Drivers who filled up at a Holly Springs gas station late last month may want to pay close attention to how their vehicle is running.
The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services confirmed to WRAL News that it found contaminated fuel at the Valero station in Holly Springs, located at 601 N Main St., after the department received two customer complaints.

WRAL first learned about the issue through its ReportIt tip line at wral.com/report-it/, and after a local auto repair shop posted on social media that it had received a vehicle towed in after filling up at a Holly Springs gas station on July 29. The shop said the vehicle was running poorly and technicians found the fuel tank was approximately 90% water.
According to the department, an inspector visited the station on Monday, Aug. 3, and found two inches of phase separation in the premium gasoline storage tank. Inspectors also found “phase separation” coming through the premium fuel pump, meaning there was water in the fuel.
Phase separation occurs when ethanol-blended gasoline is exposed to a high concentration of water. The water and ethanol separate from the gasoline, creating a caustic mixture that can damage vehicle fuel systems and engines. Speaking off camera to WRAL 5 On Your Side, a person who identified himself as a manager of the gas station blamed recent heavy rain from the area. WRAL News has asked the state to verify that.
The Department of Agriculture issued the station a Notice of Violation and ordered sales of the premium and plus gasoline to stop until the issue is corrected.
State officials said the station's plus-grade gasoline was also affected because it is blended using premium and regular gasoline. Because the station's mid-grade, or "plus," gasoline is created by blending premium and regular fuel at the pump, the contaminated premium fuel also affected the plus-grade gasoline. As a result, the state ordered sales of both premium and plus gasoline to stop.
WRAL has reached out to Valero for comment and asked what caused the contamination, whether additional customers may have been affected and what drivers should do if they believe they purchased contaminated fuel. Valero did not immediately respond to WRAL’s request for comment.

Holly Springs, NC, Aug. 23, 2026 — The watering schedule Holly Springs residents have followed since early July is over.
The Town lifted its Stage 1 water restrictions Aug. 21st after recent rainfall improved conditions. The decision, made following guidance from Harnett Regional Water, means residents and businesses can return to normal water use.
Holly Springs put the restrictions in place July 6th as drought conditions worsened across the Triangle. For residents using the Town’s drinking water for lawn irrigation, that meant watering only on certain days and during limited hours.
Even-numbered addresses were assigned Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, while odd-numbered addresses could water Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Fridays were off limits. Reclaimed water, hand watering and drip irrigation were not covered by those restrictions.
None of those limits apply now.
Holly Springs is back at Stage 0, the normal conservation level under the Town’s Water Shortage Response Plan. Stage 0 asks residents to conserve water but doesn’t impose a mandatory watering schedule.
The Town credited residents with helping keep water use down during the nearly seven weeks the restrictions were in place.
“Residents’ efforts during Stage 1 restrictions helped lower water use and protect the water supply,” the Town said. “Simple actions, like limiting unnecessary outdoor water use and being mindful of daily water habits, continue to make a difference.”
That doesn’t mean the Town is asking residents to stop paying attention to water use. Among its recommendations are fixing leaking faucets and toilets, waiting for full loads before running dishwashers or washing machines and watering lawns early in the morning or later in the evening, when less water is lost to evaporation.
Residents can also monitor their water use and check for possible leaks through the Town’s online water-tracking portal.
If drought conditions return and another Stage 1 alert is needed, Holly Springs says residents will be notified.

Holly Springs, NC, August 22, 2026 — A proposed rezoning that would bring 53 new homes and a small commercial center to Avent Ferry Road is on hold after the Holly Springs Town Council voted unanimously to defer action on Tuesday (8/18/26).
The rezoning request (document) covers about 32 acres at 2420 Avent Ferry Road and would change the property from Rural Residential to conditional Suburban Residential and Neighborhood Mixed-Use. The proposal would allow the construction of 53 single-family homes and a commercial building ranging from 5,000 to 16,000 square feet on the property.
The proposed commercial building would have no direct entrance from Avent Ferry Road. Drivers would reach it through internal driveways connected to the subdivision, an arrangement council members questioned during their discussion with the applicant’s traffic engineer.
The full development is projected to generate about 1,400 vehicle trips per day, with about 900 coming from the commercial portion. Council members also asked for more separation and buffering between the commercial building and the homes backing up to it.
Council members also questioned the proposed crosswalk across Avent Ferry Road, asking the applicant to work with the N.C. Department of Transportation on the crossing rather than leave it as a conceptual part of the plan. They pointed to a nearby intersection they said is already unsafe for children walking between neighborhoods.
The applicant was also asked to narrow the potential uses of the commercial property. Several asked for language limiting the site to neighborhood retail, such as a small grocery or convenience store. An attorney representing the family behind the project agreed to revise the conditions.
“There is no desire for it to be a mattress firm. There is no desire for it to be a Dollar General or something along those lines,” the attorney told the council.
Submitted application materials have described the intended use as a small specialty or international grocer, and one of the property owners told the council he wants to keep the commercial space in the family long-term.
The project also calls for about 1,400 feet of widening along the Avent Ferry Road frontage, a new three-lane extension of Buckhorn Duncan Road through the property and a 10-foot multi-use path along both roads.
With the rezoning deferred, council did not take up the related development agreement or water and sewer allocation request. No date has been set for the project to return to the Town Council.
