MESA, Ariz. — Nestled between an ice cream parlor, a barbershop, and a coffee house in downtown Mesa is a brand new brick-and-mortar bookstore, "Beyond Words Bookshop," opening July 5.
Beyond Words began as a pop-up bookstore started by former Valley teacher Kelly Boggs in 2024. Boggs set up her shop at farmers' markets and events throughout the East Valley before she decided she wanted to open up her own shop.
In the spring of 2025, Boggs applied for the Local Launch Grant initiative through the city of Mesa and the Nile, after another bookseller, owner of Twice Upon a Time Books, Alyssa Prewitt, told her about the opportunity.
"For another person that's in the same business—that she could have been competing for this—she sent it to me," Boggs said. "I was like, 'Oh my gosh, that's so amazing.'"
While taking her kids back to the classroom, she found out she won, earning six months of rent and utilities for a physical space in the Green Belt. Boggs had decided to leave teaching and pursue bookselling full-time just a few weeks before she got the news that she won the grant.
"I got the spot in the prettiest little section in Mesa," Boggs said. "I'm excited to be a part of it."
After months of renovations, painting, putting in bookshelves, cleaning, and more, Beyond Words is ready to greet customers starting July 5. The shop features a large selection of kids' books and middle-grade reads, as well as gently used books and bookish goods.
On Saturday, July 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can see the brand-new physical space in Mesa. Beyond Words will be open weekly:

It wasn’t until off-duty EMT Kaitlyn Hixson got out of her car and went to check on Nuttall. She said by that time, no one had called 911. “Even his right side, I could only get the door cracked enough to basically wedge myself enough to talk to him,” Hixson said.
Nuttall was taken to the hospital and suffered injuries to his collarbone, lacerations on his body, and a bruised sternum and ribs.
An image caught by Nuttall’s Tesla shows the other driver seconds before the crash, holding what Nuttall said was a cellphone. “Knowing that he literally just magically appeared and had no care in the world for what was next to him or in front of him, it’s terrifying,” he said.
This crash was Nuttall’s second car accident involving a distracted driver in one year. He’s encouraging all drivers to be cautious and be aware. “If you need to text and drive literally just pull off to the side of the road. Or speak to Siri. She’s pretty cool, too. Or ChatGPT. Or just freaking wait,” he said.
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) said there is no indication that a citation was issued to either driver at the time of the crash.

Nammo Defense Systems operates a munitions manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona. The facility began manufacturing in the 1960s as Talley Industries Inc. (aka Talley Defense Systems) and the Nammo Group purchased the business in 2007.
Previous manufacturing caused groundwater contamination of perchlorate and other substances. Perchlorate is both a naturally occurring and manmade substance that is harmful to human health. Perchlorate is an ingredient in rocket fuel, munitions, and explosives. Currently, contamination from this site does not impact public drinking water.
The facility began environmental study and cleanup efforts in the 1990s. In February 2021, Nammo signed an Administrative Order on Consent (“Order”) with EPA. In the Order, Nammo agreed to cleanup contamination caused by perchlorate and other substances. EPA’s role is to administer the Order and oversee the environmental study and cleanup that Nammo performs.
Nammo currently operates interim groundwater cleanup. The facility pumps groundwater from the ground and removes contaminants. Under the Order, Nammo must continue the current groundwater treatment. Nammo must also conduct a detailed environmental study of the entire facility. EPA will decide what additional cleanup the facility needs based on the results of that study.
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is the State of Arizona’s environmental agency. Nammo elected to participate in ADEQ’s Voluntary Remediation Program in 2019. The ADEQ oversees Nammo’s study and cleanup of groundwater on the southern side of the facility (former Plant 3 area). Please contact the ADEQ for more information on the Plant 3 investigation. EPA oversees environmental study and cleanup for the rest of the site.
The Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community is a federally recognized Tribe with land located next to the Nammo facility. EPA coordinates with the SRPMIC on the study and cleanup. EPA oversees the Order and coordinates the study and cleanup among all the parties.
EPA is currently reviewing Nammo’s proposed plans for investigation. The plans cover the study of soil and groundwater. Nammo will complete the environmental study after EPA review. EPA will use the results to decide what Nammo must do to finish the cleanup. EPA will provide the public opportunities for input before deciding the final cleanup actions. EPA will update this website when public input opportunities are available.

Apex Power Conversion, a solar and storage company, announced on May 19 the ribbon cutting of its U.S. headquarters and manufacturing facility in Mesa, Arizona in conjunction with the American Clean Power Association’s CLEANPOWER 2025 Expo at Phoenix Convention Center.
This 206,000 square-foot facility, currently used for customer engagement and product training, will be expanded for advanced multi-megawatt power conversion manufacturing for integrating renewables and energy storage with the grid. The first full units are expected to be manufactured in the first quarter of 2026.
“At Apex Power, we are relentless in pursuing our mission to develop and manufacture the most advanced power conversion systems — technologies that directly enable the integration of renewable energy and storage onto our power grids. It is a humbling honor to launch Apex Power’s headquarters and manufacturing operations in my family’s hometown of Mesa, AZ,” said Apex Power Conversion President & Co-Founder Jacob Marshall. “Apex’s culture is grounded in our purpose and our partnerships, and we look forward to showing the world exactly what we are capable of.”
Apex Power will initially employ up to 300 people, with plans to employ up to 700 by 2029. The company is investing over $60 million into the facility.
In Mesa, Apex Power will access the growing infrastructure, supply chain and workforce pipeline of Greater Phoenix. This facility, located on Elliot and Signal Butte roads, will complement the company’s research & development and manufacturing production in Spain.
