Newark Symphonic Winds - Free Spring Concert
Time: 7:00 PM or by 6:30 PM if you’d like to hear a little pre-concert jazz!
Location: Newark Memorial High School Theatre, 39375 Cedar Blvd., Newark, CA 94560
The Newark Symphonic Winds (NSW), under the superb direction of Mr. Richard Wong, will present our Free Spring Concert.
We’ll begin this evening with a medley of tunes in remembrance of Rocky Balboa from the Broadway show “Rocky on Broadway” arranged by Patrick Rosell. The medley includes: “Gonna Fly Now,” “Fight From the Heart,” and “Eye of the Tiger.” We’ll next perform “March of the Trolls” from the Lyric Suite, Op. 54 by Edvard Grieg that was arranged by Brian Beck. We’ll follow that with a little bit of the magnificent music of John Williams in the composition “Princess Leia’s Theme” from “Star Wars: A New Hope.” We’ll end the first half with another medley, “Pixar Movie Magic” arranged by Michael Brown that includes many of your favorite tunes from the Pixar movies. We certainly hope this last medley will encourage you try-out some of our luscious intermission treats!
After intermission we are proud to present the music of Montecito Brass. Their musicians include Mike Peterson and Alan Osofsky on trumpet, Blossom Santiago on horn, Doug Brown on trombone, and Raul Dingle on tuba and bass trombone. Their tunes include “Quintet 1, opus 5, movement 3” by Victor Ewald; “Everything’s Alright” by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber and arranged by their very own Mike Peterson; “General Mixup, USA (1906)” by Thomas. S. Allen, arranged by Mark F. Adler.
Our second half begins with the winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Musical, “Dear Evan Hansen,” which has delighted audiences worldwide. Please listen to selections from the musical scored by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul that was arranged by Michael Brown. Our next piece, “Make Our Garden Grow,” is from the operetta “Candide” by the great Leonard Bernstein. This composition was arranged by Joseph Kreines. Following will be “Blue Tango” by Leroy Anderson that will certainly get you swaying in your seats. Our final piece of the evening is a medley of tunes from one of the most beloved popular musicals of all time, “The Sound of Music” by Richard Rodgers and arranged by Jim Christensen. Feel free to sing along with “Do-Re-Mi” as we perform.
We are once again extremely fortunate to have this performance sponsored by the Fremont Bank Foundation. As always, the concert is free of charge, and no tickets are necessary. Simply come and enjoy the evening with us - and be certain to bring all your friends. You might want to plan on arriving somewhat early for this performance for two reasons.
First, to get the seating you prefer, but second, because beginning around 6:40 PM we’ll have an eight-piece jazz group – Mango Jazz Combo – from Kennedy High School. The combo is comprised of Ayler Ehling (clarinet, and alto and soprano sax), Matthew Kim (trumpet), Alan Margoschis (trombone), Srikar Nanduri (tenor and baritone sax), Jaeden Konglathu (tenor sax), Dylan Avilla Rodriguez (bass guitar), Danielle Hernandez (drums), and Deborah Chen (piano). They’ll be performing “Mingus Mash Up” by Charles Mingus and arranged by Srikar Nanduri and “Remember” by Cesar Cardozo transcribed by Ayler Ehling. You definitely don’t want to miss these extremely talented musicians.
