The Lions amassed 444 offensive yards, including 277 rushing from Baylor Speidel in a 34-28 victory over Class A No. 10 Columbus Community Friday night at Columbus Junction. Speidel punched in a 4-yard touchdown with 1:40 left for the go-ahead score and his fourth of the game.

“Our boys played tremendous (Friday) night,” Lisbon first-year head coach Dylan Hastings said. “It was a total team effort.”

Lisbon improved to 3-0 for the fifth time since 2007. The Lions are just two victories shy of last year’s total, notching their first win over a ranked foe.

“Hopefully, we opened some eyes,” said Speidel, who was a second-team all-district running back in 2022. “We have to keep it going.”

The Lions built a 27-14 halftime lead, posting three TDs in the second quarter. Hastings said the offense began to click and the line started to wear down the Wildcats defense.

“Our offense is explosive,” Hastings said. “They’re fun to watch. They are fun kids to coach. Kudos to the work they’ve done in the offseason in our strength and speed program and to our coaches getting on board to help get these kids faster.”

Columbus battled back to take a 28-27 lead with about four minutes remaining in the fourth. Lisbon marched down the field and answered with the last of Speidel’s scores a little sooner than Hastings would have liked. Columbus used a big pass play to get to Lisbon’s 20 in the late seconds but Tiernan Boots’ pick thwarted the threat.

“They threw it up for one last play,” Hastings said. “We had some pressure in the backfield and got an interception to seal the deal.”

Speidel had career bests in rushing yards and touchdowns. He averaged 12.6 yards per carry, giving him an 11.2 average for the season. Speidel has 413 yards and nine TDs this season. He was quick to praise his blockers. Quarterback Dakota Clark also rushed for a TD.

“The run game starts with the line and we had an unbelievable game up front,” Speidel said. “They dominated. I was able to find holes and use my speed to get through.”

Speidel is already within 44 yards of last season’s total, giving him 1,029 career rushing yards and 20 TDs.

“He has come a very long way, offensively,” Hastings said. “The speed has been there but some of his agility, shiftiness and vision has come a really long way. He works really hard as well as the rest of the boys. They’re all working hard every single day.

“I’m proud of them and their effort in these first three weeks.”

Regina rolls past Mediapolis

Iowa City Regina continued its impressive start with a 45-7 victory at Mediapolis Friday night. The Regals are 3-0 and have outscored their opponents by a total of 140-32.

The Regals scorched the Bulldogs through the air. Gentry Dumont passed for 399 yards, completing 20 of 27 attempts, with three TDs. Dumont connected with five receivers, hitting Jackson Naeve six times for 162 yards including a 53-yard score. Ty Joss also had six receptions for 114 yards and a score.

Naeve and Dumont added TD runs as well. Dumont leads Class 1A with 858 passing yards, while Naeve leads 11-player receivers with six TD catches.

Regina hosts Durant for Homecoming next Friday.

Waukon gets first win

After a rough first two weeks, Waukon got into the win column with a 28-19 home victory and handed Independence its first loss of the year.

Graine Curtin and Jaxon Brinkman combined for 196 rushing yards and three TDs. Brinkman threw a TD pass to Kole McCormick, who finished with 80 yards on five catches to lead the Indians (1-2).

• East Buchanan’s Tanner Thurn rushed for 196 yards and four TDs in a 39-21 win over No. 9 Maquoketa Valley. The fourth-ranked Buccaneers rushed for 359 total yards and the defense added 11 tackles for loss.

• Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Vicenzo Gianforte passed for 271 yards and three TDs, adding a TD rush to helping the Cougars to a 34-0 win over No. 4 Linn-Mar. It was Kennedy’s first win of the season.

A.I. art may be sparking all manner of outrage for its incursion into a human-dominated domain, but not at the Non-Fungible Conference in Lisbon. Earlier in June, the Web3-focused symposium leaned into the buzzy medium, playing host to the world’s first-ever A.I. art hackathon, organized by NFT platform MakersPlace.

And just what is an A.I. art hackathon? Quite simply, it was an event that saw digital artists generating work—live and on-the-spot—based on creative prompts.

Over two days, BLΛC, DVK the artist, DigitalCoy, and Illustrata created art inspired by author Sasha Stiles’s poem, “Ars Autopoetica.” It was a process made more unexpected by fellow digital artists Trevor Jones and Hackatao who introduced spontaneous “mystery artifacts” throughout (one of which was Jones’s famed Bitcoin Angel).

The fruits of these labors were released on MakersPlace as open and limited edition NFTs on June 7; a further drop of 1/1s launches on June 15.

In effect, the hackathon was an occasion for creative collaborations, said Kayvan Ghaffari, head of legal at MakersPlace.

“The artists were collaborating, not in competition with one another, but in aiding one another,” he told Artnet News. “At the table, they were looking at each other’s screens, they were asking each other for recommendations or advice.”

As an event that heralds the launch of MakersPlace’s “A.I. Generative Art” marketplace category, the hackathon was of course as much a plug for the emerging genre as it was a bid to demystify it and expand its bounds. That entailed making transparent in real time the myriad creative processes that go into producing an A.I. work.

Case in point: the works created by the above four artists went far beyond the digital medium. They were swiftly printed by robotics company Artmatr, with the resulting canvases chopped and collaged by digital artist Coldie into a single physical artwork. That piece, signed by all the participating creators, will be raffled off to holders of all eight limited-edition NFTs, created by the four artists alongside Jones and Hackatao, on June 23.

The collaboration happening at the hackathon, then, occurs not just among artists, but also between humans and machines—an exercise that Ghaffari sees as injecting a “soul” into computer-generated works.

“We have four humans using technology to create art. What if we also had another technology to create a more human form of art?” he explained. “A lot of people will say a painting is art, because they assume that it’s created by a human. Well, what if it wasn’t?”

Lisbon made its third straight state baseball tournament appearance and finally earned that elusive victory.

Hunter Clark provided a gem on the mound, Luke Czarnecki drove in three runs and the No. 9 Lions advanced with a decisive 5-0 victory over No. 8 Burlington Notre Dame in a Class 1A quarterfinal game Monday at Merchants Park.

“About time,” Clark said about the Lions’ first state win in the last three trips. “It was a really good team win. We put the bat on the ball a lot today. We had guys at the bottom of the order come through huge. We scored runs when we needed to and made plays behind me. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”

The Lions (26-4) will face top-seed and No. 2-ranked Kingsley-Pierson (28-2) in Wednesday’s semifinal at 7 p.m.

This is a much better experience than the last two disappointments.

“It feels great to stay here,” said senior Landon Stolte, who had two hits and two runs. “We get to play another game in Carroll. It is awesome.”

Clark, who has started each of the state quarterfinals, was determined to escort the Lions deeper into the tournament this time. He recorded two postseason wins to get here and was superb against the Nikes. He allowed three hits and only four total baserunners in a complete-game shutout. He had three strikes but walked just one.

“I approach every team the same,” Clark said. “You have to throw strikes. You have to get outs. If they hit it, I have a good defense behind me to make plays. I trust them.”

Clark retired the final nine batters. He still wasn’t hanging his hat on this win and finally getting to the semifinals. Clark was direct about how to handle this performance.

“It’s a good start,” Clark said. “A win is a win. We’re going to move past this one and then go into the semifinals ready to roll with Cohen (Kamaus) on the mound. We’re going to play good (defense) and hit the ball. Hopefully, get another win.”

Lisbon looked relaxed, confident and enthusiastic behind their ace. The Lions made highlight-reel plays on defense, like a sliding grab on a groundout by Alex Bock and a double play from third baseman Stolte to end a Nikes threat in the bottom of the first. They delivered clutch two-out hits, receiving an RBI single from Kaden Caspers in the three-run third.

Tesensky said it stemmed from Cohen Kamaus leading off the game with a double to left and scoring on a wild pitch for a 1-0 advantage and Clark peppering the strike zone. The Lions thrive in that scenario.

“When we can put up runs early and trust our defense, that is when we can play loose and relaxed,” Stolte said. “That’s when we play our best.”

Czarnecki was clutch for the Lions. He increased his RBI total to 29 this season, rapping a two-run triple down the right-field line and off the glove of a diving right fielder. Stolte and courtesy runner Wes Sadler came home, helping the Lions pad their lead. Czarnecki’s base hit in the fifth drove in Stolte again.

“Finally decided to turn it on after the length of the playoffs,” Czarnecki said with a laugh. “I wasn’t sure if it was going to stay in or if he was going to catch it. I was hoping Landon would go because I was looking three the whole way.”

The Panthers await. They handled South Winneshiek, 6-1, to return to the semifinals for the second straight season.

“We have to look at it like just another opportunity,” Stolte said. “If we think about it like it’s bigger than it really is then we’re going to psych ourselves out. You have to keep a level head and play like you have been. It’s another opportunity to win.”

One more wrestler could join the list at this week's 2023 Iowa high school boys state wrestling championships, set for Feb. 15-18 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Ben Kueter, a senior from Iowa City High, is in position to potentially win his fourth straight individual state wrestling title. He is competing this week at 220 pounds in Class 3A. He's previously won titles at 160 in 2020, 195 in 2021, and 220 last year.

Here are the 31 four-timers:

Bob Steenlage, Britt

Years: 1959-62

Iowa's first four-timer came 36 years after the Iowa High School Athletic Association took control of the state wrestling tournament. He won at 95, 103, 112 and 120 pounds.

Jeff Kerber, Emmetsburg

Years: 1976-79

Kerber became the second four-timer 17 years after Steenlage, winning at 98, 112, 119 and 126 pounds. Kerber was the first four-timer to go undefeated for his career, posting a 126-0 record.

Scott Morningstar, Lisbon

Years: 1977-80

A wave of wrestlers followed Kerber as four-time champs. Morningstar won his fourth state title the year after Kerber won his fourth. Morningstar's son, Ryan, would go on to win three state titles.

Joe Gibbons, Waterloo Columbus/Ames

Years: 1978-81

Gibbons became the fourth four-timer, but the first to win his four titles across two different schools. He won his first two at Waterloo Columbus, in 1978-79, then won his last two at Ames, in 1980-81. The Gibbons family has combined to win 10 total state titles — Joe won four, Jim won three, Jeff won two and Tim won one.

Greg Randall, Mount Vernon

Years: 1979-82

For the fourth straight season, another wrestler wins a fourth state title. This time, it's Randall, who won at 98, 112, 126 and 132 pounds.

Mark Schwab, Osage

Years: 1982-85

Schwab became Iowa's sixth four-timer in 1985, winning twice at 98 pounds, then again at 105 and his fourth at 112. He won his first title the year Randall won his fourth.

Dan Knight, Clinton

Years: 1984-87

Knight is Iowa's seventh four-timer, and the fifth to win his fourth title in the 1980s. Knight, who now coaches at Bettendorf, won at 98, 112 and twice at 126 pounds, compiling a perfect 128-0 record along the way. The Knight family — Dan, Jeff, Steve, along with Evan and Colby, Steve's kids — also combined to win 10 state titles. Dan's son, Jake, is a freshman at Bettendorf and will wrestle at 113 pounds in Class 3A this week.

Shane Light, Lisbon

Years: 1987-90

Light became Iowa's eighth four-timer, and the first of four four-timers in the 1990s. He was also the second four-timer from Lisbon. Only four schools have produced multiple four-time champions: Lisbon, Ogden, Don Bosco and Centerville.

Jeff McGinness, Iowa City High

Years: 1990-93

McGinness became the ninth four-time state champion, posting a 172-0 career record along the way. The IHSAA expanded to three wrestling classes ahead of the 1968-69 season, and Knight and McGinness became the first two wrestlers to win all four state titles in Iowa's largest of the three classes.

Jason Keenan, Ogden

Years: 1992-95

Keenan became No. 10, winning his titles at 103, 112, 119 and 125 pounds. He was also the first of two from Ogden.

Eric Juergens, Maquoketa

Years: 1993-96

Juergens went 144-0 on his way to becoming Iowa's 11th four-time state champ. He also won his four titles at 103, 112, 119 and 125 pounds.

Jesse Sundell, Ogden

Years: 1998-01

Sundell followed Keenan as Ogden's second four-timer, and Iowa's first to win his fourth state title in the 21st century. Sundell is now Ogden's wrestling coach.

Mack Reiter, Don Bosco

Years: 2000-03

The 2002-03 season — already two decades ago! — was a special one for Iowa high school wrestling, as both Mack Reiter and C.J. Ettelson became the first two four-timers to win their fourth titles in the same season. Reiter won all of his in Class 1A to become the Dons' first four-timer.

C.J. Ettelson, Hudson

Years: 2000-03

Ettelson won his first three titles in Class 2A, then Hudson dropped to 1A for his final championship run. Hudson had three individual state wrestling titles before Ettelson came along and won four.

Dan LeClere, North Linn

Years: 2002-05

Two years after Reiter and Ettelson won four at the same time, LeClere and Jay Borschel did the same between 2002-05. LeClere won all of his in Class 1A.

Jay Borschel, Linn-Mar

Years: 2002-05

Borschel won all four in Class 3A, winning at 103, 125, 152 and 171 pounds. Both his and LeClere's senior seasons were chronicled in the book "Four Days To Glory," written by Mark Kreidler.

T.J. Sebolt, Centerville

Years: 2003-06

Sebolt became Iowa's 17th four-timer, and the first to win his fourth title at Wells Fargo Arena, after the IHSAA previously held the event at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. He was also the first Iowa high school wrestler to record 200 career victories.

Bart Reiter, Don Bosco

Years: 2006-09

Bart Reiter joined brother Mack as a four-time state champion, becoming the first set of brothers to become four-time state champs. They would not be the last, either.

Nick Moore, Iowa City West

Years: 2007-10

Moore went 183-1 on his way to winning four state titles for the late Mark Reiland at West. Moore won his titles at 130, 140, 152 and 160 pounds.

Cory Clark, Southeast Polk

Years: 2009-12

Clark became the 20th four-timer in Iowa history, winning his titles at 103, 112, 119 and 126 pounds on his way to a 185-1 career record. He went on to become a four-time All-American at Iowa, which included three NCAA finals appearances and one national title.

John Meeks, Des Moines Roosevelt

Years: 2009-12

Meeks became Iowa's 21st four-timer with a 168-0 career record, winning the same year as Clark. Meeks is responsible for four of Roosevelt's 12 all-time individual state wrestling titles. He was also the last one to win four while completing an undefeated career.

Jake Marlin, Creston

Years: 2010-13

In back-to-back seasons, there were multiple four-time state champs. In 2013, it was Marlin and Brandon Sorensen. Both of them won all four of their titles in Class 2A, too.

Brandon Sorensen, Denver-Tripoli

Years: 2010-13

Sorensen won his four state titles at 119, 130, 132 and 145 pounds, then went on to become a four-time All-American for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Max Thomsen, Union

Years: 2012-15

Thomsen compiled a 210-1 career record while winning four Class 2A state titles. He also won 199 consecutive matches, which is tied for the longest winning streak in state history.

Carter Happel, Lisbon

Years: 2013-16

Happel became Iowa's 25th four-time state champion, and also Lisbon's third, joining Morningstar and Light. He went 209-1 overall, which included 172 wins in a row.

Brody Teske, Fort Dodge

Years: 2015-18

Teske went 177-1 and became Fort Dodge's first four-time state champion. His only loss came to Underwood's Alex Thomsen, another four-time state champion who also finished his career with a single loss, to Teske.

Alex Thomsen, Underwood

Years: 2015-18

Thomsen went 190-1 and became Underwood's first four-time state champion. His only loss came to Fort Dodge's Brody Teske, another four-time state champion who also finished his career with a single loss, to Thomsen.

Cael Happel, Lisbon

Years: 2017-20

Happel joined older brother Carter as a four-time state champion. He was Iowa's 28th four-timer, Lisbon's fourth four-timer, and gave the Happel family 11 total state titles — four each for Carter and Cael, and three from father Dean, from 1982-84.

Matthew Lewis, Centerville

Years: 2018-21

Lewis joined Sebolt as another four-timer for Centerville, winning at 106, 113, 126 and 145 pounds.

Marcel Lopez, New London

Years: 2019-22

Lopez became New London's first-ever four-time state champ, winning at 106, 113, 120 and 126 pounds in Class 1A. New London has 11 all-time individual state wrestling titles, and Lopez is responsible for four of them.

Carter Fousek, Crestwood

Years: 2019-22

Fousek joined Lopez as a four-time state champ, winning his four titles in Class 2A at 106, 113, 126 and 138 pounds. Fousek became the first four-timer in the history of the storied Crestwood/Cresco wrestling program.

Wrestling: Lisbon coach Brad Smith sets Iowa's all-time record for career dual-meet victories

Brad Smith is in a league all his own.The longtime Lisbon wrestling coach has spent the last 41 years authoring one of the finest chapters in Iowa's long-and-storied wrestling history. Brad Smith is in a league all his own.

The longtime Lisbon wrestling coach has spent the last 41 years authoring one of the finest chapters in Iowa's long-and-storied wrestling history. On Thursday night, he added another line to perhaps the best coaching career the state has ever seen.

Lisbon beat both Maquoketa Valley and East Buchanan by scores of 81-0 and 75-0, respectively. In doing so, Smith upped his career dual-meet win total to 647, a new all-time record in Iowa high-school wrestling history.

"It means a lot," Smith said. "I've been blessed with a lot of great wrestlers and a lot of great coaches. I've always surrounded myself with great people. That's why we've had a lot of success."

Smith surpasses Kent Kersten, the longtime Logan-Magnolia coach who retired in 2017 with 645 dual-meet wins. No other coach had even hit 600 until Smith did last season. Only two others, Don Bosco's Dan Mashek and Williamsburg's Grant Eckenrod, have reached 500.

But the career dual-meet win mark is just another line in Smith's lengthy Hall-of-Fame résumé.

He's only ever coached at two schools: Lisbon from 1979-1991, Iowa City High from 1992-2011, then back to Lisbon in 2013. In 41 years, Smith has led his teams to 12 traditional state team championships — nine at Lisbon, three at City — the most all-time by a single coach in Iowa history. He's also coached five teams to state runner-up finishes.

Even more, Smith has coached his teams to six state duals championships, in 1987-88, 1991, 1999, 2002 and 2017. He's also led four other teams to the state duals finals, in 1989-90, 2001 and 2016.

"It’s a testament to who he is," said Dean Happel, who wrestled under Smith and now coaches alongside him. "He’s been doing this a long time and still has a huge passion for wrestling, a huge passion to help kids get better in wrestling."

Smith's also had a knack for coaching individuals to new heights, too, including some of the best the state has ever seen.

He's coached 33 different wrestlers to individual state titles: 24 (and counting) at Lisbon, nine at City High. Thirteen of them have won more than one. He also coached two wrestlers to 200-plus career wins — Carter Happel (209) and Conner Shulista (201) — and countless others who have gone on to wrestle collegiately.

Of Iowa's 27 four-time state champs, Smith has had a hand in coaching four of them. He coached the entirety of Carter Happel's run, from 2013-16, and all four for Shane Light, from 1987-90. He coached Scott Morningstar to his final two, in 1979-80 and Jeff McGinness to his final two, in 1992-93 — which capped a perfect 172-0 career record.

He may have a fifth this coming February, too. Cael Happel, Dean's second son and Carter's younger brother, is in line to win his fourth state championship. He may also pass Carter's win total along the way — after Thursday, he's up to 196 career victories.

"I think it’s just a lifetime of hard work that has paid off for him," Cael Happel said. "It’s been great to be coached by him and seeing him win tonight was something special for him, the programs he’s coached and the Lisbon community."

Cael Happel won his second state title championship by technical fall, which helped Lisbon secure the team title in 2018, giving Smith No. 12. This year's Lion team is stacked once again, ranked No. 41 nationally by Intermat and No. 2 in Iowa's Class 1A by the Predicament.

In the Predicament's latest rankings, Lisbon has nine wrestlers ranked at their respective weights, including seven in the top-five and four ranked No. 1: Happel (138), Robert Avila Jr. (132), Marshall Hauck (152) and Cole Clark (195). Come Thursday, the Lions will wrestle top-ranked Don Bosco — who they've already beat once this season in a 34-32 thriller at the Battle of Waterloo.

A 13th traditional team title and a seventh state duals crown could come next month, as more icing on the proverbial cake. He's already been inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling, Hall of Fame, the Illinois Wrestling Hall of Fame, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Iowa High School Athletic Association's Wrestling Hall of Fame.

And to think, this all started with a simple phone call.

The legendary Al Baxter led Lisbon to five state titles in six years in the 1970s. He left after 1978 for a fruitful 26-year career as the coach at Buena Vista. But he first needed to find his replacement.

So he called J Robinson, then an assistant coach at Iowa, and asked if anyone might be interested. Smith, a national champ for the Hawkeyes in 1976, just happened to be sitting in Robinson's office.

"I never would've thought it'd become all this," Smith said.

It did not take long for Smith to follow Baxter's lead. Lisbon won six more traditional titles in the 1980s, then another in 1990. He took City High to the top in 1992, 1999 and 2002, then returned to Lisbon and won back-to-back championships in 2017-18. He added state duals crowns in 1987-88, 1991, 1999, 2002 and 2017.

Smith has coached entire family trees and their cousins. He's won at both Veterans Memorial Auditorium and Wells Fargo Arena. He has made Lisbon, Iowa, a town of less than 3,000 people, known in wrestling circles around the country.

A lot has changed in four decades, but Smith's coaching prowess endures. And he doesn't plan on stopping any time soon.

"Terry Branstad once said that Lisbon is the wrestling capital of Iowa," Dean Happel said. "That means a lot. We take it very seriously, and people know we take it very seriously. When you think of wrestling, you think of Lisbon in Iowa.

"He might shed a tear tonight. He's been doing this a long time. He always says that he’ll go until the last Happel graduates, so he’s got at least another, what, seven or eight years to go? I told him I’ll be right there with him."
