Uniting for Awareness: Events in Glenview and Chicago During National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month

Migraine are a disabling neurological condition that affects over 39 million people in the U.S. alone, many of whom go undiagnosed or undertreated.
This June, National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month brings individuals, caregivers, and communities together to shine a light on the realities of living with migraine, challenge common misconceptions, and promote access to care.
Fundraising walks, online discussions, and other initiatives foster understanding and solidarity for those navigating life with migraine, especially older adults whose symptoms may be overlooked or dismissed.

Shining a Light on Migraine: Why Awareness Matters
Raising awareness not only challenges stigma and misinformation but also drives early detection and better treatment outcomes.
Awareness efforts are most powerful when they’re rooted in the community. Events like Miles for Migraine and Shades for Migraine Day offer more than symbolic gestures; they help create a sense of belonging, reduce isolation, and build momentum for change.
Educational programs and public discussions allow people to share experiences, learn about triggers, treatment options, advocacy, and support loved ones living with migraine.

How Always Best Care Supports Seniors with Migraine
At Always Best Care, we understand how debilitating migraine can be, and we’re here to provide thoughtful, tailored support that helps seniors feel more comfortable and safe.
Recognizing Symptoms and Triggers in Seniors
Unlike younger populations, seniors may experience migraines without the classic pounding headache. Symptoms such as visual disturbances, dizziness, confusion, or gastrointestinal discomfort may be more prominent. These can be mistaken for aging-related issues or other conditions, making accurate diagnosis and management even more important.
Our care team is trained to recognize potential migraine symptoms and triggers, which often include:
- Stress or emotional changes.
- Disrupted sleep routines.
- Strong odors or fumes.
- Certain foods (like chocolate, cheese, or processed meats).
- Dehydration.
By tracking and understanding these triggers, families and care teams can reduce the frequency and severity of attacks.
How Our Caregivers Help Manage Migraine at Home
At Always Best Care, we go beyond basic support to deliver personalized in-home care that can help prevent and manage migraine episodes in seniors. Our caregivers assist by:
- Maintaining a calm, trigger-free environment, adjusting lighting, minimizing noise, and managing scents or outdoor exposure.
- Preparing meals that avoid known dietary triggers and encouraging hydration throughout the day.
- Helping clients maintain a consistent sleep and activity routine to minimize stress and fatigue.
- Monitoring symptoms and documenting migraine frequency or intensity, which can be shared with healthcare providers.
- Prompting timely medication use at the first sign of a migraine, supporting early intervention.
