Part of a new wave of light pilsners that feature more or different varieties of hops than are typically used in them, this 5.4% ABV Great American Beer Festival gold-medal winner is brewed using Mosaic, Citra and HBC 586 hops to give it very tropical notes. But because this is a lager, those notes come in like an island breeze, rather than a gale.
Some of the best ales these days are lagers. Which is funny since the two are distinctly different kinds of beers with different histories and processes for brewing. My point, though, is that lagers have exploded in number in the past five years, and you can now find a dozen or more different styles or variations on styles on the shelves in Colorado at any time. One of those is the rich and malty Volksbier Vienna lager made by Wibby Brewing, which comes across almost like an amber or red ale, with its rounded sweetness and smooth-drinking feel.
One part nostalgia, one part relief from the overwhelming number of IPAs and lagers out there, 90 Shilling is an OG Colorado beer that both commands respect and fades into the background — a perfect combination when what you are doing is more important than what you are drinking. First brewed in 1989, this Scotch ale is one of the Fort Collins brewery’s oldest and most renowned offerings. Coming in at 5.3% ABV, it is amber in color, has a rich aroma and is bound to please.
Loaded with flavors of guava, elderberry and acai and aromas of pineapple and mango, Odell’s Sippin’ Pretty is fruit punch in a can — and with its ruby red color, it looks the part, as well. Slightly tart and slightly sweet (and just 4.5% ABV), it’s a refreshing change from classic beer styles when you require something different.
The cantaloupe-colored Saison, brewed with elderflower and pressed carrot juice, is a Great American Beer Festival gold medal winner — as well as the beer that former Vice President Kamala Harris walked out the door with when she visited Ratio in March 2024. Smooth, and boasting a touch of sweet vanilla and a balanced profile, King of Carrot Flowers has gotten more and more popular over the years, to the point where Ratio now brews it year-round.
Say what you will about Oskar Blues (and people have plenty to say) but it’s been making a Colorado classic for a long time. The company, which went from tiny brewpub to statewide superstar to a venture-capital-backed conglomerate — and now a division of the Monster energy drink company — was the first craft brewer to put beer in a can (and in a can it remains). Dale’s Pale Ale was that beer. Brewed with Cascade, Centennial and Comet hops, it’s a tribute to old-school IPAs, blasting out a much-loved piney profile, backed by aromatic maltiness. It’s recognizable anywhere.
Rare Trait was one of the first beers that Cerebral made when it opened just off Colfax Avenue in 2015, and it is still the brewery’s flagship beer, so much so that Cerebral celebrates it with an entire week of variations each year. But Rare Trait was also one of the first hazy, or New England-style, IPAs to be made in Colorado, and it remains one of the best. Loaded with a heady mix of Mosaic, El Dorado and Mosaic hops (a combination that has come to define hazy IPAs), it is almost entirely without bitterness while being rich and full on the palate.
Aromatic, charismatic and loaded with orange juice-like flavor, In The Steep is a straightforward beer in the sometimes complicated world of hazy IPAs. Brewed with the most popular hop variety used today, it’s a smoothly drinkable — almost pillowy soft — beer with a sweet undertone and no bitterness whatsoever. It’s one of the few beers from Frisco’s Outer Range that is widely available on a fairly consistent basis, and it’s worth buying whenever you see it.
It’s hot outside, so we’re not thinking about stouts right now. But we are thinking about camping, and it’s hard to beat Graham Cracker Porter as a campfire beer, especially since it actually does have strong notes of graham crackers in it. This was one of the first two beers that Denver Beer Co. brewed when it opened way back in 2011 and has been one of the company’s best beers ever since, winning multiple awards and becoming a standard for people all over the state. Coming in at 5.6% ABV, GCP tastes like graham cracker crust in a can.

The property has 2.5 miles of trails winding through its native plant refuge, plus wildflower gardens and ample bird-watching opportunities. The folks at the festival were even thoughtful enough to offer free “pumpkin day care,” so you can leave your precious picks safely under their watch while you explore all 700 acres. Don’t forget to BYOW (bring your own wagon) if you plan on picking several squashes.
With nearly 75 acres to roam, you’re guaranteed to hit your step goal at Fritzler Farms. There’s a pumpkin cannon, go-karts, a giant slide, mini golf, human foosball, and a 14-acre pumpkin patch, where folks can choose from more than 20 varieties. Owner Trevor Fritzler’s pride and joy, though, is the farm’s famous (and elaborate) 15-acre corn maze. In past years, the design has featured a tribute to his parents, a patriotic bald eagle, and the Denver Broncos logo, which is how this patch earned the number-two spot. This year’s design is an ode to the new theme of the farm’s after-dark experience, “Scream Acres: The Curse of the Blood Moon.” Stick around after sunset for fireworks on select Fridays and to find out if you’re brave enough to face the blood moon. First responders and vets should mark October 4 and 5 on their calendars: They’ll get free admission with an ID.
At Miller Farms, visitors are treated to a hayride through 180 acres of fields, where you can pick organic, pesticide-free pumpkins, as well as potatoes, carrots, onions, beets, corn, squash, peppers, and more. The price of admission includes up to four bags of vegetables per person—including the big-ticket gourds—so choose wisely. If you don’t want to get your hands dirty, visit the customer-favorite “Wagon Sale,” where you can fill a red wagon with all the pre-picked produce you can fit for only $50.
The festival also features classic attractions like corn mazes, an antique tractor alley, a hay bale pyramid, and lawn games. Don’t miss out on the “Croc-pit”—a play pit filled with thousands of cut-up Crocs given to the farm by the Broomfield-based company when it nearly went out of business in 2018. All of this affordable (and unconventional) fall fun earned Miller Farms the number-three spot on our list. Don’t forget to fill out the farm’s waiver while you’re making the roughly 40-minute drive to this pumpkin party.

This haunt’s wallet-friendly pumpkin prices earned it the number-four spot on our list, but there’s so much more to do than peruse the patch. Fight off zombies with corn cannons, race pedal cars, and try your hand at foam ball archery. The festivities also include two themed corn mazes: Farm Scene Investigation and Monster Mystery.
Save money on gas and put it toward gourds at this close-to-home patch in Aurora. Nick’s Garden Center and Farm Market throws an annual Fall Fest for all the Denverites who hate driving, earning it the number-five spot on our list. Here, you’ll find a variety of pumpkins to choose from, plus activities for every kind of kiddo. There are no tickets required to enter, and it’s free to enjoy the straw maze, Professor Pumpkin story time, kid’s play area, and tons of games. The fest also offers pedal karts, kettle corn, an inflatable obstacle course, mini golf, rubber ducky races, and train rides through a haunted tunnel for an additional charge. Pro tip: Stop by this daily fall festival on a weekday to avoid the crowds and get your garden shopping done at the same time with help from their friendly and knowledgeable staff (the fall sale includes 40 percent off evergreens, perennials, glazed pottery, shrubs, and more).

DENVER — A cold front arrived in Colorado for the start of autumn, bringing rain, snow and cooler temperatures.
The 9NEWS Weather Impact Team issued a Weather Impact Alert for Tuesday due to the temperature drop, Denver-area rain and the first notable Colorado mountain snow of the season.

A Winter Weather Advisory, the first anywhere across the state of Colorado in four months, was issued for the higher elevations across Colorado's central and northern mountains.
Rain fell steadily in the high country Tuesday afternoon, with a light mist settling on roads in areas near Georgetown and Idaho Springs by the evening.
The moisture was just enough to make roads wet for people trying to move through.
Throughout the day, clouds covered much of Guanella Pass as rain coated the trees and temperatures dropped.
But Tuesday's rainy forecast wasn't enough to keep Marina Duran away from the mountains. The Denver native decided to come check out the fall colors with friends.
She expected the rain, but not the snow in the forecast. Duran said they'll head back to town Tuesday night to avoid that first snow of the season on the interstate.
“I didn’t know it was going to snow, but I mean, that’s normal I guess, to be expected," she said. "I’m not driving, so I wasn’t that concerned about it.”
Twenty miles and 3,000 feet of elevation up the road, Berthoud Pass got its first snow of the season Tuesday. The wintry weather has gotten a warm greeting from folks ready for the freeze, eager to see the return of snow on the ground and hopefully soon, skiing season.
By Tuesday night in Georgetown, none of the snow that was expected showed up -- at least not yet.
The temperatures were just a little too warm to keep the rain from turning the mountains even more picturesque, for now. That's good news for leaf peepers hoping to make their way to the mountains.
"I’m glad I got to see it. I hope more people come up to see it, because it’ll be gone soon," Duran said.
Colorado dries out and warms up for Wednesday. There could be some patchy frost Wednesday in some very outlying areas on the eastern plains. The Denver metro area will stay comfortably above freezing.
The rest of the week is trending warm and dry, with highs spiking back into the 70s and 80s in Denver with no meaningful rain chances again until next week.
