WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — K&W Cafeteria is abruptly closing its doors after 88 years in business, according to the website.

"K&W has always been more than a restaurant - it has been a gathering place, a home for Sunday traditions, and a warm table for millions of families across generations. We are deeply grateful for every guest who walked through our doors, shared a meal with us, and made us part of their lives," wrote the chain on Facebook.

The southeastern food chain, which opened its first location in Winston-Salem in 1937, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection back in 2020. According to its social media pages, K&W had eight restaurants located in North Carolina, with five of those situated in the Triad.

Falcon Holdings LLC. a restaurant management company based in Texas, owns K&W.

WFMY News 2 sent reporters to several K&W locations around the Triad on Monday to get reaction from workers and community members.

The general manager at one of the locations in Winston-Salem said he felt awful for his employees. Just a few weeks ago, he said he met with all of them as a group and told them the location was performing well.

"I looked them dead in the face and said we were doing good and we were going to be great," he told WFMY News 2. "And now look ... My last words were a lie."

A former employee at the Friendly Center location said over 300 employees lost their jobs across 16 different locations suddenly Monday.

Marthia Liggins has been working at the restaurant for the past four years. She thought her job was pretty secure until she got a call Monday morning instructing her to come and gather her things and that the store was closing.

Liggins and Faith Adkins both worked at the K&W location at Friendly Center in Greensboro. Both said they were caught off guard by the news.

"We didn't get to see everybody. We only got to see the ones that were here," they told WFMY News 2. "I made a few phone calls and told a few people that they don't have a job, and they said, 'Stop joking.' And I said, 'No, all of K&W is closed.' A lot of them didn't even get phone calls."

Liggins feels the company could have done a little better job at telling them and giving them a heads up.

Longtime Greensboro resident Susanna Albright drove to the Friendly Center location immediately after hearing the news of the restaurant's closure.

"I stopped what I was doing, and I drove to my beloved," exclaimed Albright.

Albright recalled what she will miss most. "The lima beans, specifically, and the chocolate cream pie. My boyfriend will miss the fried chicken ... Coming through the line, I've seen the same faces there forever, seen the same people."

Ron Woodley drove to Greensboro from Asheboro to eat a late lunch on Monday, only to find its doors locked when he arrived. The restaurant holds a special place in his heart.

"I think K&W's been here since the 30s," Woodley said. "I was born in 1943, so I remember coming up with my mom when I was a little kid. I brought a parakeet one day and it got loose in the restaurant, so that kind of shook up everybody. But a gentleman finally caught it and put it back in the cage."

Dax Allred, grandson of K&W founder Grady Allred Sr., shared the following statement with WFMY News 2:

While we are heartbroken to hear the news, the Allred family is forever grateful to the generations of dedicated team members and loyal customers who made K&W an iconic brand for over 80 years. Although the K&W history is now complete, long live the countless memories of families and friends coming together over a meal at their local K&W Cafeteria. I will miss that chocolate cream pie!

Greensboro mayor-elect Marikay Abuzuaiter said K&W cafeteria has always been a mainstay in the community.

"While I’m not aware of the reasons they are closing, it is always sad to see any business close, as it always affects those who work there the most," she said.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has paid off $11.4 million of its debt to the state, marking a key milestone in the district's financial recovery.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools announced Tuesday it has paid off the $11.4 million it owed to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, a major step in addressing its financial crisis.

"It's a huge weight lifted. It's just such a positive step toward getting us all back in good financial health," said Deanna Kaplan, the WS/FCS Board Chair.

Kaplan and Vice Chair of the school board Alex Bohnannon presented updates on the district's ongoing debt repayment plan to the State Board of Education. They confirmed that the district has made significant progress, already having reduced its remaining debt from an estimated $46 million to about $22 million.

“I feel like everyone knows the importance of getting our school system back in good fiscal health, because a good, strong community is a good, strong education system,” Kaplan added.

As of October 28, the district paid off the final $3.4 million of the $11.4 million owed to the state. The funds were raised through a community fundraising effort led by the Winston-Salem Foundation.

State Board of Education Chair Eric Davis said the district is heading in the right direction, making difficult but necessary decisions.

"They still have a long way to go in terms of restoring fund balance, but the momentum is definitely positive," Davis said.

Starting in December, the district will make monthly payments of $500,000 toward the remaining debt. In the following fiscal year, payments will likely drop to $350,000 a month, with a possible completion date in late 2027.

Davis urged state lawmakers to pass a budget to assist WS/FCS and other public school systems in North Carolina.

"They still have a long way to go in terms of restoring fund balance, but the momentum is definitely positive," Davis said.

Interim Superintendent Catty Moore will step down in just a few weeks, and Dr. Don Phipps will take over as the new superintendent for the next 15 months.

The City of Greensboro will have new leadership as Mayor Nancy Vaughan announced in May 2024, during a city council meeting, that she would not seek reelection after serving for 11 years. The city will also elect at least three new council members. Get the latest election results below.

The town of Summerfield will have a new mayor after the former mayor, Tim Sessoms announced his resignation in August. The resignation came as the town was plagued by issues among its officials. The entire town staff resigned in May 2024, citing a toxic work environment. Irregularities with the town's payroll and IT systems were also reported. In February of this year, the town launched a forensic audit to investigate improper payments and expenses. In September, the town announced it had completed its internal investigation and delivered the results of the investigation to the Guilford County Sheriff's Office.

Voters in Summerfield also decided on a town council seat.

Only a few months ago, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school district was asking the state to waive interest on its debt. But on Tuesday, the district announced it has fully repaid the $11.3 million it owed the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, closing a chapter in a financial crisis that left the school system tens of millions of dollars in deficit and under state scrutiny.

The payment, which came sooner than expected, settles the state’s portion of a $46.1 million budget deficit that led to layoffs and a rare intervention from the State Board of Education.

“On October 28, NCDPI received the full payment of the approximately 3.4 million dollars still owed by WS/FC schools to the State for the school system overdrafts of state money during the 2024-2025 academic year. This is a very positive development,” DPI said in a statement to NC Newsline.

A state audit report released in August found that district leaders used temporary federal COVID-19 funds to cover permanent salaries, approved purchase orders without money in the budget to cover them and delayed routine account reconciliations.

On Tuesday, officials reported that the final $3.4 million payment to the state last month came from a community fundraising effort led by the Winston-Salem Foundation’s Futures Fund.

“The Futures Fund is collecting donations directly for the purpose of paying out the district’s debt,” said Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Board Chair Deanna Kaplan. “The fundraising is ongoing, and I just want to thank so much the community and all of the partners for all of their efforts and coming together for our school district.”

State Board of Education Chair Eric Davis praised the effort as evidence of growing public confidence. “The progress made on this and the support demonstrated from the community for our students in Forsyth County is phenomenal, and we congratulate you and every one of those who participated in this groundswell of support.”

District officials told a state board committee that they are now focused on paying the balance still owed to contractors.

A $4.25 million debt to a custodial company has been restructured and will be paid over 10 years under a new contract approved last month, the committee heard. The district also owes $6.1 million to a staffing firm and roughly $1.6 million to Forsyth County, along with an additional $2 million it borrowed from its own child nutrition fund.

Officials said the district has already paid down more than $22 million and plans to set aside $3.5 million for debt payments this fiscal year and $4.2 million next year, aiming to finish paying off its short-term debts by 2027.

Under an agreement with Forsyth County, every private dollar raised to reduce the debt results in an equal amount of county debt being forgiven. So far, the matching program has already cleared more than $3.4 million.

In September, the state board ordered a full review of the district’s finances, and last month it hired Mauldin & Jenkins to audit internal controls. The district is also forming a new citizen audit committee made up of Forsyth County residents with finance expertise to help monitor progress.
