My sister would throw people in and out of her house; it was crazy. She died on December 5th. Always Best Care sent incredible people. I don't know where they came from, but they had one girl who was the only person my sister never attempted to throw out of the house. I'd never hear one bad word about this woman who was actually pulling double shifts at the end because my sister liked her so much. For some reason, this woman understood my sister and brain cancer. Brain cancer is hard to deal with because people could be pretty mean and abusive and they don't know what they're doing really. My sister was also going blind at the same time. It was not easy. I just wanted to say what wonderful care we received from Always Best Care. It was amazing. They were just coming and being there. My sister was crazy, and she didn't want anybody overnight, until she finally let me have someone come in overnight. On that night, she died. She got to die in her home, which is what I'm trying to do because that too was the most important thing of all. Always Best Care was able to staff at short notice and send really good people. I was impressed, and I would highly recommend them. They would help my sister get to the bathroom. She weighed 70 pounds when she died, but she was still able to walk. She had cancers on both her femurs, and her blood pressure was 80/47. They just helped with everything, like fixing her small meals, fixing coffee, and talking to her if she wanted to talk or not talking to her if she didn't want to talk. They were just very great with their help. My sister had brain cancer and she was belligerent. Always Best Care would find people within their staff. Also, it didn't take them long, I didn't have to wait. We had letters from others saying they don't have staff right now. With Always Best Care, I did it over the phone with a woman who was a Godsend. I think the caregiver was sent almost the first day and was there every day except on the weekend when they sent someone else. That person seemed to work out OK, too, which amazed me. Hurricane season is ramping up around the Grand Strand, but tourist season in the Myrtle Beach area is still going strong.
August through October is the busiest time for tropical storms and hurricanes around South Carolina and, for visitors enjoying the last of summer or ushering in the fall at the beach, that vacation might bring some unwanted weather.
An extreme weather warning or watch doesn’t always mean you have to cancel your beach trip, but it’s important to be prepared. If you’re not from the area, here’s what you should pack, prepare and plan for a trip to Myrtle Beach in hurricane season.
If a hurricane or tropical storm might impact the area while you’re visiting the Grand Strand, it’s essential to have an emergency plan.
Make sure everyone you’re traveling with has one another’s emergency contact information and knows your evacuation plan. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) Know Your Zone initiative identifies specific, location-based evacuation zones for coastal areas.
“In South Carolina, it’s crucial to be aware of your designated hurricane evacuation zone and the routes available to you,” said SCEMD Chief of Public Information and External Affairs Tiffanie Barrett.
Coastal areas around the Grand Strand are in zones A, B or C. To find out if your accommodations are included, enter the address on the Know Your Zone webpage.
Although storm conditions can change evacuation plans, it’s a good idea to learn your designated evacuation route on the South Carolina Hurricane Guide Website.
“These routes are equipped with signage to guide drivers during evacuations,” Barrett said. “In certain situations, lane reversals may be implemented to maximize the flow of traffic away from affected areas.”
Any trip to the beach requires certain necessities, like vacation outfits and sunscreen, but if an extreme weather watch or warning is issued, you might need some additional supplies.
Before tropical storms and hurricanes hit, some locals prepare by filling bathtubs, trash cans or buckets with water. This can be useful for hygiene and flushing toilets if you have a tub in your accommodations, but refrain from drinking it.
As far as stocking supplies, guests shouldn’t need to pack anything special for a Grand Strand vacation in hurricane season because accommodations should assist guests, according to the Visit Myrtle Beach Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications Diane Charno.
“Accommodation property managers in the Myrtle Beach area will assist guests by following hospitality industry best practices like monitoring storm forecasts, keeping emergency supplies on hand (like water and flashlights) and communicating safety procedures to guests promptly and clearly” Charno said.
But if you’re in town when a named storm could hit, you may not want to rely on that manager in a worst case scenario, so it’s a good idea to make sure you’ll have emergency essentials before inclement weather arrives.
Whether you’re braving rain and flooding or forced to evacuate, if a hurricane or tropical storm hits the Grand Strand, you could find yourself in a car.
“During hurricane season, make sure your vehicle is ready in case you need to evacuate,” Barrett said. “Keep the gas tank at least half full, service your vehicle, check the tires, brakes and battery.”
If you can, top off your vehicle before setting off. Gas station lines will probably be long, but demand will likely grow.
If hurricane or tropical storm conditions are possible, officials will issue a hurricane watch 48 hours prior to the possible onset. If that happens, review your evacuation plan, prepare your temporary accommodations and stay up-to-date on official announcements.
When conditions are expected officials issue a hurricane warning 36 hours before the expected onset. In that case, finish preparations and evacuate if ordered.
To stay informed, establish multiple ways of receiving emergency information, like wireless mobile alerts, NOAA weather radios and local broadcasts. SCEMD offers emergency alerts through text, call and mail through its CodeRED program.

For newcomers to the area, the words might not mean much, but to local foodies and restauranteurs, Calabash seafood is a local gem — which grants some local Calabash buffets thousands of five-star reviews. The seafood style is actually named for the nearby North Carolina fishing town it hails from. Calabash, North Carolina, is widely renowned for its fresh-caught seafood, perfectly fried in a crispy coating.
According to Calabash connoisseurs, it’s that coating that sets Calabash seafood apart from your average fried shrimp or clams.
But where can you get real Calabash seafood in Myrtle Beach?
“We got the name ‘Seafood Capital of the World’ with lightly battered, deep-fried, locally-caught seafood,” Kurt Hardee, co-owner of Beck’s Restaurant Calabash said of his town.
Calabash has more than 30 restaurants serving up seafood, despite being a small town with a few thousand residents. The Calabash seafood tradition can be traced back to the 1930s, when fishermen would batter and fry their daily catches at community picnics called “fish camps,” The Sun News previously reported.
Hardee and his sister used to operate Ella’s of Calabash, another Calabash seafood restaurant that burnt down in 2023. But Hardee’s hopes of sharing Calabash seafood with others didn’t go down in flames.
“It’s all I’ve ever known,” he said. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”
Hardee said that part of what makes Calabash-style seafood so special is that someone comparing it to traditional fried seafood would “absolutely” be able to tell the difference.
“It’s lighter, it doesn’t sit heavy in your stomach,” he said. “You can taste the goodness in it.”
That lightness and crispiness comes from the frying process, he explained. At Beck’s, Hardee said seafood is sprinkled with salt, pepper and a “light dusting of flour” before being quickly fried — for about one to two minutes — at a scalding 350 degrees. Evaporated milk is used to help the batter stick to the seafood.
McKenzie Shaw, a host at Hooks Calabash Seafood Buffet in Myrtle Beach, echoed Hardee’s claims that Calabash seafood isn’t like other fried food. She believes diners can tell the difference “instantly,” just by looking at it.
Shaw said she fell in love with Calabash-style seafood when she started working at Hooks, because it tastes lighter and fresher than other fried seafood.
At Hooks, the kitchen’s frying station is bustling each day as the buffet prepares to open. Up until the moment the doors open to customers, sizzling crab legs, scallops and even frog legs are being pulled from the fryer. They’re all coated in a crispy mixture of buttermilk breading, egg and baking soda, according to managers Seth and Artur Muradian, who share no relation.
The key, Artur Muradian explained, is frying items quickly, so the breading doesn’t become too heavy or oily. Often, this means ensuring each piece of food that goes in the fryer is small enough that it cooks evenly in a short amount of time.
Driving through Myrtle Beach, visitors are nearly guaranteed to pass by a few Calabash seafood eateries.
For those looking to get a taste of the lightly battered, deep-fried culinary staple themselves, here are the highest-rated restaurants that report serving seafood fried in the Calabash style.
Captain Benjamin’s Calabash Seafood Buffet is one of the highest-rated Myrtle Beach spots to try some Calabash seafood.
With about 32,000 Google reviews coming out to an average 4.6 out of five stars, Captain Benjamin’s has established itself as a local favorite, and claims to be the largest seafood buffet in the city.
Captain Benjamin’s is located at 401 South Kings Highway, and meals there are reported to typically cost between $30 and $50 per person.
The restaurant boasts more than 27,000 reviews on Google, awarding it an average of 4.7 stars.
The pirate-themed eatery offers an all-you-can-eat buffet, as well as a la carte steak and seafood.
Crabby George’s is located at 7904 North Kings Highway, and meals there are reported to cost around $50-$100 per person.
Hooks Calabash Seafood Buffet, mentioned above, offers an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet, as well as other menu items.

At 5 pm, the center of Tropical Storm Erin was located near latitude 17.0 North, longitude 38.3 West. Erin is moving toward the west near, 22 mph. A slightly slower westward motion is expected tonight through Thursday, with a west-northwestward motion beginning Thursday night and continuing into the weekend.
On the forecast track, the center of Erin is likely to move near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend. Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph with higher gusts.
Little change in strength is expected during the next day or so, but gradual strengthening is forecast to begin by late Wednesday. Erin will likely become a hurricane by late Thursday.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles north of the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1006 mb.
It is too soon to determine the path beyond this weekend, so make sure to keep up to date with the latest changes.
It is still too early to determine what impacts, if any, Erin may bring to the northern Leeward Islands, Bermuda, or the east coast of the United States. As we approach the climatological peak of the hurricane season, it is an opportune time to ensure your preparedness plans are in place.
It’s actually quite difficult for a hurricane to make it all the way across the Atlantic and impact the US as the vast majority of storms turn out to sea (the ones that have made it across have been quite noteworthy including Florence). Out of all of the storms that have passed within 150 miles of Erin’s current location, only 6 have made landfall in the US...or roughly 6%. That statistic plus the latest data trends on Erin point to what will most likely be a safe passage well off shore. However, that scenario is still not quite set in stone so let’s keep an eye on it for the next several days.

Two months into the official hurricane season, National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters have updated their earlier predictions, now expecting the Atlantic basin will see nine to 14 more named storms this year, five to nine of which could become hurricanes, including two to five major hurricanes.
Those ranges are all in line with an average year, which sees 14 tropical storms, seven of which develop into hurricanes, including three major hurricanes.
This week the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration dropped the chance of an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season from 60% to 50%. While the possibility of a more intense season remains strong, there’s a 35% chance of a near-normal season and a 15% chance of a below-normal season.
Although hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, historically the majority of tropical storms and hurricanes strike South Carolina in August, September and October.
“We’re heading into the more climatologically favorable time of the season, when activity typically ramps up, so as we head into now to early-to-mid September, it’s kind of like the peak,” NWS meteorologist Bob Bright said. “So it does generally look like conditions have become more favorable with potential for some storms that develop and potentially impact the area in the next few weeks.”
But the number of named storms doesn’t necessarily determine the impacts of a given season. Tropical Storms Andrea, Barry, Chantal and Dexter have already moved through the Atlantic Basin this season, though none majorly affected South Carolina.
“We’ve seen seasons where there’s a lot of storms, but most of them stay off-shore and don’t really affect anyone,” Bright said. “So it’s really no strong correlation with the number of storms all together and the impacts.”
Heading into the peak of hurricane season, experts stress the importance of storm preparedness. South Carolina is among the states most vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms, according to the state’s Emergency Management Division.
Experts recommend establishing multiple ways of receiving emergency alerts, identifying your home’s flood risk and evacuation zone, learning predetermined evacuation routes and creating a family emergency plan.
“It only takes one, and everybody should be prepared no matter what the seasonal outlook is, because we have seen seasons where the total number of storms maybe isn’t that high, but we still get significantly impacted by storms,” Bright said.
