Here's a look at what happened as storms rolled through the area on August 1, 2025.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Friday afternoon was a time to be Weather Impact Alert as storms rolled through the Charlotte area. WCNC Charlotte's Weather Impact Team forecast that slow-moving storms would come through between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m., with all signs pointing to the potential for heavy rain during the second half of the day.
Those storms brought the potential for damaging winds as well, along with power outages.
Around 4 p.m., five counties were placed under a severe thunderstorm warning: Mecklenburg, Catawba, Iredell, Lincoln, and Rowan. Closer to 5 p.m., the warnings extended to specifically include Uptown Charlotte, along with Cabarrus, Gaston, and York counties.
Closer to 5:15 p.m., the warnings extended to all of Mecklenburg County and parts of Union County.
The storms caused a ground stop at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport as well, lasting until at least 5:30 p.m. initially. It was extended until at least 6 p.m., then again to 7 p.m.

Several reports of trees brought down by the wind were shared by officials. Around 4:45 p.m., Duke Energy reported that about 1,000 customers were without power in the Troutman area.

Duke Energy reported that about 1,000 customers in Cabarrus County, near the Odell School area, were without power around 5 p.m.
Duke Energy saw about 1,000 outages in Gaston County as well. Outage areas were spread out, with customers near Spencer Mountain, Dallas, Bessemer City, Kings Mountain, and Crowders impacted.

Beyond impacts at the airport, storms also impacted neighbors across Mecklenburg County. The power went out at CMPD Animal Care & Control, forcing the shelter to close early for the day.
Trees were reported as downed in the Ballantyne area, which led to thousands of customers facing power outages according to Duke Energy.
Storm reports came in later in the afternoon and early evening in York County:
