What to know when RAGBRAI comes to Coralville on Friday

CORALVILLE — Coralville has been preparing for months to welcome tens of thousands of cyclists Friday from all over the world during the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.

This year’s RAGBRAI route began July 22 in Sioux City and arrives Friday to stay overnight in Coralville. The cyclists will leave Saturday, going through Iowa City, and head toward Davenport to wrap up the ride.

This is Coralville’s sixth time as an overnight host, and the city recruited more than 900 volunteers for this year’s stop. If you’re traveling through Coralville and Iowa City, plan to allow extra time and use extra caution while driving through Friday or early Saturday.

Coralville is gearing up for a double celebration as RAGBRAI’s 50th year coincides with the city's own 150th anniversary. The theme of Coralville’s overnight stop is "Cheers to the years.”

Mayor Meghann Foster previously told The Gazette how Coralville is well-suited to be an overnight stop for RAGBRAI with hospitality being part of the city’s heritage, along with various options for entertainment, retail and restaurants.

“Coralville knows how to throw a good party,” Foster said.

To get ready for the celebration, here’s what to know about road closures, transportation, entertainment and where to cool off as temperatures continue to climb. The entertainment and various events are free and open to the public.

Friday road closures

Cyclists will enter Coralville from IWV Road to Melrose Avenue and head north on Camp Cardinal Boulevard toward S.T. Morrison Park, where there will be vendors, entertainment and the main stage. Support vehicles will begin arriving Friday morning, with the majority of bicyclists arriving in the afternoon.

Saturday road closures

Cyclists will leave S.T. Morrison Park on Saturday morning and head to Kinnick Stadium and downtown Iowa City toward their final destination of Davenport. The majority of bicyclists will leave between 6 and 10 a.m.

Using public transit and shuttles

Coralville Transit will be free for all passengers Friday and will run regular routes, but delays are anticipated. Use the real-time maps on the Transit app with actual bus locations to locate buses, since the bus arrival times may be inaccurate given the road closures and traffic delays.

What will there be to do?

All entertainment will be in and around S.T. Morrison Park through the day, including concerts, movies, a kids zone, beverage garden, food and other vendors.

The entertainment begins at 10 a.m. Friday and is free and open to the public.

The stage will be set up similarly to how it is during the city’s FourthFest celebration. Rock band Bush will be the headliner, with opening band Plush, an all-female rock group. There also will be magicians, jugglers and local music acts throughout the day. A full entertainment schedule can be found at coralvilleragbrai.com.

The area will have “larger than life” photo murals celebrating Coralville’s 150th anniversary, as well as a mural for RAGBRAI. All of the wheat-pasted murals are being done by artist Isaac Campbell.

Where to cool off

This week has seen some of the hottest weather of the summer and that will continue into Friday.

The Coralville Recreation Center and Northwest Junior High School, which are at the center of the RAGBRAI campus, will be available for anyone who needs to cool off.

The Coralville Center for the Performing Arts will be showing movies from 12:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and is another place to relax and cool off.

The Coralville indoor pool and the Coralville Community Aquatic Center will be open Friday. Admission is $8 a person with a local ID or $9 without a local ID. The indoor pool will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The aquatic center will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The store, located at 901 E. Second Ave. in the Iowa River Landing, opened just in time for holiday meals that may need a new taste. According to owner Andy Haning-Brown, this time of year is the most hectic for the business because of holiday cooking and gift shopping, but they are glad to have opened in time for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday.

The Coralville opening marks the spice store's second location in Iowa, with the first in Des Moines. The AllSpice Culinarium in Coralville opened Nov. 18.

“The weather has cooperated quite a bit,” he said. “The first couple days were great and so it was nice to be able to prop the door open and welcome people in. It’s been steady but not crazy, which I think is a good thing.”

Similar to the original Des Moines location, the Coralville store will introduce new products throughout the year, rotate vinegar and oil flavors, and team up with other local businesses.

“We have several products that right now are all based out of the Des Moines market that are some sort of partnerships,” Haning-Brown said. “One of the things we are looking forward to here is developing some of those same types of collaborations so that we have local things that are unique to the Iowa City-Coralville area.”

The AllSpice Story

Haning-Brown and his husband purchased the small business in 2013, just three years after its opening in the East Village district of Des Moines. After ten years of ownership during which he said he never worked harder, Haning-Brown said one of the best parts of running a small business is the ability to make their own decisions and do it in a way that aligns with his values.

“You sort of set the ground rules for how you’re going to treat people, how you’re going to treat your staff, what you want it to feel like to employees when they come in,” he said. “We spend a lot of time thinking through and talking about those sorts of things and making sure that we’re staying true to them.”

In 2021, the couple purchased a warehouse in West Des Moines, allowing them to continue packaging products by hand and making plans for the future.

“We knew we were going to expand,” he said. “When we took on the warehouse, we knew we needed to get a space that would support additional locations.”

Upgrades in the store’s technology last year also added to the plans to expand, making it easier to track where online orders came from. The Iowa City region became a top candidate after seeing a large number of orders coming in from the area.

Commercial Property Manager at Watts Group Deanna Printy visited AllSpice in Des Moines last holiday season with Director of Leasing for Iowa River Landing Deanna Trumbull. The two then proposed the idea of opening a second location at the Iowa River Landing, although official plans didn’t begin until February.

“AllSpice has such a good following and we felt it would fit perfectly into our diverse retail mix,” Printy wrote in an email to The Daily Iowan.

She said the unique mix of stores, restaurants, and hotels is what attracts guests, and the Iowa River Landing management team is excited to have AllSpice join the community.

What comes next?

While the opening of the Coralville location is currently the primary project, Haning-Brown said additional stores can be expected in the future.

“I don’t think we ever want to be Target, where we’ve got stores all over the country, but we have a handful of priority locations just based on what people have asked about and where we can see that we’d do a fair amount of business,” he said.

Gameday fun for the whole family

Colony Acres in North Liberty is hosting a community watch party on Saturday. The farm will open at 1:30 p.m. for families of all ages. The free-of-charge event will offer zip line rides, a giant slide, a bouncy pad and duck races. There will also be free face painting while kids can stock up on free noisemakers and pom poms.

The Iowa Brass band will perform leading up to kick off, while the Ambition Baton and Dance group will offer a live twirling performance at halftime.

Several craft and domestic beers will be available for purchase, including offerings from Big Grove Brewery and Backpocket Brewing. Kettle corn, pumpkin bread, pizza, funnel cakes and donuts will also be available for purchase.

Iowa City DMV relocated to Coralville

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) relocated its Iowa City DMV to Coralville, a move it said was needed to accommodate a growing volume of customers.

The move came less than a week after IDOT made the announcement on its website July 21 to relocate from the Iowa City location, 1700 S 1st Ave suite 6, to 2303 Jones Blvd., Coralville.

“The new location, between Theisen’s and Costco, was chosen after an extensive search for a space that could better accommodate the volume of customers in this area. It will offer customers a larger, more spacious and modern facility to do business,” IDOT said in a statement July 21. “We will offer the same services, just at a new location.”

Darcy Doty, IDOT’s customer services bureau director, said the move was prompted by the lease ending at the eastdale Plaza location, the need for additional square footage, and the desire to move out of a mall location.

The idea to move locations began percolating during the COVID-19 pandemic, when access to buildings was limited. Iowa operates 18 DOT driver’s license service centers across the state, some of which function within malls. When the malls closed, the DMVs could not continue with services, unless the mall had a direct customer entrance.

“Service interruption is pretty significant,” Ms. Doty said.

The search begins

A request to move was proposed in March 2021, with the original intent to stay in the Iowa City area. The Department of Administrative Services, which led the search process and negotiated prices, found few possibilities–the prices in Iowa City were either too steep or the buildings did not meet the necessary requirements. The desired real estate needed to be ADA compliant with fiber optic connectivity, enough parking space for staff and customers, and at least 5,500 square feet. IDOT also wanted a building that had a clear view of the parking lot for security purposes.

IDOT also looked into constructing a new building, but the estimates were ultimately too high–which is when it began expanding its search to surrounding areas, landing on the current location in Coralville. Once the lease was negotiated, IDOT notified public transit, since reroute bussing takes time.

Transportation a concern

The Coralville location is currently not directly served by a fixed route public transit system, which has been a cause of concern for some residents, but Johnson county has offered alternative means of transportation.

“Eligible residents can use Same-Day On-Demand service operated by Johnson County SEATS to ride to and from the DMV office in Coralville. The cost is $5 (cash only) for each one-way trip,” declared a statement from Coralville’s website .

This new service, operated by Johnson County SEATS, offers same-day accessible rides anywhere in Johnson County to those without access to an alternative form of transportation. It operates Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m – 4:30 p.m., except holidays. The DMV is not responsible for public transportation, but “we are working the best we can to make sure we are accessible,” said Ms. Doty.

Short notice?

Transportation issues aside, some wondered why there was little notice between the announcement on IDOT’s website and the actual move.

Ms. Doty said there were a few reasons for the public short notice, one of them being that the DMV operates on an appointment basis and they were able to reach out to those customers ahead of time. Announcements were also posted on both the old and new site; and in the past, there was a tendency for customers to show up to new locations the day they were announced.

There has been good feedback from the public overall. “Folks who have come to the new facility have said that it’s wonderful,” said Ms. Doty.

Around a dozen boats under water after boat dock flips at Coralville Lake Marina

CORALVILLE LAKE, Iowa — Several boat owners are now frustrated ahead of summer, after severe weather flipped a boat dock and sent ten to 15 boats under water.

A strong Sunday storm that brought 65-75 miles per hour winds, up to golf ball sized hail, and at least one tornado, practically lifted and flipped the entire dock at the Coralville Lake Marina.

That dock was completely lifted from the lake and flipped upside down, along with the boats that were anchored to it.

No one was at the dock when it happened.

Owners and managers tell Iowa's News Now it could be a week before all the boats are lifted out of the lake, and there's no telling when clean up will be complete.

There was shock and surprise for several boat owners who got a call letting them know their boats were under water.

Tim Dickens has owned boats and docked them here for nearly 50 years.

He says the damage he saw Monday morning is even worse than the 2020 derecho.

"The previous owner of then marina gave me a call and said the nose was sticking out and that was the only thing. And so I drove out here and the owner of the marina was here trying to get some of them out," Dickens said.

High winds did the unimaginable, hitting the dock but sparing the other ones around it.

Ben Patience is the manager of the marina.

He says this was a testament of how unpredictable Mother Nature can be.

"We knew there was going to be bad weather, but we've experienced storms out here before and not had this kind of damage," Patience said. "We actually have more damage during this than we experienced during the derecho."

Just a few yards away, other docks were unscathed.

"That one will get the brunt of the energy because it's facing perpendicular to the mouth of the cove. And so that one is gonna take the brunt of the impact," Patience said.

The boats on this dock range from 3,000 to 8,000 pounds.

But not even that much weight could withstand those powerful gusts of wind over the lake.

"To have that much weight to flip over like a pancake, is just not something that anyone can prepare for," Patience said.

The dock will most likely remain shut down for the entire season while repairs get done.

An insurance adjuster is expected to come out to survey the damage this week, but it could take several days to get through all of the boats.

For those who count the days leading up to summer and cruising the lake, a longer wait is now in store. But the dream is not gone forever, especially for boat lovers like Tim Dickens, who says he is going to wait a year and probably buy another boat.
