Stay connected with your care team

It is important to stay informed, ask questions, and maintain open communication with the professionals involved in your care. Families often feel more confident when they have reliable information and trusted support along the way.

Stay active in ways that feel right for you

Many individuals living with Parkinson’s look for simple ways to stay engaged and maintain daily routines. Light movement, walks, and structured activities may be part of a well-rounded lifestyle, depending on personal preferences and guidance from qualified professionals.

Prioritize rest and daily routines

A consistent daily routine can help create more structure and comfort at home. Rest, calm surroundings, and steady support can make everyday life feel more manageable for both individuals and families.

Join a support group

Whether you are living with Parkinson’s or caring for someone who is, support groups can provide encouragement, connection, and a sense of community. They also offer a space to share experiences and learn about local resources.

Lean on trusted help

Navigating Parkinson’s often involves practical day-to-day needs. Having dependable support at home can ease stress, promote safety, and help families feel less alone.

Become an advocate

Advocacy can help raise awareness and connect more families with support, education, and community resources. Whether you are a family member, friend, professional, or someone personally affected by Parkinson’s, your voice can make a difference.

Plan for the future

As needs change over time, planning ahead can provide greater peace of mind. Many families find it helpful to think through home support, daily routines, safety needs, and long-term care preferences early on.

Stage 1

Symptoms may be mild and may not significantly interfere with everyday routines. Early changes in movement, posture, or facial expression may begin to appear.

Stage 2

Symptoms may become more noticeable and may affect both sides of the body. Daily tasks can take longer and may require more effort.

Stage 3

Balance and mobility challenges may become more apparent. At this stage, individuals may still live independently but often benefit from additional support with daily routines.

Stage 4

Symptoms may become more limiting, and greater assistance with everyday activities may be needed. Safety and supervision at home often become more important.

Stage 5

At this stage, extensive support is often needed for daily living, mobility, and personal care.

Beginning Stage Support

  • Meal preparation
Changes in movement and coordination can make meal preparation more difficult. A care partner can help with planning and preparing meals to support comfort and convenience at home.
  • Daily routine support
Staying on schedule can become more challenging over time. A care partner can provide gentle reminders and help support a more consistent daily routine.
  • Accompaniment to appointments
Having someone there for appointments can provide reassurance and practical support. A care partner may accompany your loved one, offer encouragement, and help families stay informed.
  • Companionship
A new diagnosis can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation or uncertainty. Companionship can provide comfort, connection, and emotional support throughout the day.
  • Light housekeeping and laundry
Household chores can become more physically demanding over time. A care partner can help with light housekeeping and laundry to maintain a safer, more comfortable home environment.
