drinking. It’s low-tannin, so it doesn’t grip your mouth like cabernet. But it has this incredible fruit acid. Think about Barbera as like a plum. It’s got that tartness to go with so many dishes.
