HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The community has once again shown that it supports its teachers like no other through the 2025 Share Your School Supplies Drive, benefiting the Houston Food Bank's School Programs.
It's not too late to pitch in. You can fulfill the food bank's Amazon wish list here, text "SYSS2025" to 71777, or give online.
So far, together we've raised $42,862.13 in cash and school supply donations in Houston, Galveston, Richmond/Rosenberg, Spring and Sugar Land. Not to mention, some locations filled two school buses worth of supplies.
Volunteers with the Ismaili Jamatkhana in Beaumont also chipped in, putting together a truck of supplies.
Once again, everything stays local for teachers in our region.
Now in its second year, the 2025 drive, sponsored by Amazon and Terry Bryant, featured Eyewitness News anchors and reporters going live across southeast Texas from multiple school supply collection sites Friday morning.
In 2024, we united as a community to raise nearly $30,000 in cash and individual school supply donations.
The drive comes at a critical time. The food bank said it's facing $11 million in cuts in federal funding, also telling ABC13 the loss significantly impacts how it can help those in need.
The food bank said that, on average, teachers spent $800 - $1,000 of their own money on school supplies in Fiscal Year '24.

The drive benefits the Houston Food Bank's School Programs, which provide resources for teachers in low-income schools.
According to the food bank, teachers are eligible to receive help if they're in urban schools in which 90% of students are on free or reduced-price lunch or teachers in rural schools in which 70% of students are on free or reduced-price lunch and who participate in Houston Food Bank's Backpack Buddy Program or School Market Program.
According to the National Education Association, the largest teacher's union, over 90% of teachers spend their own money on school supplies.
In 2023, educators in Texas spent nearly $300 million of their own money for pencils, folders, notebook paper and other tools their students need to succeed.
Some families are also struggling to provide school supplies for their children. The Kids in Need Foundation's 2023-2024 Impact Report found that 62% of students arrive without the necessary supplies on their first day; 62% of students did not have access to necessary supplies at home and 69% of students did not have second semester replacement supplies.
A 2022 CNN Business report further breaks down the sharp increase in supply costs:
Meanwhile, Adopt A Classroom's Spring 2025 survey found that teacher spending out of pocket is still high at $895 during the 2024-2025 school year. Teacher out-of-pocket spending has also increased 49% since 2015.
Twenty percent of teachers also reported working a second job -- a number up 25% since 2023.
When it comes to supplies that were needed the most, 82% of teachers listed the essentials: paper, pencils, and markers.
The report found that Texas teachers were among those spending the most, $935. Per the report, Kentucky teachers spent the most out-of-pocket at $1,328.
Simply put, compassionate teachers want their students to thrive and have a more productive, efficient learning experience.
Teachers reported to the Kids in Need Foundation that when students had the right supplies, students' ideas flourished, their confidence grew, and their genuine interest in learning began to develop. At least one teacher reported that being able to provide materials for her students put all the kids on equal ground. Bullying was also reduced as students could focus on the work at hand.
While the reassurance for students is necessary, teachers need to feel the support.
Forty-five percent of Kids in Need Foundation survey respondents nationally said they considered leaving teaching as a profession in 2023 as a result of feeling under-resourced and under-supported.

The Houston Texans saw one of their top defensive backs in C.J. Gardner-Johnson go down with a serious leg injury during Thursday's training camp scrimmage, ultimately leading to the veteran safety being carted off the field, and putting his status for the season ahead in a bit of limbo.
It's never easy to see any player go down with such an injury, especially during a training camp practice, before Gardner-Johnson's even seen a snap in preseason. The 27-year-old was traded to Houston earlier this offseason from the Philadelphia Eagles, sitting days away from the Texans' preseason debut.
Following Thursday's practice, head coach DeMeco Ryans spoke about Gardner-Johnson's injury, calling the events "heartbreaking" to watch unfold.
“It’s heartbreaking when you see a guy go down on the field like that and doesn't get up quickly. I'm always nervous as a head coach any time I see somebody hit the ground. It's tough to watch. We’ll see, we'll evaluate where he is, but no update at this time."
After Gardner-Johnson was down and in pain, the field went silent, and players surrounded one another in prayer for a few moments– a meaningful message from the Texans, and one that Ryans noted as a truly heartfelt one.
"It's heartfelt because we're a team," Ryans said. "We're all in this together, and you see the emotion from our team. I've been on teams where you just, 'Hey, coaches, just move the ball up, and keep practicing.' I think that's very insensitive. So, we're going to take the time there, guys take a knee, pray for him, just make sure they send their teammate off well."
"That's what it's about. It's about that moment, for me, to make sure we care for each other. It's not just some slogans that we throw up or just toss around. Like, we truly care about each other. So that's why you see, if something like that happens in practice, we're going to take our time, then we have to hit reset– it's a tough message– but we have to hit reset, and then we have to get back going."
It remains to be seen what the status on Gardner-Johnson's health holds while awaiting results on his MRI, but it appears more than likely the veteran will be set to miss some time.

Houston will need Woody Marks, Jawhar Jordan, and Nick Chubb to all step in Mixon's absence. The Texans took Marks in the fourth round of the NFL Draft after an impressive season at USC. In his senior season, Marks rushed for 1,133 yards and nine touchdowns while catching 47 passes for 321 yards.
The other young back Houston may utilize is Jawhar Jordan, Houston's sixth-round pick in 2024. Jordan will need to continue to impress in practice to get in the rotation over Marks and Chubb.
Chubb is presumed to take a majority of the workload if Mixon is out in Week 1. The four-time Pro Bowler was one of the best running backs in the league just a few years ago, but injuries have set him back. In the 2024 season, Chubb rushed for 332 yards and three touchdowns across eight games.
The Texans have some talent in the running back room, but they will need their depth to step up if Mixon is unable to give it a go early in the season.

The operator of more than a dozen Panera Bread locations across the Houston area is in legal and financial hot water, facing a federal lawsuit from Panera Bread, and filing for bankruptcy protection.
What we know:
EYM Café of Texas LLC, a franchisee of Panera, operated 15 stores in the Houston area. Chad Rainey was an assistant general manager at one of them. He says he moved locations for a promotion in the company and shortly after, on his birthday, he was told the store was closing and he no longer had a job.
"There's 15 stores with 40 to 60 employees per store - we're all out," he said.
Rainey says his last paycheck is supposed to hit Friday, but EYM Cafe hasn't responded to any inquiries from employees on how to collect that payment.
"I'll be on the street. I have no vehicle - no nothing. Me and my wife will be on the street," he said.

Records show EYM Café began operating the 15 locations in 2019 and in May 2025, Panera Bread filed a lawsuit against the franchisee, accusing them of repeatedly breaching its franchise agreements by failing to make required payments, maintain food safety standards, and pay vendors and landlords.
The suit says Panera Bread terminated franchise rights at multiple Houston-area locations earlier this year, but claims the franchisee continued to operate the locations illegally.
"It honestly came as a shock and out of nowhere," said Ricky Baskin, a former manager.
According to court filings, Panera alleges that EYM’s payment issues began surfacing in February 2025. It says inspections by Panera reportedly uncovered "multiple food safety issues" and violations of brand standards at multiple cafés. Notices of default and termination were sent for at least 10 stores between March and May, the suit says.
Records show EYM Café of Texas LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on August 2, 2025. The records say the operator of the LLC is Eduardo Diaz. According to bankruptcy records, the company reports owing between $10 million and $50 million to hundreds of creditors.

As we near the beginning of the 2025 NFL season, the expectations surrounding the Houston Texans continue to grow heading into week one. And while the defense is coming off a remarkable 2024 campaign, the organization is looking for a change on the offensive side of the ball.
When asked about how the offense has looked throughout training camp, quarterback CJ Stroud told reporters on Wednesday that "everything is starting to come a lot easier."
“Everything is starting to come a lot easier, we’re starting to make more plays, know what guys are good at in the scheme and try to fit the guys to do those types of things.” Stroud said. "It's not overnight and our defense has been together for three years almost with a lot of the same guys. They're making calls and checks quicker sometimes than [the offense] can and vise-versa. I think we are the best defense in the league, so it's been hard, but also very great for us to get a good challenge everyday."
While Houston's defense has been prolific under head coach DeMeco Ryans, the offensive side of the ball has gone through its fair share of woes. Stroud put the league on notice after an incredible rookie season in 2023, as he threw for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns. However, despite the addition of star running back Joe Mixon last offseason, the young quarterback took a step back in production in his second season. This eventually led to former offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik being terminated, with Nick Caley taking over the play-calling duties for the 2025 season.
As the former passing games coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, Caley brings an ample amount of experience under Rams' head coach Sean McVay. The 42-year-old coach led quarterback Matthew Stafford to a productive 2024 season, as the highly-regarded veteran finished with 3,762 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. McVay's coaching tree is becoming a popular hotspot for up-and-coming offensive playcallers, with newly-hired Jacksonville Jaguars' head coach Liam Coen being the latest example.
If Caley stays true to the typical McVay game plan, the Texans could see a strong uptick in offensive production this season. Stroud's ability to make any throw and his high IQ will allow for him to be successful under Caley, who utilized a heavy dose of pre-snap motion last season. In addition to Stroud being set up for success, star wide receiver Nico Collins will once again play an important role in Houston's offensive attack this season. The former 2021 third-round pick out of Michigan has proven to be a top receiver in the NFL, which gives Caley a true wide receiver one that can line up anywhere on the field.
The main question surrounding the Texans' offense this season will be the offensive line unit, which saw their best player, Lamery Tunsil, be traded away to the Washington Commanders earlier this offseason. Caley must find a way to get the best out of his front five this season in order for Houston's offense to have a bounce-back season.
