The National Weather Service said the storm particularly affected areas south of the city and into Washington County, with up to 3 inches of rain falling in about an hour in some areas. As a result, southern sections of Allegheny County were under a flood warning for much of the evening.
"The rainfall rates are pretty heavy," said David Shallenberger, an NWS meteorologist in Moon.
The Pitt-UCF football game was delayed for about an hour, and the Irish festival said in a Facebook post that it would reopen when the storms passed through the area.
The storms left some households without electricity. Duquesne Light Co. reported nearly 6,000 customers without power at the height of the storm, while First Energy said it had about 1,700 customers without power statewide.
Weather radar showed another line of storms moving in at about 5 p.m., and Shallenberger said that front should move through the region and wrap up by 8 p.m.
The rain is forecast to end shortly after midnight Saturday into Sunday.
Saturday night’s forecast calls for showers with a chance of thunderstorms in the evening, then showers likely with a slight chance of thunderstorms after midnight.
The chance of rain is near 100% for Saturday night, with the overnight lows in the mid-60s.
Sunday’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies in the morning, then becoming partly cloudy and humid with highs in the lower 80s.
Sunday night shows a slight chance of thunderstorms in the evening. It will be mostly cloudy with lows in the upper 50s.
Things clear up some on Monday, which is forecast for mostly sunny weather with a chance of showers with highs in the lower 70s, with a 30% chance of rain.

FAYETTE COUNTY, PA — A trip to the pharmacy two months ago proved quite rewarding for Tony Corso.
While at the Walmart in South Union Township, he bought a Powerball ticket for the July 25 drawing. On Thursday, Pennsylvania Lottery officials presented him with a commemorative check for $1 million.
“I was there picking up my wife’s prescription. She recently suffered a heart attack,” said Corso, 65.
Corso said that on his way out, he happened to be walking past “the lottery machine” and decided to buy a $20 ticket.
“I like to play when the jackpot gets big,” said Corso. The jackpot for that particular drawing was $600 million.
The next morning, Corso said he checked his tickets and noticed one that prompted the message “See clerk.”
“I thought, ‘That’s strange,’” said Corso. “I threw it back on my counter until Monday came along.”
He ended up checking the numbers on palottery.com with his wife right by his side.
“She started saying, ‘I can’t breathe!’” said Corso. “Then she said, ‘Well, I think you’re a millionaire!’”
Corso recently retired in May after running a small tire business.
“I didn’t really need the money,” he said. “But it feels good to have it.”
Despite the excitement of winning, his focus remained on his wife, whose birthday is September 11.
“To me, her life is more important,” he said. "This prize will help my wife fully retire."
Corso also looks forward to enjoying time with his seven grandchildren and two great?grandchildren, saying he’s grateful for the unexpected blessing and the people who matter most.
“Tony’s story reminds us that it only takes one Pennsylvania Lottery ticket to deliver a life-changing moment,” said Secretary of Revenue Pat Browne. “Each ticket purchased by players like Tony also directly support essential programs for older Pennsylvanians."

After heading to Atlanta for a Week 1 matchup against the Falcons just two years ago, the Steelers will now host them in the season opener this time around at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy's first game as the team's head coach.
Here are our bold predictions for the Steelers in what's lining up as a particularly favorable bout for them.
DK Metcalf, more often than not, will likely be covered by A.J. Terrell, Atlanta's No. 1 corner and one of the better players on the entire team.
The Falcons did a good job of limiting opposing tight ends last season, allowing the 12th-fewest receiving yards with 816 (per Pro Football Reference).
Atlanta's cornerback room isn't anything to write home about beyond the eldest of the two Terrell brothers on the team, however. Avieon Terrell, who was a second-round pick out of Clemson in the 2026 NFL Draft, figures to play from the slot while Mike Hughes will play likely on the boundary opposite A.J. Terrell.
Pittman Jr., as a result, could be in for a big Steelers debut despite his limited reps working alongside Aaron Rodgers and lead the team in receiving yards on the day.
The Falcons' run defense was rather poor in 2025, allowing the ninth-most yards per game on the ground with 126.2.
Atlanta is severely lacking in quality run stuffers on the interior of its defensive line, with perhaps LaCale London or Da'Shawn Hand being its best player in that regard, and its inside linebacker group is rough beyond Divine Diablo.
Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle should have plenty of holes to run through, even if Pittsburgh's offensive line is a question mark, and the pair posting a combined 135 rushing yards or so shouldn't be out of the question.
From Drake London to Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson, among others, Atlanta has plenty of weapons to keep tabs on in the passing game.
Dean had a quiet summer for Pittsburgh after signing a three-year deal worth $36.5 million with the team in free agency. Considering he allowed the fewest yards per target (4.7, minimum of 50 targets) and the lowest passer rating among outside cornerbacks (41.3) last year according to Next Gen Stats, however, he's still very much a top-flight player.
The 29-year-old knows the Falcons well from his days as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Dean will shine in coverage in Week 1 while also coming away with an interception in his first contest for the Steelers.
To be frank, Atlanta's quarterback situation is a mess. Tua Tagovailoa suffered an oblique injury in practice on September 10 and 2024 first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. is battling through a knee injury, meaning third-stringer Cooper Rush might get the start.
Rush spent five years playing under Mike McCarthy with the Dallas Cowboys and went 9-5 over that span as a starter, but he threw no touchdowns and four interceptions over 52 passing attempts for the Baltimore Ravens last season.
The Falcons are going to be overly reliant on Robinson regardless of who's behind center for them, and he's more than capable of taking over a game by himself, but it won't be enough.
Pittsburgh, on the back of a strong defensive performance, will go out and capture a 23-9 victory as it opens the season 1-0 heading into a Week 2 matchup with the New England Patriots.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, September 10, 2026 -- Liberty Pultrusions, a leading manufacturer of custom fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) pultrusions, today announced a capital investment of nearly $700,000 to expand manufacturing capacity at its Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania production facility. The investment reflects the company's continued commitment to innovation, customer service, and supporting growing demand across the electrical insulation, structural composites, and industrial manufacturing markets.
The expansion includes the installation of a new state-of-the-art pultrusion production line capable of adding approximately 600,000 pounds of annual manufacturing capacity. In addition, Liberty Pultrusions is retrofitting and expanding an existing production line, increasing production capabilities by another 200,000 pounds annually. The project also includes the addition of new production tooling designed to maximize efficiency and support increased output across the company's broad portfolio of standard and custom pultruded composite products.
Construction and equipment installation began on July 6, 2026, with the expansion being implemented in phases. Initial production capacity was added beginning July 13, 2026, while the remaining equipment and tooling will be installed over the following 60 days. Once completed, Liberty Pultrusions expects the project to increase its overall manufacturing capacity by approximately 8 to 10 percent during the next 12 months.
The expansion comes in response to sustained growth throughout Liberty Pultrusions' core markets, particularly within the electrical insulation and power distribution industries, where demand for high-performance composite materials continues to increase.
