DIKE, Iowa (KWWL) -- Dike-New Hartford hosted Osage in a matchup of two 1-1 teams that could easily be undefeated.

Osage dropped its season opener against Class A 5th-ranked St. Ansgar, 25-24, before bouncing back for a 45-0 win against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura.

Dike-New Hartford fell to top-ranked Grundy Center in week one, 7-6. They bounced back for a hard fought win, 9-7, at West Branch last Friday.

First possession, the Wolverines are moving when Colin Meester connects with Micah Walston, keeping the drive going and giving the students something to get excited about.

However, the Green Devils defense stepped up. Ledger Nehls got into the backfield and dropped Meester, halting the Wolverines drive and forcing a punt.

What an interesting punt it was. The Wolverines made a tackle near the end zone, hoping for a safety. They didn't get that, but they did force another punt soon after.

Carson Costello showed off the moves for Dike-New Hartford, returning it all the way down to the 35 yard line.

Facing 4th down, the Wolverines decide to go for it, and Costello steps up again, moving the chains and keeping the drive alive.

Again facing 4th down, this time the Wolverines came up short. It was Tucker Stangel making the stop, forcing the turnover on downs.

Osage would start to get the ball moving. Max Knudsen dropped back and found Quinn Street for a nice gain, getting close to midfield.

But this drive would stall, and the Wolverines would get moving. Noah Borcherding punches it in, finally getting the Wolverines on the board, taking a 7-0 lead late in the 2nd quarter.

Dike-New Hartford kept the ground game going. This time it was Micah Walston running past defenders and punching it into the end zone to take a 14-0 lead shortly before halftime.

Osage would try to get things going before the break, but it was Carson Costello jumping the route and picking off the pass, sending the Wolverines to half with a 14-0 lead.

However, this lead would not hold for Dike-New Hartford. The Green Devils came back in the second half and snuck out of Dike with a 15-14 victory, moving to 2-1 on the season.

Both teams will be on the road next week. Dike-New Hartford will be at Sumner-Fredericksburg, while Osage will hit the road to take on New Hampton.

Local couple commit $750,000 to UNI-Dome renovation

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Kevin Hemmen remembers the early days of the state-of-the-art domed facility that would eventually become synonymous with the University of Northern Iowa.Hemmen, who would graduate from UNI's accounting program in 1979, saw the Harlem Globetrotters and the rock band Chicago perform at the brand new UNI-Dome. Even then it was clear just how unique it was to have a facility like the UNI-Dome in the Cedar Valley.Nearly 50 years later, Kevin and his wife Deb – both longtime Dike, Iowa resident...

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Kevin Hemmen remembers the early days of the state-of-the-art domed facility that would eventually become synonymous with the University of Northern Iowa.

Hemmen, who would graduate from UNI's accounting program in 1979, saw the Harlem Globetrotters and the rock band Chicago perform at the brand new UNI-Dome. Even then it was clear just how unique it was to have a facility like the UNI-Dome in the Cedar Valley.

Nearly 50 years later, Kevin and his wife Deb – both longtime Dike, Iowa residents – have pledged $750,000 to ensure the UNI-Dome remains a vibrant facility for the community for the next 50 years. Their gift is a part of the university's Our Tomorrow capital campaign.

"Our Tomorrow is about preserving the past, planning for the future and making what's already great even better," Kevin said. "Legacy, giving back, is something our family has felt very strongly about, and we want our legacy to be about improving the community, not only for our grandchildren but for the future of the greater Cedar Valley and of course for UNI where it all began for us."

"We are very grateful to Kevin and Deb for their continued generosity in support of Panther athletics," said UNI Athletics Director David Harris. "Their gift to the UNI-Dome renovation project helps us ensure the future of this iconic facility for the university and the community for years to come. We greatly appreciate their belief in the vision for the Dome and the willingness to make a significant contribution to this important project. They clearly share our goal of creating an experience for our fans, supporters and visitors that will serve this community for another half century," Harris said.

Kevin Hemmen spent more than three decades working for, and becoming president of Waterloo Warehousing & Service, Inc., a logistics company serving a broad range of industries both domestically and internationally. He counts his experiences in the Dome, such as UNI Basketball's stunning defeat of the University of Iowa before a record 22,000-plus fans, among his fondest UNI memories.

"It's exciting to see the renovation plans and to know that the UNI administration is looking towards the future, to not only preserve the facility, but to make major improvements for generations ahead," Kevin commented. "With a collective effort by the UNI community to support this campaign, we believe there could be expanded opportunities for events in the Dome, along with keeping UNI competitive with universities around the country in terms of recruitment."

In recognition of Kevin and Deb's gift, a premier space in the UNI-Dome will be named in the Hemmen family's honor.

The Hemmens' investment supports a three-phased $50 million renovation of the UNI-Dome. Included in the first phase of renovations is replacing the UNI-Dome's nearly 25-year-old fabric roof, reconstructing the west entrance and concourse, creating new and increased restrooms, and providing new and expanded suites.

Phase two of the project will include bowl upgrades and structural improvements along with resurfacing the indoor track. Among the bowl improvements included are new seating, wider aisles, handrails and greater ADA seating. The final phase of the project will include updates to the UNI-Dome sound system, marquee signage and visual identity.

Phase one is estimated at $20 million with over half of the goal already raised. Phase two is also estimated at $20 million while phase three is estimated at $10 million. The UNI-Dome renovation is a key initiative of the university's Our Tomorrow comprehensive campaign and will be funded primarily with private support. Multiple naming opportunities are available and can be accessed through the UNI-Dome renovation website, unidomerenovation.com.

Donations to the project are tax-deductible through the UNI Foundation and can be made as a multi-year pledge.

DIKE, Iowa (KCRG) - In her 20th season as the Dike-New Hartford volleyball head coach, Diane Harms has led 8 Wolverine volleyball teams to state titles. Over the weekend, she recorded her 1,000th career victory at DNH’s home tournament.

“It’s a lot of time in the gym. It’s a lot of people that I’ve had the opportunity to coach and coach with, be mentored by,” Harms said. “When you think about it, it’s pretty overwhelming.”

Watching her reach that milestone was special for her players.

“That’s awesome for coach to get that. It’s not normal either. Having her as a coach since fourth grade, has been awesome. Then, when I was in the stands when I was younger, seeing all the people she’s coached and impacted their lives is just awesome,” Jadyn Petersen said.

“Seeing all the hard work she has put in over the years and to be a part of something so special, to have her have that goal and that commitment, is just truly good to be a part of,” Payton Petersen said.

Harms is just the second coach to lead the Wolverines program. Although she’s quick to credit those around her for her success, many of her players have gone on to play in college and even coach.

“We have had a lot of players go onto that next level. It’s so great when they go on and they get to try to achieve their goals and dreams at the next level and compete there,” said Harms. “Some of them have gotten back into coaching. Two of my assistant coaches right now are previous players who went on and now, they’re coming back and they want to get into coaching. So that’s really special,” she added.

Two of the latest college commitments from the Wolverines are juniors Jadyn and Payton Petersen. Jadyn will follow in the footsteps of her sister Baylee and play for her mom Bobbi at the University of Northern Iowa.

“They’re like a gritty program. I know the ins and outs of it kind of, but not from an inside perspective, just watching from the outside That’s just where I wanted to be,” Jadyn said.

Her sister Payton’s path is similar to their sister Sydney who played at Texas, before joining the Panthers as a graduate transfer. Earlier this week Payton, committed to the University of Louisville, who ranks second in the country.

“They’re definitely on a very high track right now, which is very exciting. The coaching staff there is awesome, the culture is so amazing. I think it’s some what like DNH, so with the opportunity like that, I couldn’t turn it down,” Payton said.

It will be different for the younger set of Petersen twins to play on different teams.

“We do everything together currently. For her to go spread her wings and for me to go spread mine, is going to be something exciting,” Payton added.

They still have time together left on the court as DNH who sits 23-1 overall, looks to three-peat as Class 2A state champions.

The Iowa high school volleyball state tournament will be held Monday through Thursday in Coralville. Game-winning plays will be made, teams will hoist trophies and honor will be bestowed upon towns across the state.

But who are the ones making those plays?

Below is a list of 10 of the best recruits in the state tournament. They will be a part of state title runs before going on to play at the next level.

Bliss Beck, Clear Creek Amana

Senior. The Drake commit is one of the most fearsome middle hitters of the state, averaging 3.8 kills and 1.1 blocks per set. She leads a Clippers team that is 45-0 and has lost only four sets this season.

Bailey Boeve, Hinton

Sophomore. Boeve is the definition of a do-it-all player. Leading the team with 4.3 kills per set, she's also the state's leader in blocks with 2.4 per set. Behind her, the Blackhawks have lost only one match the entire season.

Mackenzie Dean, Dowling Catholic

Senior. The Kansas Jayhawks have a star heading to Lawrence after her high school career ends. The outside hitter is averaging 4.3 kills and 1.5 digs per set and has the Maroons as the early favorite heading into the 5A tournament.

Isabelle Elliot, Sumner-Fredericksburg

Senior. She'll be heading to Northern Iowa after high school, but for now Elliot leads a dark-horse contender in the 2A class. The future Panther is averaging 5.2 kills and 2.3 digs per set for a team looking to give Dike-New Hartford its first loss.

Abbey Hayes, North Scott

Junior. The future Creighton Bluejay leads a tough Lancer squad, averaging 3.4 kills and 2.4 digs per set. North Scott is seeded No. 4 in 4A.

Chloe Meester, Mount Vernon

Junior. The first of two Louisville commits on this list, Meester is one of the state's leaders in kills per set with 5.2. She's a great defender as well in posting 3.2 digs per set. The Mustangs are a favorite in 3A because of her play from the outside hitter position.

Delaney Miller, Ankeny Centennial

Junior. Miller is one of the lone non-committed players on this list. She headlines an outstanding Ankeny Centennial team. At 4.2 kills and 2.3 digs per set, she ranks No. 4 in the state of Iowa's 2025 class on Prepdig and will be a prize for any college that lands her.

Jadyn Petersen, Dike-New Hartford

Senior. Headed to Northern Iowa to play for her mom, Bobbi Petersen. Jadyn is a leader for arguably the best team in the state. Alongside her twin sister Payton, Jadyn is averaging 3.7 kills and 2.9 digs per set for the Wolverines and their undefeated season.

Payton Petersen, Dike-New Hartford

Senior. Heading to Louisville after this season, Payton is a big reason the Wolverines have lost just one set all year. She is averaging 5.5 kills per set, good for fourth in the state. Her three digs per set also leads the team.

Katie Quick, Ankeny Christian

Junior. Quick won't be heading far when she is done at Ankeny Christian, pledging to play at Drake. She's one of the best setters in Iowa, averaging 8.3 assists, 2.4 digs and a 1.6 aces per set. She does it all for the Eagles as they look for their second state title with Quick on the roster.

But, Dyersville Beckman’s bats were hotter.

The fourth-seeded Blazers scorched No. 5 Dike-New Hartford for 13 hits, claiming a 7-4 victory in the Class 2A state baseball quarterfinals Tuesday at Merchants Park. Beckman won its first state game since winning the 2017 2A title.

Every Blazer starter reached base. Matthew Florence led the way with three, while Luke Schieltz, Luke Sigwarth, Owen Huehnergarth and Lane Kramer had two apiece.

Beckman got on the board early, capitalizing on a Wolverine miscue. Nate Offerman hustled down the line on a grounder to third and reached when the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag.

The Blazers (25-13) were rewarded for the effort. Sigwarth followed with a double and Offerman scored on Nick Schmidt’s sacrifice fly.

Dike-New Hartford answered the next inning. Colin Meester led off with a single and advanced on a Micah Walston single. Cale McCumber’s RBI groundout tied the game, 1-1.

Beckman didn’t waste time to regain the lead, scoring two in its half of the second.

Kramer provided an instant boost with a leadoff double. Florence followed with a base hit and Kramer scored when Eli Kluesner reached on a fielder’s choice. Kluesner scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 edge.

The Wolverines (26-4) clawed back in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs against Schmidt, who started the game. Offerman came in to relieve Schmdit and was greeted by Gus Varney’s RBI single to right, chasing home McCumber and Devon Kollasch and knotting the game at four apiece.

Kollasch also singled and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.

The Blazers smacked nine hits through the first four innings, including three straight in the two-run fourth.

Schieltz was plunked. Offerman and Sigwarth followed with line-drive singles. Sigwarth’s hit to right drove in Schieltz. Huehnergarth added a flare base hit just beyond the shortstop’s glove to load the bases. Schmidt beat out a double-play attempt to extend the inning and score Offerman. Beckman led 5-3 after four.

The Blazers extended their lead with a two-run fifth. Eli Kluesner doubled and scored on an Offerman fielder’s choice. Huehnergarth’s RBI single drove in Kluesner, who walked.

Sigwarth earned his fifth save in relief.

Beckman advances to Thursday’s semifinals to face the winner between top-seeded and defending state champion Van Meter and Carroll Kuemper.
