Coralville's Brrrfest is back and bigger than ever, celebrating Johnson County and Iowa's exploding craft beer scene.

Iowa's second-largest beer festival will serve beverages from 60 Iowa breweries, the event's largest offering in history.

The 12th annual Brrrfest will take place from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Coralville, offer guests an opportunity to sample more than 200 beers.

BrrrFest is in its 12th year and returns to Coralville on Jan .27, with guests able to sample more than 200 beers at the Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

For Backpocket Brewing, BrrrFest is a celebration and a reminder of its legacy in the Coralville and Iowa City community.

"[BrrrFest] is for people who love beer, love craft beer, and love supporting local businesses," said Lo Janoska, social media and event coordinator at Backpocket Brewing. "[Backpocket wants to] bring awareness to the fact that craft beer is not just a summer thing. It's a winter thing as well."

Stay cozy with a well-known and well-attended tradition

Coralville's Backpocket Brewing had a significant hand in creating Iowa's premiere winter beer festival. They approached the city of Coralville more than 12 years ago, using the community's desire for a cold-weather celebration as ammunition.

They wanted to bring the passion for beer to winter's doorstep.

"When Backpocket Brewing opened here in Coralville, one of the things that they said at the time is that there are a lot of festivals in the summertime, but there's none in the wintertime that celebrate the winter beers," said Coralville City Administrator, Kelly Hayworth. "They suggested we do this, so we did, and it's grown from there."

Backpocket was Iowa City's only local craft brewery when BrrFest first started in 2012, as Big Grove Brewery and Reunion had yet to open, according to local beer expert and owner of John's Grocery, Doug Alberhasky.

The area is now loaded with breweries less than 15 years later, bolstered by Big Grove and Reunion as well as Kalona Brewing and newcomer Field Day in North Liberty. Nearby Cedar Rapids also boasts plenty of craft beer options, including Iowa Brewing, Clock House and Lion Bridge.

Brrrfest can now proudly claim it is an exclusively Iowa event.

"[All of the breweries at BrrrFest] are Iowa breweries. When we first started, there weren't enough Iowa breweries to do just that, so we had some from other states," Hayworth said. "The industry has grown that much, so now there are enough. We will have about 10 to 12 new breweries that hadn't been here before."

Craft beer's rapid growth is rather remarkable. Only 58 craft breweries varying in size and distribution dotted the Iowa landscape in 2014. There are now 126 breweries registered with the Iowa Brewers Guild just 10 years later.

A blossoming beer festival

BrrrFest is Iowa's second-largest beer festival, runner-up only to the Iowa Craft Beer Festival, held every summer at Waterworks Park in Des Moines.

Noreen Otto, the executive director of the Iowa Brewers Guild, believes that BrrrFest demonstrates the growing craft beer industry and breaks any misconceptions people might have about beer.

"Craft brewing is really growing beyond what people would have thought of as a craft beer five and six years ago. [We are] seeing more styles, options, and creativity than ever," Otto said. "We invite everyone to come and see the huge range of products our members are putting out. You could go into a brewery and get everything from nonalcoholic beer to these delicious fruited sours.

More and more beers have low ABV, and then you have these released specialty, amazing craft barrel-aged beers for the traditionalists."

General admission tickets for BrrrFest are available for purchase and cost $50, which includes a 2024 BrrrFest commemorative glass and free beer samples throughout the duration of the event.

While BrrrFest is an opportunity for beer enthusiasts to try new beers from assorted breweries across the state, it also has an eye toward community. The North Liberty and Coralville Boy Scout troops volunteer throughout and proceeds support the local brewing industry.

"The proceeds from the festival not only stay in the Coralville community to support community events, but a portion of the proceeds also go to the guild to support the larger community around craft brewing in the state of Iowa," Otto said. "The Iowa Brewers Guild exists to unite craft brewing professionals so our businesses and our breweries can keep growing stronger and putting out even better products."

Herky the Hawkeye will star at this year's FryFest, as hundreds of guests help the University of Iowa mascot celebrate its 75th birthday.

Now in its 14th year, the festival builds anticipation for the upcoming college football season, held the night before the first game. FRYfest started when a council member in Coralville suggested renaming First Ave in Coralville to Hayden Fry Way on the 10th anniversary of the former football coach's retirement.

Think Iowa City decided to unveil the name change at a festival.

"When 20,000 people showed up [to the first FRYfest], we pretty much knew this [would] become an annual thing," said Josh Schamberger, President of Think Iowa City. "A new tradition to usher in the start of the football season. The event gets most of Hawkeye nation to town 24 hours early and brings substantial economic impact to the larger community."

The 2023 version, held at the Iowa River Landing in Coralville, will feel similar to the first year. Attendees can expect the Hawkeye tradeshow, autograph sessions, interactive engagements, the iconic pep rally, as well as live music, from local act Trophy Dads to high-energy cover band POProcks.

"Just a good 'ol high porch picnic, as coach Fry would call it," Schamberger said.

An honorary guest

Herky the Hawkeye will add extra buzz as well.

The Hawkeye mascot has been the symbol of the University of Iowa for three-quarters of a century. Created by Richard Spencer III, an instructor of journalism at the UI, Herky was an instantaneous hit. The mascot became a mainstay as the years wore on, and can now be spotted throughout the Iowa City corridor.

"[Herky is] the best mascot not just in the Big Ten but the country," Schamberger said.

Mascots across Iowa will join the celebration, helping lead a raucous pep rally.

"We also have a very special announcement that the public will love," Schamberger said. "The announcement will be a huge hit."

Coralville will be the temporary home to thousands of bicyclists journeying across Iowa as part of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa for some 24 hours on July 28.

Riders will embark on the 50th anniversary of RAGBRAI July 23 starting in Sioux City, then traveling to Storm Lake, Carroll, Ames, Des Moines, Tama-Toledo, Coralville and completing the ride in Davenport.

Near Coralville, cities including Amana, Oxford and Iowa City will see some good ‘ole RAGBRAI action as bicyclists — many of whom will be decked out in zany costumes — pass through to their next leg.

Whether you’ll be in Coralville just for the night as a RAGBRAI rider or meeting up with loved ones on their journey to the Mississippi River, here’s where to eat, drink and what to do before you depart from the Iowa City area.

Grab juicy birria tacos in Iowa City or wood-fired oven pizza in Coralville

Iowa City and Coralville offer an abundance of good food, whether you want something quick to take on the road or a sit-down meal with friends. Two best bets: Newcomer Barrett’s Quality Eats just opened in Coralville, and Wilson’s Ciderhouse & Venue, a sit-down option located on a 90-acre apple orchard in Iowa City.

For drinks, make like a college student and head to the Airliner, or tip back local beers at ReUnion, BackPocket or Big Grove.

Coralville’s Iowa River Landing is preparing to welcome five new businesses this year.

Blue Agave Mexican Restaurant, which opened its first location in Waukee in 2022, will open its second restaurant this summer in the former La Vecina space in the Madison Building on E 9th St., Coralville. Their menu will offer elevated versions of classics like elotes and street tacos.

X-Golf Simulator, which operates more than 80 locations across the country, will open later this year in the same building. The nearly 8,000 sq. ft. space will house golf simulators, event space and a full-service bar for patrons, who will be able to rent the simulators hourly, join leagues or take lessons.

The Gym, which offers personal training and fitness classes, will also open in the Madison Building.

CIVCO RT, formerly owned by Roper Technologies, will open office spaces above Iowa Athletic Club at 200 E 9th St Suite 205, Coralville.

C.H. Robinson is a transportation company that offers freight transportation, transportation management, brokerage and warehousing.

“We’re excited to welcome these new businesses to the Iowa River Landing in 2023,” said Deanna Printy, Iowa River Landing property manager. “Variety is what sets our neighborhood apart, and we’re thrilled to continue expanding and diversifying what we offer.”

The 41st incoming class of the Leadership for Five Seasons (LFS) program’s 2023-2024 year has been announced.

A total of 35 individuals, representing different businesses and industries around the metro area, were chosen based on their application and a panel interview consisting of LFS alumni.

Nearly 1,400 business professionals have passed through LFS since the program began in 1983.

“LFS empowers participants with a comprehensive understanding of our community’s challenges and opportunities, while also providing broader knowledge of our region and the role future leaders can play as engaged citizens,” said Doug Neumann, executive director of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, which sponsors the LFS program. “Seeing emerging leaders come through the LFS program and continuously engage with the community beyond graduation is one of the many reasons it has been successful.”

The Adult LFS program, a 10-month experience that runs from August through May, is limited to 35 selected applicants each year. Adult participants spend one Friday each month, outside of work, participating in customized leadership training and traveling within the city to learn about different aspects of the community, called “industry days.”

Those days include Agriculture Day, Human Needs Day, Arts & Culture Day, Entrepreneurial Day, Health & Wellness Day, Economic Development Day, Government Day and Education Day.

Industry days are planned by LFS alumni who work within those industries. Each class kicks off with an overnight retreat and culminates with a service day and graduation.

Among a series of housing and commercial development news at a recent Coralville City Council meeting, it was announced indoor golf facillity X-Golf will open at Iowa River Landing.

A plan to enter into a 10-year lease agreement with two five-year options to renew for 211 E. Ninth Street was approved unanimously by city council.

X-Golf is also building a location in Cedar Rapids. It is expected to open in early June at 5235 Buffalo Ridge Dr. Its only other Iowa location is in West Des Moines.

“The X-Golf locations will have golf simulators that can be rented on an hourly basis year-round,” said Bryant Nicholson, a member of the ownership group, told The Gazette. “There will be an opportunity for leagues, lessons, corporate events and more. The locations will offer something for golfers of all ages and levels — from beginner to experienced.”

According to the X-Golf website, each location includes a full bar and club fittings and trade-ins.

In December, an indoor golf facility called Ringer Golf opened in the Czech Village. It utilizes Trackman, a technology that provides ball and player tracking data for each swing.

And in Tiffin, development is underway for Pinseekers, an outdoor golf driving range alongside I-380 that is owned by Topgolf Callaway Brands.

Coralville West

As part of the Coralville West development, city council agreed to rezone a 1.42 acre lot on Spring Rose Circle to make way for a 9,900-square-foot, one-story, multi-tenant, commercial building on vacant land near Bachmeier Carpet One Floor & Home.

Put forward by Advantage Development Inc., construction will begin at 3408 Merchant St. this spring until the fall, reports The Gazette.

Housing

Several housing developments in Coralville were also approved by city council.

Under three separate hearings, site plans for phase two and phase three of the Forevergreen Heights project — which will include 170 single-family residential homes, 40 duplexes and eight fourplexes in total — was unanimously advanced by the council.

There are two builders working on the Forevergreen Heights development. Construction company D.R. Horton is building much of the single-family detached buildings, while single-family attached buildings are being developed by Jason Dumont, said Coralville community development director Dave Johnson.

The Forevergreen Heights master plan was first approved by city council in 2021.

A 36-unit, multi-family residential building with 81 parking spaces on a 1.42 acre lot on Spring Rose Circle by Jajesska LC was advanced April 25 as well. It is the continuation of a development approved by city council in 2018.
