Cyclones praise Bristow as one of team’s potential ‘x-factors’

AMES — Coming off of a bounce-back win, in which Iowa State demolished St. Thomas on both sides of the ball, came some promise that they could keep this performance going throughout the rest of the season.

One player in particular stood out in the Cyclones’ win versus the Tommies, and that would be forward Jalynn Bristow. In that game, Bristow collected 10 points off the bench, along with five rebounds and an assist.

This was the first time this season Bristow had reached the double-digit mark in points, as she has had some struggles early on this season of having shots fall in the few attempts she has put up each game.

But her struggles might have stemmed from being away from home as a college athlete, as it was a big difference for her to move so far away from home and be with a whole new group of people she had never met before.

Head coach Bill Fennelly noticed the struggles she faced for being away from home for the first time and saw her start to grow and get adjusted to her new life as a student-athlete.

“She struggled early,” Fennelly said. “Every kid goes through some level of homesick, but she seemed to have a whole nother level of it.”

Bristow admitted that her play faltered by the fact that she could not have her family by her side to cheer her on, but soon realized the reality of it and came to terms with what her future was going to look like.

“My play was definitely affected by it,” Bristow said. “I’ve never been this far from my mom and my brothers who usually came to my games, so talking through it with my mom and the coaches made it clear that it’s time to get going.”

Center Audi Crooks sees the potential that Bristow could bring to the team and looks forward to seeing her grow as a player who could help the team find success down the stretch.

“She’s definitely a very versatile player,” Crooks said. “She’s a matchup nightmare since she can play almost anywhere and is a really important piece to this team.”

Fennelly also sees the potential in Bristow to become the so-called ‘x-factor’ that Iowa State could use to win games throughout the rest of the season, especially when it comes to Big 12 conference play.

“She could be,” Fennelly said. “Everyone’s different in their skill sets, but she just instinctively knows how to play and find the ball which could make her a very good player.”

The last game the Cyclones played at Hilton Coliseum was nearly two weeks ago when they beat Southern. Now, Iowa State will have five straight home games to finish the non-conference portion of the schedule.

Freshmen Audi Crooks and Jalynn Bristow said they are glad to be back in Ames to play in front of the home crowd.

“It’s nice to be home,” Crooks said. “I’m excited to see the fans and just have that energy back. Even though they brought it to Minnesota, it’s nice to be back on the home court.”

“It’s going to be great,” Bristow said. “It’s going to be better than our away game. We’ll have more fans. Our fans showed out in St. Paul, so we expect nothing less.”

Iowa State will start the home push against North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). The Seahawks have had a rough start to the season, currently sitting at a 2-4 record, and the Cyclones will be the first Power Five team they play this season.

Adapting to the Seahawks’ play style is the main focus for head coach Bill Fennelly.

“They play a different style than we’ve seen, and that’s part of what happens in non-conference games,” Fennelly said. “Offensively, they’re gonna play a little slower and they’re gonna make you guard. They play a really good 3-2 zone, and no one really plays 3-2 zone against us.”

UNCW has had trouble with turnovers, much like Iowa State, and scoring has been an issue for UNCW as well. The Seahawks average 22.2 turnovers per game and have a shooting percentage of 34.6% from the field.

Crooks and Bristow said the St. Thomas game was viewed as a big confidence builder for the team. They expect the UNCW game to play out similarly, both confidence-wise and from a playing-time perspective for many players on the team.

Much like the St. Thomas game, Fennelly expects a lot of the Cyclones to get playing time against UNCW. Fennelly mentioned in games where players for Iowa State have fouled out, it is because they are playing for longer periods of time.

“We do not have a player, or players, that you think ‘Okay, for sure they’re going to play X amount of minutes,’” Fennelly said. “They’re all going to play, it’s just every game’s a little bit different.”

The Cyclones season will continue at 1 p.m. Sunday when UNCW comes to Ames. The game can be viewed on ESPN+.

Jalynn Bristow, a 6-foot-2 forward from Wichita Falls, Texas, announced her commitment to Iowa State on Wednesday night. Bristow is ranked a four-star recruit by ESPN, which also lists her as the 48th-best prospect in the Class of 2023.

“She’s just got an amazing natural shooting touch and shoots around 40% from 3, makes 90% of her foul shots and makes everything in the lane,” said Bristow’s AAU coach, Bill Franey. “Her long arms allow her to block a lot of shots.”

Bristow, who attends Rider High School, estimates she had over 30 scholarship offers. Her pick ultimately came down to Iowa State, Gonzaga, Penn State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. Bristow said the Cyclones managed to set themselves apart after her visit to Ames in January.

“Definitely the environment,” she said. “They just proved the family environment, the support in the gym when they played and the fan base. It was awesome.”

Bristow is the third known commitment in the class for Iowa State. The Cyclones previously landed a pair of Iowans in Arianna Jackson and Kelsey Joens. Jackson plays at Des Moines Roosevelt. Joens plays at Iowa City High.

It has turned into a big week for the sixth-ranked Cyclones, who won at Kansas Wednesday night and moved to 23-4 on the season and 12-3 in Big 12 play. Iowa State is tied with Baylor for first place in the Big 12. Bristow, who has watched the success unfold, is excited to be a part of the action.

"I am so excited," she said. "When I announced it (Wednesday) night I couldn't stop smiling."

– Peaster, Jim Ned (Tuscola) and Fairfield in the title game. The state champion Eagles had early-season losses to Glen Rose, which finished No. 2, and Lipan, which won the Class 2A state championship and finished ranked No. 12.

Upperman (Baxter) comes in at No. 3 after reaching the Class 3A quarterfinals in Tennessee while South Dakota state champion Hamlin (Hayti) and Illinois state champion Okawville comes in at No. 5.

The Iowa City Board of Adjustment denied the sorority’s request to replace its windows during its weekly meeting Wednesday night.

The University of Iowa’s Chi Omega sorority will not be installing new windows on the main level of its home.

The Iowa City Board of Adjustment unanimously voted to uphold the Historic Preservation Commission’s decision to deny the sorority’s request for window replacements on Wednesday night.

The commission previously failed to approve a Certificate of Appropriateness for the project at 805 Iowa Ave. on Jan. 12, citing that the proposed changes did not align with the guidelines for protected properties in the College Hill Conservation District.

Commission staff found the windows to “be in good condition” and noted that the proposal “would remove and replace historic wood windows that are not deteriorated,” which violates section 4.13 of the Iowa City Historic Preservation Handbook.

The handbook’s guidelines state that the commission recommends the repair of historic windows before replacement is considered and requires that replaced windows have similar characteristics and appearances to the original windows.

“The goal of the historical preservation and design review is to retain the historical character of the neighborhoods,” Jessica Bristow, Iowa City’s historic preservation planner, said. “We do that by retaining the historical character of the individual properties, and we do that by retaining the original material.”

Bristow added that the commission works with applicants to derive solutions.

“Our applications are not just a you submit the application and then we approve or deny whatever you have,” Bristow said. “We work with the applicant to come up with something that is approvable.”

James Phelps, a senior architect from Streamline Architecture who worked with Chi Omega on the project, asked the board to consider the previous renovations to the windows completed in 2016 to the backside of the house in collaboration with Streamline architects.

“We think it’s a reasonable request here considering that over 20 windows in this area have already been replaced,” Phelps said.

Phelps said following the denied request, Chi Omega received a list of recommended window experts. But out of the three he called, only two responded. He said the two experts that returned his calls described either not wanting to do the work or preferring to remove the windows before restoring them.

Additionally, Phelps said the contractors differed in their estimates of the proposed repairs, with a range between $1,000 to $4,000 per window. He said the cost of high-quality Pella windows would be a “fifth that and more”.

While Phelps admitted cost was a concern, he noted that the largest reason for the new windows was for the ease of maintenance new windows would provide.

“One of the huge considerations was the maintenance of it, just clearing a newer window with a title sash. They want to lower the sash down, tilt it in, and wipe it clean, and put it back. Very, very easy,” Phelps said. “I believe the lower windows now have the combination storms. I have the combination storms on my own 1924 house – [it’s] an absolute nightmare to clean.”

Nevertheless, board members quickly pointed out that the Historic Preservation Commission was acting within its regulations.

“Our purview here is extremely limited. You have to show us that the board acted arbitrarily and capriciously, or that they just ignore the law,” Board of Adjustments Vice President Mark Russo said. “The law is pretty clear on this.”

Board of Adjustment member Paula Swygard agreed with Russo.

“I think the process has been followed [and] the process is clear to the applicant,” Swygard said. “The overlay was started in 2003 and the precedent that they keep referring to was prior to that.”

Russo said the Board of Adjustment’s role was to make sure the commission abided by its regulations, which it did.

“Our role isn’t to second guess the historic preservation, but only to say that they follow the guidelines as they exist today,” Russo said. “I haven’t seen any evidence that suggests that the commission of historic preservation has skirted their review process.”
