VA Funded In-Home Care

Always Best Care Will Do All The Work Needed To Get Your Family Member The Funding They Deserve.

If you're like most folks living in the United States, chances are, someone in your family or someone you know has served time in the military. Veterans truly deserve our deepest love, support, and care. Yet, many of these selfless men and women experience feelings of isolation and struggle with everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, and self-care. After all the hard work and bravery these soldiers dedicated to our country, they have earned the right to have a caregiver assist them with their daily needs.

Fortunately, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a range of home care services tailored to support both Veterans and their family members. These services are carried out by trained in-home caregivers who visit clients daily to provide essential care. As a home care company that truly values our Veterans, we are proud to connect Veterans to expert franchise owners who can help them get the essential care they need.

If your loved one is a Veteran and needs Veterans community care funding in Lake Worth or funding for another VA home care program, know that we are here to help. All it takes is a call to Always Best Care to get started. From there, we'll put you in touch with a local Always Best Care franchise owner who will do all the work needed to get your family member the funding they deserve.

VA FUNDED In-HOME CARE

Qualifying for Always Best Care's VA Community Care Network (CCN)

The VACCN Homemaker/Home Health Aide & Respite Care is a benefit offered to Veterans who require assistance with activities associated with daily living. Homemakers and Home Health Aides, while not nurses themselves, are trained professionals who can provide support and care to Veterans in their own homes.

They are supervised by an Always Best Care registered nurse who assesses the Veteran's care needs and supervises each individual case.

“I have worked with, and explored working with, various agencies and registries in the Palm Beach County area. I am picky. Always Best Care is qualitatively a notch above every other organization I’ve encountered. Responsive. Amiable. Professional. The aide, Islande, who has worked with my mom is top-notch for our needs. And... I have no doubt Steve (the agency’s owner) and his staff would strive to find someone else, if it hadn’t been a fit.If you are looking for Nursing Care, I strongly recommend giving Always Best Care a chance.BTW: It is important to understand that working with an Nursing Agency (like Always Best Care), means the staff are employees, not independent contractors (as they are when working through a Nursing Registry). An Agency is vested in having good employees, and a good agency wants you to be happy. But even all Agencies are not created equal. I worked with one (Alternative Health Care) where aides did not always show up! That was painful and incredibly stressful, and the manager and other higher-up staff didn’t give a hoot.”

“We have been using Always Best Care for my mom for two years now and I am hear to say that they are the best we have been with. The Caregivers go above and beyond what we expect and treat my with nothing but love. Fran and Steve and Claudia are with us 24/7 everyday. It has been a real rollercoaster with my mom’s issues, but they are definitely our rock of support. Michelle, who is mom’s full time daytime caregiver has been with her since we started and she is like part of the family. She calls and checks on her off hours because she cares and there is no price you can put on that. If you do not try this agency, you are missing out.”

“Steve and Claudia at Always Best Care Senior Services were just awesome in how they provided at home care for my mother Carmen. Starting with the initial consultation by Steve to learn about mom's personal care needs to the follow-up visit of a registered nurse to the eventual placement of a compassionate caregiver; every step of their service was well thought out and they truly delivered on providing a level of care for mom that exceeded our families (and mom's) expectations. TESTIMONIALS

“I have been utilizing Always Best Care Senior Services for 2 years to care 24/7 for my elderly parents. I am very pleased with their services. The Owners and Office Staff bend over backwards to make sure that there is always coverage, to alert my parents Caregiver Team of any requests that I make, to advise me when there is an issue with my parents or their dog. The Caregiver Team working with my parents are all compassionate and caring, knowledgeable and skilled. Sadly, my Father passed away in the fall of 2020. Each of their Caregivers, the Owners and the Office Staff expressed to me that they would like to attend his memorial service when we are able to have it. During the weeks he was slipping away, the Caregiver team not only took care of my parents, they looked after me, gently reminding me to eat, rest or take a break. They truly care not only for my parents, but for all our family. I can’t begin to express what a comfort it has been to have them caring for my parents, especially during the pandemic when visits are prohibited. They are my eyes and ears. Working intimately with my parents, the Caregivers are very tuned in to even subtle changes. If you are in the market and looking for a senior services/home health care company, I strongly urge you to reach out to Always Best Care Senior Services. You’ll be happy you did.”

From the highest level administration (Stephen and Beverly) to the amazing caregivers and schedulers -- the entire staff have been responsive and attentive from day one. They have been unfailingly respectful, caring, professional and competent. They were flexible and kind when my mother became terminally ill. And readily available and again responsive when we reinitiated services for my father. Their attentiveness and professionalism is reflected in the amazingly kind, competent and resourceful caregiving staff. “Always Best Care has been wonderful in many ways. Steve Snell, Owner and Area Representative, and Beverly Casper, RN were patient, kind and respectful while my Dad came to terms with the idea that he really did need help. They were flexible and open and that made all the difference. My Dad's aide Fabienne is responsible and caring and now more of a companion than aide. Steve and his scheduling team has been proactive about any changes that needed to occur and very good about communicating with me both by phone and email. Having them on board has lessened the worry I feel on a daily basis. My mother had a prolonged illness and through the years we dealt with many health care agencies. The attention and care we have received from Always Best Care is, by far, the best we ever have experienced and we are very grateful to have found them.”

“Always Best Care was a life savor for my parents especially my Dad who is a former Veteran. Steve helped us reach out to the right contacts with the VA and was able to take us thru the process step by step to ensure that my Dad was able to get the most benefits possible to him which ended being about 32 hours of free home health care a week. The aids have been great for both of my parents. They have formed great relationships with Carol and Fred and now as of recently AnnMarie. The aids help getting groceries and picking up medication and also clean up around the house. They feel very cared for and have really turned the corner in feeling happier and well cared for. We are extremely grateful to Steve and his team at Always Best for working with us and ensuring my parents safety and well being! It's a great agency and all the workers who are part of this business!!”

THE Next Steps

How to Qualify for VA Funded In-Home Care

Whether you are a Veteran and need in-home care services or you're a family member of a Veteran, it's important to qualify for our VA Community Care Network. To qualify, consider the following:

  • Veterans must be honorably discharged. They do NOT need to be war-era Veterans
  • Veterans must sign up for VA Healthcare

You should be aware that any home care services that are authorized depend on you or your loved one's physician's assessment of needs.

How To Enroll In

Always Best Care's VA Community Care Network

Gaining access to VA senior care requires a three-step enrollment process. Those steps include the following:

First, request an Assessment for Community Care Network (CCN) services from your VA Physician. From there, the VA Physician will conduct an assessment and write an order accordingly (based on eligibility and needs). After that step, request that your VA Physician specifies which VA home care provider you would like to use, such as Always Best Care.

  • Thomas H Corey VA Medical Center
  • Fort Worth VA Clinic
  • Lakeland VA Clinic
  • veterans clinic

During this step, a Community Care Coordinator from the VA will contact you after the VA Physician writes your order. After making contact, the Community Care Coordinator will inform you of the type of care and quantity of hours per week authorized by the VA.

If you have not selected a specific provider, the Community Care Coordinator will provide options in your area. Once a Community Provider like Always Best Care is selected, the Community Care Coordinator will send the authorization to the selected Community Provider that you request.

Should you choose Always Best Care as your Community Care Provider, a home care claims manager will call you to arrange a care consultation, complete the intake paperwork, and schedule in-home care services. After the care consultation, the Community Care Provider performs a final assessment of your needs.

After the final assessment is complete, a Care Plan is created for you by the Community Provider. The Community Care Provider will arrange for a caregiver to come to your home for the number of authorized hours allowed each week.

Note: Veterans may choose their in-home care provider and are under NO OBLIGATION TO SELECT Always Best Care.

If you're unsure whether senior care paid for by the VA is right for you, keep reading to learn more about the programs offered.

Veterans Community Care Funding in Lake Worth, FL

As a Veteran, you may be eligible to get care outside the VA. This means the VA will pay for the cost of your care from a health care provider in their community care network. Long-term services offered within this program may include:

  • Help with Daily Tasks: Like meal prep, bathing, getting dressed, taking medicine, and cleaning the house.
  • Comfort and Companionship Care: An in-home caregiver can visit your home if you do not have family or loved ones nearby and help provide companionship services. Those services may include socialization, emotional support, and help staying independent in your home.
  • Support for Caregivers: If you are a caregiver or a Veteran who has a caregiver who needs to take a break for work or personal reasons, don't worry. The VA can provide assistance from a qualified in-home caregiver.

Veterans Aid and Attendance Funding in Lake Worth, FL

VA Aid and Attendance benefits offer additional monthly payments on top of a monthly VA pension for eligible Veterans and their survivors. If you require assistance with everyday tasks or are confined to your home, you might be eligible.

In order to qualify for this program, one or more of the following must be true:

  • You need another person to perform daily routines and activities like making food, dressing yourself, bathing, and going to the bathroom.
  • You are bedridden or spend a significant amount of time in bed due to an illness.
  • Your mental or physical abilities are compromised because of a disability, and you're a patient in a nursing home.
  • You have limited eyesight. This means that even with contact glasses or lenses, you only have 5/200 or less in both eyes. You may also qualify if you have concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less.

Veterans Agent Orange Funding in Lake Worth, FL

Many U.S. Veterans returning from Vietnam began to report health issues almost right away, linking them to exposure to Agent Orange and dioxin. This connection sparked controversy from the outset and persists to this day. Veterans suffering from exposure to Agent Orange may be eligible for in-home care funding from Always Best Care.

One common misconception about this program is that Veterans must have served in Vietnam or were directly exposed to Agent Orange to qualify for funding. The truth is that a soldier DOES NOT need direct exposure to Agent Orange to benefit from quality in-home care.

However, to qualify for this type of funding, the Veteran must have served in the military when the government was using this harmful chemical herbicide. So long as you or your Veteran loved one served in the military during Agent Orange use, they may qualify - even if they did not serve in Vietnam.

The following cancers and illnesses are proven to have been caused by Agent Orange:

  • Hodgkin's Disease
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Respiratory Cancers
  • Bladder Cancer
  • Chronic B-Cell Leukemia
  • Diabetes Type 2
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Peripheral Neuropathy

Whether you served in Vietnam and were exposed to Agent Orange or you are a Veteran who served our country while the herbicide was used, you deserve personalized in-home care from expert caregivers. Unfortunately, securing VA funding for these services can be difficult - especially for older Veterans. That's why many soldiers contact Always Best Care for help.

Our franchise owners are experts when it comes to VA home care claims management in Lake Worth. When you call your local Always Best Care location, you can expect tailored service, expert guidance, and reliable help throughout the qualifying process.

VA Funded Home Care FAQs

The VA provides various programs that deliver both medical and non-medical home care services for eligible Veterans. These initiatives are part of the VA's home and community-based services. They're aimed at enhancing the well-being of Veterans facing chronic illnesses or service-related disabilities.

Non-medical home care encompasses services such as companionship, assistance with household tasks, and personal care. In contrast, home health care services focus on medical needs and include skilled nursing, medication management, and rehabilitative therapies.

The homemaker and home health aide program includes a trained caregiver visiting the Veteran's home to assist with daily household tasks, like grocery shopping or personal care. The frequency of the caregiver's visits can vary based on the Veteran's requirements, whether they need support daily or just occasionally. Veterans can keep receiving help as long as they need assistance with everyday activities. This program enables Veterans to remain in their homes instead of relocating to a nursing facility. It also supports family caregivers by alleviating their stress and physical demands.

The financial support provided by the VA for Veterans' home care can differ significantly depending on the program utilized by the Veteran, their disability status, and various other factors. In the case of spouses or family members of Veterans, the VA's payment for home care will be determined by their eligibility and the specific care requirements they have. Working with a VA home care funding specialist in Lake Worth may help Veterans and their families understand eligibility requirements. Working with an expert may also help to clarify how much the VA will pay for in-home care.

Possibly. Whether a spouse or surviving spouse qualifies depends on their specific circumstances and their ability to fulfill eligibility criteria. For instance, a surviving spouse who enters into a new marriage loses eligibility for TRICARE, which is the military's health insurance program. If a spouse or surviving spouse does not qualify for TRICARE, they might still have access to VA health care benefits through programs like The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA).

True Old Florida beach towns are rare these days, but little Lake Worth Beach has managed to hang in there despite development pressures and the rapidly accelerating pace of South Florida.

Just south of West Palm Beach, this quirky, creative community has colorful historic cottages, coastal nature, a quietly spectacular dining scene, and one of the country’s largest street-painting festivals, all set within the relaxed pace of a bygone era—unsung Florida at its finest.

Explore the History

Lake Worth Beach’s story begins with formerly enslaved African-American pioneers Samuel and Fannie James, known as the “Black Diamonds,” who established the first post office and named their settlement “Jewell” in 1889. There’s a granite monument downtown honoring their legacy.

Lake Worth Beach is also home to one of Florida’s most unique architectural treasures: more than 1,000 colorful historic cottages dating to the early 1900s. It’s the largest concentration of such cottages in the state, outnumbering even Key West; most are Frame Vernacular, Craftsman, or Bungalow cottages built in the 1920s on narrow 25-foot lots. They’re painted in cheery coastal hues, so they make for a fun self-guided walking tour.

Beyond the cottages, architecture lovers will drool over Lake Worth Beach’s concentration of Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, Mission, and Spanish Colonial styles.

Enjoy the Arts

Art is a defining characteristic of the funky little town of Lake Worth Beach.

Every February, the city explodes in color for the annual Street Painting Festival, one of the largest of its kind in the world. During this particularly artsy weekend, more than 600 artists turn the streets of downtown Lake Worth Beach into a temporary open-air museum with larger-than-life chalk murals splayed across Lake and Lucerne Avenues.

There’s also live music, food vendors, and thousands of spectators converging to admire the temporary spectacle, so it’s always a fun time to be in Lake Worth Beach.

But the city’s creative juices flow year-round, not just for the street-painting festival weekend.

For a small town, Lake Worth Beach is jam-packed with studios and galleries (including a working glassblowing studio with classes and workshops); the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County is even headquartered here in a restored 1940 Streamline Modern theater, a hub of rotating exhibitions, film nights, and even an Art Deco lecture series.

While exploring Lake Worth Beach’s quaint downtown, don’t miss The Dancing Elephant, an offbeat indie bookstore with deep roots. It’s one of Florida’s oldest bookstores (formerly the Rainbow Bridge, founded by a Hungarian metaphysicist in 1972), but was revitalized in 2022 by a then-24-year-old and his girlfriend, who took over from the original owner.

One of the few remaining metaphysical bookstores in the country, The Dancing Elephant was reborn by Shane and Ava with an expanded selection of esoteric and antiquarian reads; they even launched their own independent publishing company, Gallowglass Books.

Immerse in Nature and Waterfront Views

Just across the Lake Worth Bridge, the 1,000-foot Lake Worth Beach Pier is where you’ll find spectacular sunrise views, lots of local fishermen, and Benny’s on the Beach, surprisingly one of the only true beach restaurants in South Florida.

Back across the Intracoastal Waterway, the Snook Islands Natural Area provides a serene contrast. This restored estuary has mangroves, oyster reef habitats, a kayak launch, and a boardwalk to stroll for glimpses of native wildlife, including oystercatchers, manatees, and sea turtles. It’s the perfect place to paddle around and experience Florida’s true timelessness.

Where to Eat

The dining scene in Lake Worth Beach is as richly eclectic as the town itself.

Restaurants don’t get much funkier than Jewell Bistro, named for the original settlement. On the menu here, you’ll find seasonal dishes, fresh Florida seafood, and Miss Marsha’s delectably unique desserts, including mango pie, five-spice carrot cake, and Florida Cracker Tarte.

Pelican Restaurant is a longtime local staple, a casual diner with an Indian-fusion twist thanks to the original owners. Try the eggs Nissa, a Pakistani dish of scrambled eggs with ginger, garlic, curry, and naan, or the aloo gobi omelet.

Oceano Kitchen is another Lake Worth Beach must. At this tiny chef-driven coastal American spot, the menu changes weekly, according to what’s freshest; it’s a James Beard Award Semifinalist and widely considered one of the best restaurants in South Florida, but you’d never know it from the laid-back atmosphere and unpretentious husband-and-wife chef-owners.

For an even less fussy, truly local experience, there’s Dave’s Last Resort, one of South Florida’s favorite dive bars, where the seafood’s always fresh and the game’s always on.

Whether you come for the art, architecture, nature, food, or street painting festival, Lake Worth Beach is one of Florida’s last old-school beach towns, a true gem of the Sunshine State.

LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. — Community advocates in Lake Worth Beach say a coordinated law enforcement operation earlier this week left families frightened and scrambling — and raised new concerns about how immigration enforcement is unfolding in local neighborhoods.

Residents and local organizations tell WPTV they spent hours recording and tracking what they describe as a "city-wide raid," involving several agencies, including Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Florida Highway Patrol.

Inside the Guatemalan Maya Center, Christmas presents typically meant to bring joy to local families now sit untouched. Staff say instead of focusing on holiday support, they have shifted to helping families stay together.

"Border Patrol, HSI and other law enforcement agencies… they began detaining people early in the morning — mainly traffic stops… landscaping, construction… we saw it across the city," said Mariana Blanco, the center's director of operations.

Blanco says she and members of the advocacy group P.E.A.C.E. mobilized quickly as videos circulated showing workers running from a construction site and a mix of marked and unmarked law enforcement vehicles in different areas of the city.

"Once we began kind of yelling at them, they just left… it lasted no more than 10 minutes," Blanco said, describing one of the encounters.

She says recording these interactions became a priority as confusion and fear spread. At one point, Blanco says a mother was separated from her 3-month-old baby.

"The 3-month-old baby was taken from her arms and she was taken," Blanco said.

For Blanco and others, documenting what happens on the ground is essential.

"Time and time again… we have witnessed one event — and their narrative is completely different," she said.

Blanco believes the presence of cameras and large crowds influenced how agents responded.

"I certainly think officers were trying to intimidate us… betting on the idea we wouldn't know our rights and listen to their directives."

What happened Monday has prompted new organizing efforts. Paige Shortsleeves with P.E.A.C.E. says she called an emergency meeting shortly after the incident.

"It was 115 people on a call," she said, adding that most of the attendees expressed interest in becoming legal observers.

"There's training on how to observe and document arrests, rallies, protests — anything involving law enforcement and folks."

Faith leaders have also stepped in. A prayer vigil is being planned outside the Florida Highway Patrol office in Lantana on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 10:30 a.m.

"We're responding to pain and fear and anger in our community," said Reverend Corinna Olsen.

In the meantime, staff at the Guatemalan Maya Center and leaders with P.E.A.C.E. say they are helping families prepare for potential separations, ensuring documents are organized and that children are not left in vulnerable positions if a parent is detained.

LAKE WORTH BEACH, FL — Locals Only Neighborhood Bar is preparing to open in early January at 1230 N Dixie Hwy, Lake Worth Beach, FL 33460, owner Eric Sessions told Business Debut.

The new opening expands his existing Locals Only presence in downtown West Palm Beach. The management team includes Michael Hadidis and Christian Meneses at the helm.

What to Expect

The concept centers on a neighborhood-style sports bar featuring TVs throughout the space, pool tables, pub poker nights, trivia, and a rotating specialty cocktail menu designed with the help of Sessions’ flair bartenders from another venue.

The interior includes a large bar with seating for roughly 20 guests, several plush booths, high-top tables, whiskey-barrel-style seating, and room for small music events or private gatherings. A jukebox and full sound system add to the entertainment setup.

While the bar does not have a full kitchen, it will serve simple bar bites such as hot dogs and nachos. The team also plans to host rotating food trucks (especially on weekends and game days) including well-known operators such as Tacos Al Parbon and McCrae’s Barbecue.

Sessions said the goal is to create “a friendly neighborhood bar, sports themed… something new and fresh” for Lake Worth Beach, built around affordability and approachability for the local community.

“We’re going to try to have a little mix of everything, just make it a fun atmosphere where people can come in and have an affordable cocktail and a good experience,” he told Business Debut.

Expansion Plans

Sessions also confirmed he is developing a second concept, Whiskey Tango Bar & Grill, a full-service restaurant and bar opening in West Palm Beach, FL, targeting 2026. The project is in early build-out and will feature a full kitchen and larger footprint.

Locals Only Neighborhood Bar is targeting an early January debut.

Hours

The bar plans to operate seven days a week, typically 11 a.m. — 2 a.m., with adjustments made based on demand and event schedules.

For some, Florida is the only home they’ve ever known.

The small figures huddled together at Miami International Airport carried backpacks, stuffed animals and three suitcases. One wore a silver cross necklace.

Families of the seven travelers – ages 3 to 15 – have been torn apart this year by the Trump Administration’s deportation campaign. The children left the United States on Thursday for a new life in the mountains of Guatemala. For some, Florida is the only home they’ve ever known.

Three of the children are U.S. citizens; the other four grew up in Lake Worth Beach, Palm Beach County, long home to a large Guatemalan community.

They are among 58 children that the Guatemala-Maya Center, a local social service agency, has helped reunite with their parents in Guatemala this year. Staff said that they have organized power-of-attorney documents for 200 other children, whose parents are worried about what will happen if they are detained.

“Separating a child from their parents is not a lesson for anyone, there are no winners in doing it,” said Diego Serrato, who accompanied the kids to Guatemala City with his wife, a University of Miami employee. “The only losers are the children.”

The couple volunteered to chaperone the children on their flight – because they have two young daughters of their own.

As President Donald Trump carries out a mass deportation campaign, families have been caught in the middle, and parents facing detention or deportation are making difficult decisions about how best to care for their children, many of whom are U.S. citizens.

Asked how Homeland Security is protecting children when their parents are detained or deported, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told the Herald in an emailed statement that “ICE does not separate families.”

“Parents are asked if they want to be removed with their children or ICE will place the children with a safe person the parent designates. This is consistent with past administration’s immigration enforcement,” McLaughlin said. “Parents who are here illegally can take control of their family’s departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $1,000 and a free flight to self-deport now.”

“We encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live American dream [sic]. If not, you will be arrested and deported without a chance to return,” she said.

In Lake Worth Beach, arrests have been non-stop.

Christopher McVoy, city commissioner for District 2 of Lake Worth Beach, said he has yet to see evidence that officers are arresting violent criminals or gang members. Florida Highway Patrol did not have much of a presence in Lake Worth before this year – but now he sees them regularly parked on the street.

And the deportations are leaving families and children without breadwinners, he said, or the funds to cover their bills.

“A large part of our population is at risk, and living in fear,” McVoy said. “Hoping for the best, but afraid. And it’s hard not to be, once you become aware of how often these raids are happening.”

At the American Airlines check-in desk, the children were waiting at 10am, as their chaperones gathered their boarding passes, identification and passports. Each of their flights had cost between $370 and $560, which the Guatemala-Maya Center paid through fundraising.

When they reached security for Terminal D, Mariana Blanco, the director of operations at the center, pulled the children together in a circle. She told them to charge their phones; the oldest to hold the hands of the toddlers; and to say goodbye to their relatives.

The children walked hand-in-hand, following Serrato and his wife, Luisa Gutiérrez.

“It’s a sad, cruel moment,” Blanco said, crying as she watched them leave. “Especially for the children who have to decide between going with one parent, and leaving the other behind.”

Blanco said that five children had one or both parents deported; one child’s father is still detained; and one girl’s father chose to send her, for fear he too would be detained.

Andres Osvaldo picked up his nephew, 6-year-old Andy, when Florida Highway Patrol detained his father driving home from school. At the airport on Thursday, Osvaldo pulled Andy into a hug before he left. The Herald is identifying the children by first name only because they are minors.

Enrique’s father is in a detention center in Louisiana, after officers arrested him on his way to work. Enrique, 13, is returning to his mother in Guatemala, who he hasn’t seen since he was 4.

In manila folders, Blanco held the children’s documents and notes about what happened to their parents.

Franklin, 3, and Garibaldi, 6, are the only siblings. Both born in Florida, they held hands and wore matching backpacks that were nearly as big as them. Franklin carried a stuffed animal wearing a Santa hat and himself wore a Spider-Man shirt.

Their father was deported, Blanco said. Their mother works six days a week, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., at a local nursery. Unable to care for them alone, and afraid of being detained herself, she chose to send the children to their father.

Alexis, 11, has been staying with a family friend after his father and step-mother were both deported a couple weeks ago, Blanco said. His mother lives in Guatemala and he hasn’t seen her in eight years. At the airport he wore a stuffed monkey he got at Target wrapped around his neck.

The oldest of the group, Areimy, is 15. Her father was deported and her mother is in Guatemala.

Her cousin, Mariela, 11, traveled with her. Mariela’s father was taking care of both girls, but chose to send them to Guatemala, afraid he could soon be detained.

Blanco said the children had mixed feelings – most were excited to see their parents again, others were sad to leave behind a parent, others were just confused about why they were leaving.

When they arrived in Guatemala City around 2:40pm local time, family members were waiting outside with balloons, running to hug the children in tears. Serrato shared videos of the reunion with the Herald.

“So sad for the situation,” Serrato texted the Herald, adding that the children had all been reunited with relatives. “But it’s a new beginning with their families.”
