GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - A major change is coming to Greenville’s Fire/Rescue personnel, to sustain more retention, and ensure more rest and recovery for first responders after working 24-hour shifts.
On Thursday, the city council voted 5-0 to approve a new schedule change from 24 hours on, 48 hours off to 24 hours on, 72 hours off.
For years, the City of Greenville has operated on a traditional 24/48 model, where first responders will work 24 hour days or more with overtime, with just 48 hours off from work to rest.
Greenville Fire/Rescue Deputy Chief Jesse Harris says the current schedule has led to a high turnover rate for first responders due to large workloads, call volumes, and burnout, with not much time for rest.
“The science shows that one 24-hour shift of sleep deprivation takes about 48 hours to recover from,” he said. “Right now, they work on a 24/48, so if they have any kind of a holdover or overtime schedule, then they don’t have time to recover before they come back in.”
Harris says that the 24/48 schedule is common for fire departments, but because Greenville is the largest fire-based EMS department in the state, 83 percent of their calls are EMS related.
A new schedule, 24/72 will ensure that first responders receive 72 hours off.
Leaders say the new change will retain first responders, boost recruitment, ensure employees a healthy work-life balance, and time off for rest and recovery.
“Being able to do this, it’s transformative for our department,” Harris said. “As well as for the lives of our employees and their families and really for years to come. This changes our schedule going forward so all the folks to come after us so it’s better for everyone.”
Winterville Fire Rescue and EMS, is a station in Pitt County that has already adopted this model.
“Basically, we’re one day on, and then you get three days off,” First-responder Antwan Hardy said. “Those three days, you get more time to be home with family, more time to digest the days you’ve had at work, you know decompress a lot of the workload that we go through.”
Council applauded and shared words of appreciation for the efforts of all first responders in the city after voting to approve.
The new schedule will go into effect in March 2026, and the annual salary of first responders will remain the same.

Those who like to turn up the heat love the different ways each country infuses pepper and spice into its food, from Korean gochujang sauce to Vietnamese chilies and fiery Indian peppercorns. Other dishes like Filipino chicken adobo and Vietnamese pho all pack a savory punch of umami.
The use of fresh ingredients and fermented foods like miso and kimchi brings a healthy aspect to many Asian cuisines. Unique fruits such as kumquat and yuzu also expand the range of flavors restaurants can bring to foods and drinks.
Many diners also like Asian foods because of their fun factor, with Korean barbecue and Chinese hot pot dishes offering communal experiences.
Stacker compiled a list of the highest-rated Asian restaurants in the Greenville area using data from Yelp. Data is as of Aug. 6, 2025. Businesses were filtered to fall under at least one of these categories: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Indian/Pakistani, Vietnamese, Filipino, Malaysian, Pan Asian, or Asian fusion.
Restaurants selected using Yelp's ranking system, which calculates an adjusted rating value that takes into account the number of ratings as well as the rating score itself. Only businesses with at least 20 reviews, and within a 10-kilometer radius of Greenville were considered. Also, in an effort to highlight independent businesses and local chains, those with more than 10 locations nationally, based on our Yelp data, were not included.
