We'll begin by saddling up presenting an energetic piece, “Cowboy Christmas,” arranged by Jeff Simmons. Next will be the very popular melody in "Fantasia on 'Greensleeves'," arranged by Douglas E. Wagner followed by the traditional French carol, "Bring a Torch," arranged by David Shipps. Our next piece is a medley of holiday tunes, "Walkin' Down Christmas Lane," arranged by JaRod Hall. We'll end the first half of our performance with all the children up front at the stage to listen to our emeritus Mayor - the Most Honorable Dave Smith - reading Newell Long’s “'Twas the Night before Christmas.” After Dave's reading, we'll have our traditional, and most exciting visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus - so be certain to bring the kids and grandkids - they'll love getting a chance to talk with Santa just prior to Christmas!

After intermission, we’ll begin our second half featuring the wonderful music of the Newark Saxophone Quartet. The quartet is comprised of Peter Greeff on baritone saxophone, Steve Leitner on tenor, Andy Ehling on alto, and Jim Carter on soprano. They’ll perform "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," by J.S. Bach, transcribed by K. Abeling, "Still, Still, Still," a traditional piece arranged by Thomas H. Graf, and then jazz it up a bit with "Swinging Jingle Bells (in Glenn Miller's Spirit)," arranged by Phillippe Marillia.

Once the symphony returns to the stage, we’ll perform the inspiring "Symphonic Prelude on Adeste Fidelis," by Claude T. Smith, followed by another medley of lesser-known holiday tunes, "Christmas in Europe" by Timothy Johnson. Next will be the up tempo, "An American Christmas," arranged by Robert W. Smith.

Then it will be your turn to take part in our annual Holiday performance and join in our community Sing-along. This year the sing-along will be led by Joan Carter, our wonderful announcer.

Our penultimate piece "Fum, Fum, Fum," arranged by Chip Davis and Robert Longfield is a takeoff on a traditional Spanish carol. We’ll end our performance with the tune all of you most want to hear during this season - our traditional rendition of the most wonderful holiday piece ever composed – “Sleigh Ride,” by the great Leroy Anderson.

We are once again extremely fortunate to have this performance sponsored by the Fremont Bank Foundation. As always, the concert is free-of-charge, and no tickets are necessary. Simply come and enjoy the evening with us - and be certain to bring all your friends. In that we have experienced full-house attendance at our performances, you might want to plan on arriving earlier than 7:00 PM to get the seating you prefer.

Mowry Village Housing Project approved by Newark City Council

After countless meetings, public comments and over 2,700 petition signatures, Newark City Council approved the Mowry Village Housing Project on Dec. 11 with a 3-1 vote and one abstention. The opposed and abstained vote came from Councilmembers Marie Little and Matthew Jorgens, respectively.Evan Knapp of Integral Communities, the developer, said they have been working on the housing project since 2018. After countless meetings, public comments and over 2,700 petition signatures, Newark City Council approved the Mowry Village Housing Project on Dec. 11 with a 3-1 vote and one abstention. The opposed and abstained vote came from Councilmembers Marie Little and Matthew Jorgens, respectively.

Evan Knapp of Integral Communities, the developer, said they have been working on the housing project since 2018. It will be located at the current Pick N’ Pull auto junk yard on 7400 and 7550 Mowry Avenue.

There would be 196 single family homes and a 31-unit affordable housing building. Knapp said they want housing at this site because it’s currently a blight to the community. The area is poorly lit, has no drainage and is used for illegal dumping.

Those who are against the project say they want to preserve wetlands, protect people against sea level rise and prevent flooding. About 26 people spoke during the meeting either opposing or supporting the housing project.

A representative of Eden Housing said, “We’ve also reviewed the environmental studies thoroughly and believe that the mitigation measures included in the plans contribute to the livability and reflect what industry leaders and investors will accept in affordable housing. They give us confidence that this is a safe, healthy and livable site.”

Eden Housing also bought Ruby Meadow, a much-contested land parcel in Castro Valley, in 2023.

BART director Liz Ames, who represents Newark, Fremont, Union City and parts of Hayward, also attended the city council meeting. “I think Newark can be a leader in this effort,” she said prior to the vote. “We could build housing in other areas, we can build fair housing for the missing middle that’s workforce housing, not for the elite. And I hope that this council votes no on this project.”

BART officials are also working on an affordable housing project next to the Fremont station.

6222 Thornton Ave. is Nancy Benton’s art studio. She creates paintings using mediums such as acrylic and gouache. Best known for urban landscapes, her work also references the environment, pop-culture, social issues, personal identity and humor. She currently exhibits at SF City Art Gallery.

35911 Ruschin Dr. is my art studio. I am a figurative artist who had a textile piece displayed in the De Young Museum in 2023. At first glance, my art looks like a painting, but a closer look shows many layered and stitched small shapes of fabric creating the design. My favorite designs are printed on silky fashion scarves.

Emelie Rodgers is displaying her decorative and functional glass at Dedic’s studio. She utilizes many different techniques including painting on glass to create images of sea turtles, mermaids and exotic flora and fauna. Copper inclusions make her pieces shimmer. From large bowls, platters, to vases, ornaments, glass jewelry and holiday gift sets, her creative style is stunning.

36541 Cherry St. is Simone Archer’s studio where she does finishing touches to paintings that she has started while plein art painting in the midst of nature’s beautiful landscapes, seascapes and favorite Tri-City landmarks. Visitors can see her kiln that she uses to fire decorative ceramic tiles.

Lynn Kozma is Archer’s guest artist. Kozma has an array of cozy knitted and crocheted items including scarves, gloves and mittens, many with whimsical designs.

39675 Cedar Blvd. #135 is Imaginook Art Studio owned by two talented artists, Tetiana Taganska and Olga Tymoschuk. When not busy teaching art classes at their studio, Taganska is passionately painting and Tymoschuk is creating masterful ceramic sculptures. Impressionistic landscapes, flowers and portraits are Taganska’s favorite themes. Tymoschuk imbues her ceramic sculptures with emotion and ideas that focus on the human experience.

Textile and jewelry artist Susan Helmer is also at Imaginook. Using watercolor techniques and

French liquid dyes, Helmer paints on silk. Best known for her series of picturesque succulents, her subjects range from florals to abstracts. She also will display her beaded jewelry pendants and earrings.

The weekend event is a perfect opportunity to shop unique holiday gifts and know the artist and story behind each creation.

“I’m truly happy to see Chavez Supermarket join our city and breathe new life into a building that had been sitting empty for far too long,” said Newark Vice Mayor Eve Marie Little. “Their arrival brings more than just a new place to shop—it brings greater access to fresh goods for our residents, new job opportunities for local families and an increase in business activity that strengthens our entire community. The store’s location on the Thornton Avenue shopping center provides ample parking. Inside, the store offers many amenities. There is a deli section for choice meats and seafood, a bakery where customers can order custom cakes and a taqueria which offers plenty of seating should customers choose to dine in.

In addition to food options, the store also has kitchenware items and culinary tools that are mostly used for Hispanic cuisines like a tortilla press and molcajetes. The supermarket also has windows where customers can send money internationally, a service that many Hispanic residents look for.

Chavez Supermarket will hold their official two-day grand opening on Saturday, Dec. 6 and Sunday, Dec. 7. The celebration will include music by Mariachi Mexicanisimo, clown shows for kids, food tastings, piñatas and chances to win prizes.
