When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Deptford, NJ, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your NJ's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Deptford, NJ understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Deptford, NJ

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities

  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring

TRENTON – Three family members from Gloucester County have been accused of taking part in a massive homeowners’ insurance fraud scheme and stealing well more than $100,000 through phony claims.

Husband and wife, 65-year-old Donald Feldman and 61-year-old Carolyn Feldman each face charges that include second-degree counts of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, insurance fraud and theft by deception, as well as third-degree commercial bribery, insurance fraud, and theft by deception.

They were arrested on Tuesday.

West Deptford family faces insurance fraud charges

Their 34-year-old daughter, Brittany Feldman, faced third-degree insurance fraud and theft by deception.

All three Feldmans, who are West Deptford residents, were additionally charged with third-degree conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and theft by deception.

Former insurance examiner allegedly approved phony claims

State prosecutors said the Feldmans carried out the scheme with help from John Philbin, already convicted of a broader insurance fraud scam.

Philbin was a former claims examiner with Assurant Insurance Company.

In May, he pleaded guilty to third-degree insurance fraud. The state will recommend five years of probation with restitution, when he is sentenced.

Investigators have said that over the span of about a year, Philbin got cash kickbacks from the Feldmans after approving the family’s phony insurance claims.

Fake construction company allegedly used in insurance claims

Between April 2022 and May 2023, Donald Feldman worked with Carolyn Feldman and Philbin to create or submit about 10 made-up Assurant insurance claims.

Among those phony scams, Donald Feldman took out an Assurant policy for a Camden County property owned by another person and submitted multiple claims on the Sicklerville site.

Claims included made-up estimates and invoices for emergency mitigation or restoration work, which Donald Feldman said was performed by “American Construction and Restoration,” prosecutors said.

The company appeared to be made-up, too, as a search of statewide business records found no filings or registrations for it.

Donald Feldman is also accused of submitting invoices for mitigation services at other properties — where the actual insurance policy holders said he did not complete.

For each claim, Donald Feldman notified Philbin, who at the time was a field claims examiner.

Philbin then reassigned the claims to himself and approved about $108,000 in payments to Donald Feldman for work that was never done.

In exchange, Philbin received about 20% of the cash, which prosecutors say was carried out by Carolyn Feldman.

She is accused of coordinating claim information and cashing insurance claim checks, before delivering a cut to Philbin.

Daughter accused in separate Mantua property claims

The role that Brittany Feldman is accused of playing was connected to two phony insurance claims involving a Mantua property, despite not living there or owning the residence.

In addition, all three Feldmans were also charged in connection with two allegedly fraudulent claims involving a property in Mantua that Brittany Feldman neither owned nor occupied.

Brittany Feldman secured an Assurant policy for the property and submitted claims of windstorm-related and animal-related damages, between March 2023 and May 2023.

Those claims were supported by made-up estimates and invoices from Feldman Construction, a family business in which she held an ownership interest.

Philbin assigned the claims to himself and approved $30,000 in payments directed to Brittany Feldman — of which he also got about 20% of the money, prosecutors said.

State officials condemn accused insurance fraud

“New Jersey families pay for homeowners’ insurance to protect what they have worked hard to build,” state Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said in a written statement on Wednesday.

“The defendants in this case allegedly defrauded an insurance company for their own gain. These cases reflect our commitment to protecting honest policyholders and holding those responsible accountable.”

“An insurance claim should be paid because it is legitimate, not because the person approving it stands to receive a share of the proceeds,” Acting Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Bernard J. Cooney said in the same release.

As of Wednesday, attorneys were not yet listed for any of the Feldman defendants.

The Brief

No one was seriously injured after a 3-alarm fire tore through an apartment complex in Deptford overnight Sunday.

Fire breaks out at Narraticon apartments

What we know:

Firefighters responded to Hemlock Court in the Narraticon Apartments complex just after midnight for reports of a fire.

The fire quickly struck a second alarm as firefighters battled heavy flames, and reached a third alarm a short time later.

One person suffered smoke inhalation, but refused medical treatment, according to firefighters.

The fire was placed under control around 3 a.m. after a two-hour battle.

Nine units were impacted by the fire. The American Red Cross is helping those displaced find shelter.

Residents escape safely

What they're saying:

Deptford Fire Chief Richard Thomas spoke to reporters at the scene of the fire.

"All the residents got out, that helped big time," Chief Thomas said. "Some of [the residents] were helping us stretch hoses."

Restoration crews spent Monday boarding up what remained of the fire-damaged Narraticon Apartments in Deptford Township. The apartments are now off limits to 12 families as the property owner works to find them new housing.

Officials say the fire began on the third floor porch where Angela Randolph was staying with her daughter and two children.

Randolph described the moments leading up to their escape. "I was laying down and all I heard was my granddaughter run in and say fire, fire..and she was like grandma come on come on," said Randolph. As her daughter knocked on neighbors' doors to warn others, Randolph tried to fight the fire herself but had no success. "I left them for a minute and went to the kitchen sink filling up buckets of water to throw on the fire but it was not doing any good. It was just puffin. It happened so fast," said Randolph.

The Deptford Fire Marshal is leading the investigation and tells Fox 29 it could take weeks to determine how the fire started. Investigators are examining several possibilities, and are looking into whether an e-bike battery could have played a role in the fire.

Angela Randolph expressed gratitude that her family made it out safely. "It’s ok. It’s going to be ok. God was with us. It’s ok. God has a plan," said Randolph.

Neighbor Melissa Dwornick described her reaction to seeing the fire. "I was like oh is someone setting off fireworks right there. And said no no that’s a fire," said Dwornick.

The property owner is working to relocate all affected families, and many are staying in hotels, or with friends or family.

Questions remain unknown

What we don't know:

Officials have not yet determined the official cause of the fire, and it remains under investigation.

Verizon FiOS outage frustrates customers, disrupts businesses in Deptford and Woodbury

GLOUCESTER COUNTY, N.J. (WPVI) -- New Jersey residents and businesses in Deptford and Woodbury have been dealing with a Verizon FiOS outage that has left some customers without television, internet and phone service since Monday.

The outage has affected homes and businesses across the area, prompting complaints from customers who say restoration estimates have been repeatedly delayed.

"We've had an outage now - TV, internet and phone since Monday," said Jerry McFadden of Deptford.

Michael Anthony, also of Deptford, said the outage has forced him to rely on mobile data.

"I'm a little frustrated. I gotta use all my data if I want to go on the internet," Anthony said.

Jackie Gulla of Deptford said the disruption has been especially difficult for her family.

"My husband and I both work from home. And it's been a struggle. We've been on a hot spot. And we have three toddlers. No TV, no tablets," Gulla said.

The outage has also affected local businesses. Macy's and Dick's Sporting Goods were closed for two days because of technical issues related to the internet disruption. Signs posted at the stores said they would reopen once service was restored.

Some restaurants remained open despite the outage. Employees at Outback Steakhouse and Bonefish Grill said they were affected, although Bonefish Grill was accepting cash only when Action News visited.

"We have a gift card. I'm glad you told us, so we'll see what happens," said Dorissa Riley of Washington Township.

In a statement, a Verizon spokesperson said the outage was caused by damage to a fiber line.

"Our team determined that an accidental third-party fiber cut caused interruptions to our Fios service in some communities. Our engineers and local emergency crews are working quickly to resolve it. Repairs require access to sections of the NJ Turnpike, which is causing longer restoration times. However, we anticipate full restoration of service by this evening," the spokesperson said.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority told Action News Verizon has been granted permission to work along the highway, though severe weather has periodically forced crews off the roadway for safety reasons Wednesday evening.

Verizon said it expects all affected customers to have service restored by Thursday evening. The company has not disclosed how many customers were impacted by the outage.

Verizon also has not released information about customer credits or compensation. The company is encouraging affected customers to call 1-800-VERIZON for assistance.

Game of the Day

Rumson-Fair Haven at No. 6 Shore, 4

Shore was put to the test this past week and passed with flying colors, earning victories against both state-ranked Seneca and Pingry. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Baxter was brilliant in the cage during the team’s 2-1 win over Seneca on Oct. 1, making 24 stops in the one-goal win. Senior leaders Marielle Montenegro and Marin Stefanelli each found the back of the cage during the team’s 3-1 win over Pingry on Saturday.
