The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is filled with many different study spaces where students are invited to learn. Whether it be a historic library, collaborative classroom or quaint coffee shop, you are sure to find somewhere you feel comfortable learning. I have ranked my top five places to head off to for when I have an upcoming exam and aim to have a productive study session.

An institution’s primary library is a central hub for college students surrounding the campus, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Main Library is no different. With its historic architecture and collection of over 24 million resources, everything you might need while learning is right at your fingertips. With the Orange Room reserved for collaboration and the upstairs sectioned off for silent studying, you get the best of both worlds at UIUC’s Main Library.

The Siebel Center for Design is a top-tier location filled with countless whiteboards, classrooms, and study booths. With its centralized location and a vast array of seating options, it is an excellent place to visit when in need of finishing up some work. Open every day from 7 am-midnight, there is almost always a chance to grind some work out at one of Champaign’s finest study spots.

ACES Library, also referred to as Funk Library, is the perfect place to go when you really need to remain focused. With four different floors and group study rooms, it is the go-to spot for when you really need to focus. Pro tip: Go at sunset and see Champaign-Urbana light up the sky as it glows a fiery orange and pink haze.

Located on the tip of the Urbana side of campus, Caffe Paradiso is a fan-favorite among students. Its gorgeous interior, filled with unique seating and teal walls, is a wonderful place to get some work done. In addition, there is also outside seating for those good weather days when all you want to do is soak up the sun. The ambiance is unmatched and the shop also provides some of the best coffee in town at some of the most affordable prices.

For starters, this recently remodeled building received a facelift in 2021 and now contains a Starbucks (with an order ahead option, might I add). It has an open floor plan with bright furniture that offers both group and individual seating options. On the third floor of the building, there are also two bright white nap pods where students are encouraged to decompress in between classes. Overall, it is a beautiful building equipped with all of the necessities like coffee, comfortable seating, and colorful decals to help you get through any assignment college might throw your way.

LMN Architects is pleased to unveil the design of the new Steven S. Wymer Hall at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The building designed in collaboration with Booth Hansen provides a new hub for learning on campus by building on the innovations that Gies College of Business has pioneered.

The Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) has pioneered novel ways of combining in-person instruction with remote delivery, creating a program that is unique in its impact and reach. The new Steven S. Wymer Hall advances this innovative approach and provides flexible instructional spaces tailored to support in-person, remote, and hybrid modes of teaching and learning. Hybrid classrooms are collocated with robust production spaces, establishing a new paradigm for Higher Education instruction.

Jeffrey R. Brown, Josef and Margot Lakonishok Professor in Business and Dean, Gies College of Business, comments: “The future of business education will include online, residential, and hybrid learning. This new facility is designed for the future and with that vision in mind. Even what we think of as ‘traditional’ classrooms will be able to support all types of learning, and that’s going to enable us to deliver a powerful education in exciting new ways.”

The Steven S. Wymer Hall provides space for Gies and the entire Urbana campus to advance its ambitious teaching mission while also providing space to support faculty and staff growth. The lower levels support a teaching and learning ecosystem comprising hybrid classrooms, an auditorium, and a battery of spaces for the business school’s team-based learning curriculum. Production studios capable of synchronous and asynchronous production extend the reach of the teaching and learning ecosystem. The upper levels provide offices and collaboration space for faculty and staff. Uniting these various and diverse programs help provide a welcoming collection of community spaces.

The Urbana campus has a consistent character defined by neo-Georgian buildings of brick and limestone. The project responds to this traditional aesthetic while also engaging with an immediate context of its contemporary and post-modern neighbors. Volumes of hand laid brick interlock with fields of quarried stone and zones of natural metal, reconstituting the traditional elements in a novel manner. The result is a forward-looking form that feels contextual on this historic campus and welcomes the broader UIUC population.

Mark Nicol, Principal, LMN Architects, comments: “Wymer Hall has been designed to accelerate the innovations in teaching and learning that Gies and Illinois have always pioneered. The project will provide a rich experience for the residential students and enhance the online experience for remote students. We are excited to break ground and look forward to experience how the building reinforces the architectural traditions at Illinois while also looking to the future.”

Construction broke ground on April 14, 2023, and the project is expected to be completed by December 2024. Seattle, April 17, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- LMN Architects is pleased to unveil the design of the new Steven S. Wymer Hall at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The building designed in collaboration with Booth Hansen provides a new hub for learning on campus by building on the innovations that Gies College of Business has pioneered.

The Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) has pioneered novel ways of combining in-person instruction with remote delivery, creating a program that is unique in its impact and reach. The new Steven S. Wymer Hall advances this innovative approach and provides flexible instructional spaces tailored to support in-person, remote, and hybrid modes of teaching and learning. Hybrid classrooms are collocated with robust production spaces, establishing a new paradigm for Higher Education instruction.

Jeffrey R. Brown, Josef and Margot Lakonishok Professor in Business and Dean, Gies College of Business, comments: “The future of business education will include online, residential, and hybrid learning. This new facility is designed for the future and with that vision in mind. Even what we think of as ‘traditional’ classrooms will be able to support all types of learning, and that’s going to enable us to deliver a powerful education in exciting new ways.”

The Steven S. Wymer Hall provides space for Gies and the entire Urbana campus to advance its ambitious teaching mission while also providing space to support faculty and staff growth. The lower levels support a teaching and learning ecosystem comprising hybrid classrooms, an auditorium, and a battery of spaces for the business school’s team-based learning curriculum. Production studios capable of synchronous and asynchronous production extend the reach of the teaching and learning ecosystem. The upper levels provide offices and collaboration space for faculty and staff. Uniting these various and diverse programs help provide a welcoming collection of community spaces.

The Urbana campus has a consistent character defined by neo-Georgian buildings of brick and limestone. The project responds to this traditional aesthetic while also engaging with an immediate context of its contemporary and post-modern neighbors. Volumes of hand laid brick interlock with fields of quarried stone and zones of natural metal, reconstituting the traditional elements in a novel manner. The result is a forward-looking form that feels contextual on this historic campus and welcomes the broader UIUC population.

Construction broke ground on April 14, 2023, and the project is expected to be completed by December 2024. 'I want to get a dog': Iowa woman wins $1 million MegaMillions lottery prize

An Iowa woman who claimed a $1 million Mega Millions jackpot this month said she's long had a feeling she'd win big.

Karen Kramer, of Urbana, matched the first five numbers of Tuesday's $56 million drawing on a ticket she bought in Harpers Ferry while spending the weekend at her cabin along the Mississippi River, according to an Iowa Lottery news release.

She missed the Mega Ball number, but the ticket was still worth $1 million.

"I've always told my husband that I'm going to win the lottery," Kramer said in the news release. "I said, 'I have the right numbers, they just don't pick my numbers.'"

A ticket purchased in Illinois matched Tuesday's winning numbers (9-22-39-41-54) and the Mega Ball (19), but the jackpot has not yet been claimed. Another $1 million ticket like Kramer's was sold in West Virginia.

Kramer, 60, told lottery officials she and her husband will use the winnings to pay off some bills and boost their retirement account. Also, "I want to get a dog," she said in the news release.

Kramer is the third Iowan to win at least $500,000 playing the lottery this year, according to the news release. Gene Dice Sr., of Sergeant Bluff, won a $500,000 Powerball prize in February, and Anton Garrett, of Waterloo, won $2 million playing Powerball in May.

Iowa has a history of big lottery winners. Five Powerball jackpots worth at least $100 million have been claimed by Iowans in the last 15 years, including:

November 2018: Lerynne West, of Redfield, claimed Iowa's largest lottery prize to date — $343.9 million. West's ticket, and one sold in New York, matched the winning numbers 8, 12, 13, 19 and 27, and Powerball 4.

June 2012: The Shipping 20, a group of co-workers in the shipping department at the Quaker Oats plant in Cedar Rapids, split a $241 million Powerball jackpot.

October 2012: Bondurant's Lohse family won a Powerball jackpot prize worth $202.1 million.

October 2006: Fort Dodge's Timothy Guderian won a Powerball jackpot prize worth $200.8 million.

January 2006: Des Moines' Hugh Hawkins won a Powerball jackpot prize worth $113.2 million.

U of I to lead two of seven new national artificial intelligence institutes

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture are announcing an investment of more than $140 million to establish seven artificial intelligence institutes in the U.S. Two of the seven will be led by teams at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture are announcing an investment of more than $140 million to establish seven artificial intelligence institutes in the U.S. Two of the seven will be led by teams at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. They will support the work of researchers at the U. of I. and their partners at other academic and research institutions. Each of the new institutes will receive about $20 million over five years.

The USDA-NIFA will fund the AI Institute for Future Agricultural Resilience, Management and Sustainability at the U. of I. Illinois computer science professor Vikram Adve will lead the AIFARMS Institute.

The NSF will fund the AI Institute for Molecular Discovery, Synthetic Strategy and Manufacturing, also known as the Molecule Maker Lab Institute. Huimin Zhao, a U. of I. professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and of chemistry, will lead this institute.

AIFARMS will advance AI research in computer vision, machine learning, soft-object manipulation and intuitive human-robot interaction to solve major agricultural challenges, the NSF reports. Such challenges include sustainable intensification with limited labor, efficiency and welfare in animal agriculture, the environmental resilience of crops and the preservation of soil health. The institute will feature “a novel autonomous farm of the future, new education and outreach pathways for diversifying the workforce in agriculture and technology, and a global clearinghouse to foster collaboration in AI-driven agricultural research,” Adve said.

The Molecule Maker Lab Institute will focus on the development of new AI-enabled tools to accelerate automated chemical synthesis “to advance the discovery and manufacture of novel materials and bioactive compounds,” the NSF reports. The institute also will train a new generation of scientists with combined expertise in AI, chemistry and bioengineering. The goal of the institute is to establish “an open ecosystem of disruptive thinking, education and community engagement powered by state-of-the-art molecular design, synthesis and spectroscopic characterization technologies – all interfaced with AI and a modern cyberinfrastructure,” Zhao said.

“The National Science Foundation and USDA-NIFA recognize the breadth and depth of Illinois expertise in artificial intelligence, agricultural systems and molecular innovation,” U. of I. Chancellor Robert Jones said. “It is no surprise to me that two of seven new national AI institutes will be led by our campus. I look forward to seeing the results of these new investments in improving agricultural outcomes and innovations in basic and applied research.”

Adve is a co-director of the U. of I. Center for Digital Agriculture with crop sciences bioinformatics professor Matthew Hudson. AIFARMS will be under the CDA umbrella. Zhao and Hudson are affiliates of the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, where Zhao leads the Biosystems Design theme. The Molecule Maker Lab Institute will be associated with two campus institutes: IGB and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology.
