LYLES, Tenn. (WSMV) - A Sumner County man is being hailed as a hero after rescuing students during a school bus crash on Monday.
The bus, which had 19 students on board, ended up in a dry creek bed, flipped on its side after hitting a bridge, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Several of the students and the female bus driver suffered minor injuries in the crash.
Leading up to this, Earnest Wright says he was outside cooking as the bus passed by, while waiting for his grandchildren.
“I seen the bus come around the curve, it seemed like it just kept going straight,” Wright recalled. “I look down there she hit the bridge and next thing I know the bus came over the bridge, then went over the creek.”
At least five students reportedly were injured, according to THP.

The crash prompted Wright to take action, who says he evacuated multiple students.
“I did get some of the people out,” Wright said. “I told the woman next door to call 911, ‘cause I needed some more help getting these people out, but everything turned out alright.”
Multiple agencies from across Sumner County responded to the scene.
Most of the students were transported to a school and reunited with their parents as first responders investigated the crash.
While the cause has yet to be determined, Wright says he is grateful to have been there to help out.
“I feel good about doing that, it gets to my heart,” Wright said. “The way that bus flipped over like that - thank God. All I can say is thank God.”
THP cited the driver for failing to exercise due caution, which is a Class C misdemeanor offense.
