PITTSBURGH —
The Department of Government Efficiency said it is canceling leases for several federal government offices in Western Pennsylvania.
DOGE, led by billionaire Elon Musk, posted a list of office lease terminations on its website.
The list includes three Western Pennsylvania offices for the Mine Safety and Health Administration in Warrendale, Mount Pleasant and Waynesburg.
The state headquarters office is in Mount Pleasant. The Warrendale office oversees mine inspectors in 14 states.
DOGE said closing those offices will save $2.5 million.
A spokesperson for Rep. Chris Deluzio said his office “is monitoring the situation facing the Mine Health and Safety Administration facility in Warrendale and is working to understand the impact to jobs and public safety if the Trump Administration’s DOGE follows through on its threat to cancel the facility’s lease.”
Some workers in the MSHA offices said they have not been given any details about if or when the offices will close, or whether any employees will lose their jobs.
"Nothing has been actually seen as far as, you know, a sign on the building saying, ‘do not enter’ or ‘up for lease or rent,’ " said Lilas Soukup, of the American Federation of Government Employees. Her local represents workers at other agencies.
MSHA referred Action News Investigates to the General Services Administration, the government agency that manages property. But they offered few specifics.
In a statement, a GSA spokesperson said: "A component of our space consolidation plan will be the termination of many soft term leases. To the extent these terminations affect public facing facilities and/or existing tenants, we are working with our agency partners to secure suitable alternative space."
Another office targeted by DOGE is a space in Somerset where the National Park Service oversees the Flight 93 National Memorial.
No one was at the office when Action News Investigates was there earlier this week.
In a statement, a Park Service spokesperson said: "We are actively working with GSA to ensure that every facility and asset is utilized effectively, and where necessary, identifying alternative solutions that strengthen our mission."
DOGE said there will be no savings from closing the Somerset office.
"The employees are like, 'OK, will I have a building to return to?'” Soukup said.
The Somerset office and MSHA facilities in Waynesburg and Mount Pleasant are in Rep. Guy Reschenthaler’s district. His office did not respond to requests for comment.
DOGE was also targeting a Federal Aviation Administration office in Coraopolis and multiple government offices in Butler County employing hundreds of workers. But in recent days, those closures disappeared from the DOGE website.
