They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Houston, TX?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Mastro's Steakhouse or visit Sam Houston Park, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Houston, TX, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your TX's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Houston, TX

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Houston, TX understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

 Respite Care Houston, TX

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Houston, TX

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • The Village of River Oaks
  • The Shores at Clear Lake
  • Senior Living Specialists Houston
  • Clearwater at The Heights
  • Cypress Assisted Living CyFair
  • Belmont Village Senior Living West University

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. We got the win, and we displayed a lot of things that need improvement. These games can be difficult. A lot of times, human nature can get the better of you. The full-strength Houston Rockets got off to a good start with five points to start the game. Amen Thompson was aggressive attacking the basket for six quick points. Kevin Durant had a pair of turn-around jumpers to start the game for the home team.

Jayson Tatum was looking to get others involved; fresh off his Eastern Conference player of the week award, he had 2 assists at the six-minute mark. Baylor Scheierman had five points to start the game before he took a seat on the bench.

Mitchell Robinson, Sam Hauser and Payton Pritchard were first off the bench for Boston. Robinson would go to the locker room late in the first quarter with a thumb sprain after only playing a few minutes. Tari Eason hit 2 threes off the bench for Houston as they took an early ten-point lead and looked in control.

Boston missed 32 of 44 3-pointers in Orlando last night, and they continued to struggle shooting the ball to start the game with just 1-9 from downtown. Luka Garza got into the game and had a big impact on the scoreboard, hitting two straight triples in just three minutes of play. Boston had tied the game after a quarter of play, 29-29.

Mike Conley started the second quarter in his second game of the year for his new team; he hit a three-pointer before going back to the bench in a very short stint of play.

The Houston Rockets outscored the Celtics by seven points in the second quarter as Jayson Tatum got a rest after playing the first 12 minutes of the game. Alperen Sengun paced the Rockets with twelve points in the half on 6 of 8 shooting from the field, doing most of his damage in the paint.

Luka Garza hit his third 3-pointer of the game from the corner on a wide open attempt, he had 9 points at the half in just eight minutes of play. Mitchell Robinson returned to the court halfway through the second quarter with a strapped hand. The big man peeled off a screen to dunk home a two-hander off a beautiful Jayson Tatum lob pass.

Payton Pritchard was scoreless for 14 minutes of the game before he finally scored from the foul line. The Celtics had 6 turnovers at the half; shooting just 42% from the field and going just 7 of 22 from three. Jayson Tatum led the C's with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, all 11 players had scored for Boston at the half.

The Boston Celtics started the second half with a pair of big men, Neemias Queta and Mitchell Robinson against the taller Rockets squad. The lineup switch paid off, as Neemias Queta was rolling for Boston with 7 straight points; he hit a rare corner triple and got a pair of tip-ins to start the quarter.

Jayson Tatum and Mitchell Robinson connected on a second thunderous lob of the night as Boston cut Houston's lead back to one point. Hugo Gonzalez had a breakaway layup attempt blocked by Alperen Sengun on the chase down. Jabari Smith Jr. went down the other end and drilled a three-pointer as Houston went up by 7 points.

Payton Pritchard had a chance to cut Houston's lead to 2 points, but he missed a wide-open three-pointer. The shooting woes continued for Boston; Derrick White, Sam Hauser and Pritchard were a combined 0-11 from three after 3 quarters of play. Houston took a 9-point lead into the fourth quarter, 73-82 at the end of three.

Marcus Smart flopped on two straight plays to start the fourth quarter, Payton Pritchard converted on just 1 of 2 free throws. Marcus Smart hit a pair of triples, Reed Shepard hit his first points of the game as Joe Mazzulla called a timeout to discuss things, Houston were up 93-79.

Derrick White finally connected on his first 3-pointer of the night, after 26 minutes of game time. Boston ran of legs in this one, Houston's swarming defenders taking their toll on the second night of a back-to-back. Chris Cenac Jr. and Dillon Mitchell got into the game for the final two minutes as Joe Mazzulla waved the white flag in H-Town.

Boston have a day off before next hosting the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday at 7:30 pm EST at TD Garden.

Eric Leonard Mattson, Jr. 11/04/1951 - 01/16/2026Eric would be turning 75 this week. Though his passing in January brought his life to an end, he leaves behind a legacy of integrity, authenticity, and love. Eric grew up in Pittsburgh, along with his sister, Karen. He attended Penn State for both undergraduate and graduate degrees and began his career in Pittsburgh in commercial banking. He then ventured into the oil and gas business with a move to California in 1980. It was there he would meet his wife, Wendy, and begin a life with her and her two children, Bryce and Evan Fraser. His career brought them to Houston in 1987. Eric and Wendy had two more children, Trey and Emma, and found tremendous joy in watching their family grow. Bryce and his wife, Sarah, live in Rye, New York, with their three boys, Everett, Griffin, and Cole. Evan lives in Seattle and visits Houston regularly. Trey and his wife, Kelly, live in Houston with their two children, Wells and Remy. Emma and her husband, Dylan Durham, also live in Houston with their two-year-old son, Davis. Nothing made Eric happier than time spent with the family he loved so dearly.Eric passed on his love of golf to his children, but the lessons he taught on the course went far beyond the game. He was a patient teacher, a thoughtful listener and a steady source of perspective and resilience. He also passed on his loyalty to Penn State. One fall football weekend in State College was all it took to make Nittany Lions out of the boys, and Saturdays centered around attending or watching college football games. When Emma and Dylan attended The University of Texas, Eric graciously made room for the Longhorns, at least when they were not playing Penn State! As a family, they found their hearts were drawn to the mountains and trees of western North Carolina. Their home in Asheville became a cherished retreat filled with golf, Thanksgiving gatherings, and unhurried time together. A beloved spot for all the family, there was no greater delight than time "on the porch."Eric took pride in his work and accomplished much professionally. But he would have wanted to be remembered first and foremost as a devoted husband, father and Pops. Eric was a mentor to so many, an advisor, a patient listener, and an even more patient teacher. Family dinners were never just about the meal, though his chicken piccata was legendary. Around the table, stories were told, opinions exchanged, advice offered, and memories made. His warmth, his quiet wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor made the gatherings memorable. Being Pops brought Eric a particular kind of joy. He delighted in time with his grandchildren, whether sharing his love of golf, strumming a little James Taylor on his guitar, or simply enjoying their company. He treasured the opportunity to watch his family grow and took great pride in the lives they were building. These moments captured so much of who Eric was: generous with his time, devoted to his family, and fully present with the people he loved. He is missed beyond words. He lived a life of honesty, dignity and kindness, always caring for those he loved and wearing his perpetual smile. We so wish we were celebrating your birthday with you, Eric, Dad, Pops…we love you.

Hey there!

I hope everyone had a fun Halloween weekend! I had a great time handing out candy, and loved seeing so many families out enjoying the neighborhood. And the costumes! You all did not disappoint. ????

If you snapped any photos of your little ones, pets or favorite Halloween decorations around the Heights, send them my way. I’d love to share some of your photos!

Share your thoughts in the comments.

Here’s what’s happening around the neighborhood this week.

There’s a lot to look forward to at Donovan Park!

Plans for the park’s next phase of renovations were shared over the weekend during the Donovan Park Halloween Party, which organizers say drew a great turnout and positive feedback from the community.

The proposed improvements include two playgrounds designed for different age groups: one for children ages 2 to 5 and another for ages 5 to 12.

Other features in the plans include:

But there’s an important distinction: This is phase two, and the park still needs to raise the money to build it.

Donovan Park is privately owned and managed by the Houston Heights Association. The estimated construction cost is approximately $2 million.

Organizers say they have raised about $150,000 so far. That funding helped cover phase one, including the creation of the park’s master plan, which cost about $60,000. The remaining funds are being saved toward the construction goal.

The association says sponsorship opportunities will be announced soon.

So, while the plans are exciting, there is still a significant fundraising effort ahead before construction can begin.

If you didn’t early vote, Election Day is tomorrow, Tuesday, November 3. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Where to vote:

You are not limited to one assigned polling place. You can vote at any open Harris County Voting Center on Election Day.

That said, there are several around the Greater Heights.

Some include:

More locations can be found, here.

What should you bring?

Texas voters should bring an acceptable form of photo ID. That includes:

You can also bring a printed sample ballot or notes to help you remember your choices.

One more thing: Your ballot depends on your home address. Two people who both consider themselves Heights residents may have different local races.

I put together a full voting guide with information about what’s on the ballot, voter ID requirements and how to find your sample ballot.

This is something I hear from Heights residents all the time: What happened to that road project? Why did construction stop? Is it still happening? And when will it finally be finished?

Last week, Houston City Council adopted a measure intended to give council members more information when certain city construction projects are delayed, canceled or significantly changed.

The measure addresses proposed changes to certain infrastructure projects, including work involving streets, sidewalks, bike lanes, drainage, bridges, trails and parks.

In simple terms, it’s intended to help council members keep track of significant changes to city projects, including work that may be delayed or no longer moving forward.

I’ll be watching for how this affects projects in and around the Heights.

If you’ve driven by Lawrence Park lately, you’ve probably noticed a pretty major transformation underway. And by transformation, I mean there’s dirt EVERYWHERE.

The park is in the middle of a major renovation following a September groundbreaking. So if you’ve passed by and wondered what in the world is happening, don’t be alarmed. This is what construction looks like!

The project includes two new shaded playgrounds, improved walking paths and park surfaces, new connections to the MKT Trail, a fitness area and improvements to the baseball field bleachers.

The improvements are intended to make the park more accessible and create better connections for people walking, biking and using the trail.

Construction is on schedule to be complete in up to a year (summer 2027!!)

So, yes, it’s a little messy right now. But there’s a lot planned for this park!

A historic property in the Heights has a new chapter. The Victorian on Heights has opened as a venue for weddings and private events, bringing a new gathering space to the neighborhood.

As the venue gets started, One of you messaged me wanting to learn more about what neighbors can expect, particularly when it comes to parking, event sizes and noise.

I spoke with owner April Dardis, who says she and her husband live directly across the street. Here’s what she shared about how they plan to manage events:

It’s always interesting to see a historic Heights property take on a new life. As the venue gets established, I’ll be keeping an eye on how it is settling into the neighborhood!

___

That’s it for this week! As always, if there’s something happening on your block, a neighborhood issue you think deserves a closer look, or a story you think I should know about, send it my way.

And don’t forget those Halloween photos. I’d love to see them!

Nicole
