He spent quite some time getting my mom's preferences clarified and then searching for matching AL facilities. All of this was done in less than two days. LONGS, S.C. (WPDE) — The legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers was celebrated in Longs this month as families, veterans and community members gathered to honor five local soldiers and the sacrifices they made.
The all-African American military regiment marks its 160th anniversary this year.
A special ceremony at Chesterfield Missionary Baptist church in Longs honored five local Buffalo Soldiers and their families.
The Buffalo Soldiers were African American soldiers who served in segregated Army units beginning in 1866. They fought with distinction in conflicts that helped shape the nation’s military history, despite facing discrimination when they returned home.
“They had to fight for their country overseas... and when they came home, they had to fight to get a seat at the table,” said George Livingston, a veteran.
Often referred to as unsung heroes, the Buffalo Soldiers are historically known for helping protect the nation’s westward expansion, building roads and serving as some of the first national park rangers.
Organizers said their service helped open doors to military service for generations of African Americans who followed.
“What they did helped pave the way for me. They opened doors for me when I joined the Army,” said Brenda Bankhead, a veteran.
The ceremony in Longs honored the families of Floyd Bellamy, Daniel Bellamy, Luke Chestnut and Fred Hickman Jr., along with Frank Moore Jr, with organizers emphasizing the importance of ensuring their stories continue to be told.
Members of the National Association of Buffalo Soldiers and Troopers Motorcycle Club traveled from across the Carolinas and Florida to pay tribute.
“We're here to show the descendants that the legacy still continues today... what their grandfathers and fathers sacrificed throughout the years,” Cedric Harris said.
For family members of the soldiers, the recognition is about more than remembering the past. It is about making sure future generations understand their roots.
“When I wear this shirt I'm praying someone asks me ‘oh your daddy was a buffalo soldier’ then i can tell them more now,’” Mila Stevenson, daughter of Frank Moore Jr. said.
