Created by AdVenture Development, LLC, the “Live-Work-Play” development will residentially contain 211 single-family homes, a senior living community, and , a 348-unit multifamily community currently under construction. Commercial projects include a 500,000-square-foot shopping center, anchored by a new 129,000-square-foot Target, The News & Observer previously reported.
The “work” portion of the development is anchored by the Eastfield Business Park Building 100, home to a microwaveable rice meal kit company and the Triangle East Collaborative Center, a former JR’s Retail Outlet that now houses a number of other small and mid-sized businesses.
“This Eastfield location employs 30 people, offering competitive pay and benefits packages to all employees,” Byron McAllister, Selma’s mayor, said in a press release. “Selma is proud to welcome the exemplary family-owned and family-grown success of the SHEETZ family.” Sheetz currently operates more than 830 locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. The family-owned and operated business was founded in 1952 by Bob Sheetz in Pennsylvania.
The Eastfield development has been in the works since 2019, said AdVenture Developments President Kevin Dougherty.
This is not the first major convenience store to pop up in local cities. In June, The News & Observer reported that Buc-ee’s broke ground on its first travel center in North Carolina.
In May, The N&O reported that gas stations across Wake, Durham, Orange and Chatham counties were flagged for problems at the pump by inspectors with the Standards Division of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

SELMA — Sheetz has opened a new location at Eastfield, marking the occasion with a community celebration and $5,000 in charitable donations. The new store is located at I-95 Exit 97, at the intersection of I-95 and U.S. 70 Business.
AdVenture Development announced the opening.
“We are delighted to welcome Sheetz to Eastfield in Selma, N.C.,” said AdVenture Development President Kevin Dougherty.
As part of the opening, Sheetz presented two $2,500 checks. One donation went to Special Olympics, which serves 60,000 athletes nationwide, including 60 athletes in Johnston County.
Sheetz also partners with Special Olympics to allow customers to contribute through spare-change donations, roundups or donations added to purchases. The company will match customer donations up to $60,000 to support year-round sports training and competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
The second $2,500 donation went to Sheetz’s local food-security partners, Coneto Family Life Center in Coneto and Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. Inter-Faith Food Shuttle partners with local agencies and schools to provide groceries and fresh produce to communities in need.
Selma Mayor Byron McAllister welcomed Sheetz to the community.

Founded by Bob Sheetz in 1952 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the business remains family-owned and operated. Travis Sheetz, the company’s president and CEO, said employees are central to the company’s identity.
“Our people are our brand,” Sheetz said. “They are the face of Sheetz in every community we serve, and it’s our responsibility to provide them with fulfilling careers built on respect and a shared purpose of caring for others.”
Eastfield store manager Bailie Hendricks echoed that focus on serving the community and customers.
“We’re here 365 days a year,” Hendricks said. “One of my favorite holiday traditions is visiting with the many customers who come to Sheetz to see us on Christmas Day.”
Hendricks and her management team participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new store.
The Eastfield Sheetz offers made-to-order food and beverages, mobile pickup lanes, indoor and outdoor seating, grocery items, touch-free restrooms, free Wi-Fi and air service. The store operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Sheetz menu includes breakfast served all day, subs, sandwiches, pizza, chicken, salads, cold brew, milkshakes and smoothies, along with customized specialty drinks and other made-to-order items.
Sheetz operates more than 830 locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina.

The Selma location will be owned and operated by Cody Findlay, whose path to restaurant ownership began more than a decade ago as an entry-level employee.
Findlay joined Culver’s at age 19 while living in Wisconsin and has spent the past 11 years working his way through the company’s management ranks. Along the way, he participated in Culver’s mentorship program, where experienced franchise owners help train future restaurant operators.
“Eleven years ago, I started at Culver’s as a team member,” Findlay said. “With the mentorship provided by the company, I’ve been able to develop my skills in the restaurant business to turn Culver’s into a fulfilling career, and I’m thrilled to be in a position to operate the Selma restaurant.”
Findlay and his wife, Shellbee, said they are looking forward to becoming part of the Johnston County community while creating opportunities for local employees.
“We’re excited to open and begin welcoming guests through our doors with the warm hospitality Culver’s is known for,” Findlay said. “When Selma residents are looking for handcrafted meals cooked to order and tasty frozen treats, we’ll be ready to serve them.”
Culver’s signature ButterBurger is prepared with fresh, never-frozen beef and served on a lightly buttered, toasted bun. The restaurant is also known for its Fresh Frozen Custard, which is made in small batches throughout the day and can be customized with dozens of toppings and mix-ins.
The menu also includes chicken sandwiches, fresh salads, crinkle-cut fries, Wisconsin cheese curds and children’s meals.
