As you walk into the new Beyond Borders Café at 1036 Sterling Ave. in downtown Flossmoor, you’re greeted to a cozy environment with warm colors and antique items that transport you through time.
Owners Jennifer and Christopher Zarozny opened the doors and welcomed the community to the café on Saturday, Aug. 9. About 30 people were on hand, including Mayor Michelle Nelson and village trustees, family and friends.
The menu lists a variety of coffees, including drip coffee, lattes and cold brew, along with teas and energy drinks. Pastries and small grab-and-go foods and pre-packaged salads are also available.
The vintage theme came about from the historical look of the downtown Flossmoor area, Jennifer said. The pieces on display range from the 1800s to the 1950s.
“We traveled all over to pick up these antiques,” she said. “We went to Iowa, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, anything we could do to find the pieces that we knew connected with this place that we were happy with.”
Beyond Borders Cafe is getting its coffee beans from Conscious Cup, coffee roasters in Crystal Lake.
“It’s a smaller family-owned operation and what drew us to them was that they actually go to the locations they source their coffee from,” Christopher said.
According to the Conscious Cup website, the coffee is sourced from places in Venezuela, Sumatra and Ethiopia.
Along with having ethically sourced coffee beans, people from the company came into the cafe to help train the employees in all things coffee, Christopher said.
With the cafe having a liquor license, Jennifer said in the near future Beyond Borders Cafe plans to introduce beers and wines for customers to enjoy.
They also will have a back room, currently under renovation, that will act as an indoor-outdoor area with large windows and French doors.
As for what the future holds, Jennifer said if things go well with the current location, they’d love to open more cafes in the future.
Hours of operation for Beyond Borders Café are 4:30 a.m .to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekends.
More information on the cafe can be found on the business’s website and Facebook page.
