One of the traditions of the late Dr. Bill Gray — forefather of seasonal hurricane predictions and great-great-grand-doctoral advisor to the WeatherTiger — was ringing a bell on August 20th to mark the beginning of the most active six weeks of hurricane season.

One of my core beliefs is that Florida deserves a more culturally specific version of this rite of passage. Perhaps dumping some bath salts into Biscayne Bay, ceremonially placing jorts on Michaelangelo’s David, or even releasing unwanted exotic reptiles into a pristine wilderness might dispel hurricane season’s ill winds.

However one chooses to meditate on the peak, it is here: over 60% of the Atlantic’s total tropical activity occurs between August 20th and September 30th.

This year, that bell was even more of a starting gun than usual, with a remarkable four named storms developing in the Atlantic on August 20th and 21st.

Harold and Hilary claim their place in hurricane season history

One of these, Tropical Storm Harold registered the first continental U.S. landfall of 2023* on Tuesday morning, rolling into Texas between Brownsville and Corpus Christi as a mid-range tropical storm packing beneficial rainfall.

This storm was organizing quickly in its final hours due to the friction between air and land that sometimes causes a pre-landfall pop in intensity, and smoldering water temperatures in the upper 80s. Another day over water and it likely would have been a dangerous hurricane.

(*Unusual caveat: Harold was the first Atlantic-side continental U.S. landfall of 2023, as Tropical Storm Hilary claimed first U.S. landfall on Sunday night when its weakening center moved straight into Compton, preceded by flooding rains across much of the Southwest. If verified, Hilary will be only the second tropical storm landfall in California on record, the first since 1939, and the only one to be accompanied by a random-but-seemingly-portentous magnitude 5.1 earthquake.)

Does Harold herald additional landfalls? For the U.S., not in the short- or medium-term.

Could Franklin become the second Atlantic hurricane of 2023?

The other active storm today is Tropical Storm Franklin, which has moved little for several days to the south of Hispaniola. Franklin has been struggling under strong wind shear and is likely to continue to do so as it crosses Haiti and the Dominican Republic by Thursday, potentially bringing flash floods.

Fortunately, a trough of upper-level low pressure in the western Atlantic will turn it east and away from land later this week, and Franklin the Energy Turtle is extremely unlikely to ever threaten the U.S. East Coast. It may well become a hurricane as it accelerates north towards Bermuda and eastern Canada in 7 to 10 days.

Befitting the strange and difficult 2023 hurricane season, two other storms stumbled out of the blocks and crashed into the first hurdle earlier this week.

Both Emily and Gert were open-ocean systems lasting less than two days at tropical storm intensity, officially making them short-lived storms, or “shorties.” So while 2023 has notched an impressive nine storms, it also has had more shorties than a Wawa during Hoagiefest, with five of those nine blipping quickly out of existence.

What to watch over the next 10 days: Inklings of a possible Gulf threat?

That total may not rise soon, but there are a few features to watch for possible development over the next ten days. At this time of year, every tropical wave emerging from Africa has at least a puncher’s chance of development, but a break from east Atlantic activity into the weekend is a good bet.

A possible feature worth watching for Florida is the chance that a broad area of low-level turning near Central America may coalesce into a more organized tropical disturbance over the southern Gulf of Mexico or northwest Caribbean by the middle of next week.

Should this happen, it would be a concern for the U.S. Gulf Coast as steering currents around an eastern U.S. dip in the jet stream might try to pull anything that develops north. There is literally nothing to watch on the map right now and may never be, so this is just a long-range heads-up based on the weather pattern, not a cause for alarm.

Cautious optimism for landfall risk for rest of August

For now, the landfall risk outlook for the remainder of August is cautiously optimistic, given that upper-level steering winds should protect the U.S. from any classic peak season hurricane threats from the east for at least the next 10 days.

However, the widespread water temperatures south and west of Florida pushing 90 degrees are unprecedented and alarming. If the Gulf was a drink, it would be Long Island iced tea: potential bad decisions in every direction.

Pour a ceremonial libation of your choice in the hope that we can dodge the peak season of hurricane season without tapping that potential. Keep watching the skies.

LSU has a supercar that it refuses to drive over 25 miles per hour.

That’s the only way to describe how the Tigers used Harold Perkins in fifth-ranked LSU’s 45-24 loss to No. 8 Florida State on Sunday. While the sophomore posted just a 41.8 grade in the game, that should be chalked up more to what he was asked to do than his capabilities.

Perkins played 28 snaps in coverage against the Seminoles, four times the amount he did as a pass-rusher (seven). That’s because he spent most of his time as an off-ball linebacker rather than where he plays best: edge defender.

The ability to nail a “ghost” move off a euro-step approach, as he did in the above clip, is rare, and it only points to Perkins' unique skill set rushing the passer.

By making him an off-ball linebacker, that game-wrecking ability is completely neutralized. His situation is very similar to Micah Parsons‘ during his time at Penn State and early in his career with the Dallas Cowboys. He was used as mostly an off-ball linebacker at that time but flashed insane potential when he lined up at edge defender. Finally, the Cowboys made him a full-time edge and unleashed one of the best pass-rushers in the league.

In his postgame press conference, LSU head coach Brian Kelly had this to say about Perkins’ performance.

“He’s learning how to play a new position. We put him in a position last year where he was ‘See ball, get ball.’”

Kelly would be wise to let Perkins “See ball, get ball” full-time, much like the Cowboys did with Parsons.

Tropical Storm Franklin heads to Hispaniola, Harold weakens to depression

The National Hurricane Center was eyeing multiple weather systems including Tropical Storm Franklin and Tropical Depression Harold on Wednesday.

None of the systems posed an imminent threat to Florida.

Tropical Storm Franklin was expected to cross Hispaniola Wednesday and emerge over the southwestern Atlantic by Wednesday night, according to a morning update from the hurricane center. Forecasters anticipate the storm will bring heavy rain across much of Hispaniola into Thursday and could produce significant flash and urban flooding.

Franklin was also bringing tropical storm conditions to portions of the Dominican Republic and Haiti Wednesday morning, forecasters said. The storm was moving north at 10 mph and had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.

Tropical Storm Harold, which made landfall at Padre Island, Texas on Tuesday morning, weakened to a depression overnight as it moved over northern Mexico. Forecasters expect the system will bring heavy rain to portions of Texas and southern New Mexico and could produce flash flooding. Flash flooding across portions of far northern Mexico was also possible.

The tropical depression is moving west northwest at 14 mph and had maximum sustained winds of 30 mph.

Forecasters are also watching two other systems in the Atlantic.

In the central Atlantic, an area of low pressure — the remnants of former Tropical Storm Emily — was several hundred miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands. Forecasters said the system could regenerate into a tropical depression or storm late this week or this weekend when it moves over the subtropical central Atlantic.

The system has a 50% chance of formation in the next two days and a 70% chance in the next week.

In the eastern Atlantic, showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave several hundred miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands could develop slowly through early next week. The system is expected to move west-northwest across the central Atlantic.

The system has a 10% chance of formation in the next two days and a 30% chance in the next week.

While none of these systems are currently predicted to move over Florida, the busy tropics serve as a reminder to prepare for the remainder of the hurricane season. The peak of the season, when most tropical activity occurs, is mid-August through mid-October.

Tropical activity is showing no signs of slowing down after Tropical Storm Harold formed Tuesday and made landfall in Texas, adding to a quickly growing list of named storms this season.

The National Hurricane Center was watching two tropical storms — Harold and Franklin — along with three other weather disturbances across the Atlantic on Tuesday. None pose an imminent threat to Florida.

Tropical Storm Harold is the ninth named storm of the season (an unnamed subtropical storm formed in January). The tropical storm became the fourth named Atlantic storm in just 39 hours — the fastest time on record for four named storm formations, according to Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist with Colorado State University.

In an afternoon update from the hurricane center, forecasters said Harold was about 20 miles east-southeast of Hebbronville, Texas, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. Harold was expected to bring heavy rains to south Texas through early Wednesday and produce areas of flash and urban flooding.

Harold was moving swiftly toward the west-northwest at 21 mph and forecasters expect the system to continue in that direction across south Texas. Forecasters also warned of flash flooding with mudslides across portions of Coahuila and northern Nuevo Leon in Mexico through Wednesday.

Forecasters anticipate Tropical Storm Franklin will usher in heavy rainfall across portions of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola into Thursday. The heavy rain could produce areas of flash and urban flooding along with mudslides.

Franklin was about 230 miles south of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday afternoon and was moving northwest slowly at 7 mph. The system should turn north on Tuesday and continue in that direction through Wednesday. Franklin was expected to reach the southern coast of Hispaniola on Wednesday and then move off the northern coast on Thursday.

Elsewhere in the tropics, Tropical Depression Gert became Post-Tropical Cyclone Gert on Tuesday after hours of hanging on by thread. Forecasters said the remnants of Gert should slowly dissipate.

Forecasters are also watching two other systems in the Atlantic.

One in the eastern Atlantic was producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms and could become a tropical depression by later this week as it moves west-northwest across the eastern Atlantic. The system as a 10% chance of formation in two days and a 40% chance in the next week.

In the central Atlantic, the remnants of Tropical Storm Emily were hundreds of miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands. Forecasters said conditions could become more favorable for re-development later this week. The system has a 10% chance of formation in two days and a 30% chance of formation in the next week.

While none of these systems are currently predicted to move over Florida, the busy tropics serve as a reminder to prepare for the remainder of the hurricane season. The peak of the season, when most tropical activity occurs, is mid-August through mid-October.

When LSU’s defense took the field against a talented Florida State offense on Sunday night, all eyes were on No. 4.

Harold Perkins enters his sophomore year with high expectations after becoming one of the SEC’s most impactful pass rushers as a true freshman, but Sunday night wasn’t the introduction many expected.

It was an overall quite game for Perkins, who totaled five tackles (two solo) but did little else to impact the stat-sheet or the game as he was largely anonymous, especially as Florida State’s offense started pulling away in the second half.

He primarily played off the ball at inside linebacker, and his edge rushing snaps came at a premium. After the game, Brian Kelly said he’s still facing a learning curve at linebacker.

“What was missing? Well, I mean, you know, he’s playing a position for the first time,” Kelly said. “So there’s a learning curve there. He’s learning. He’s learning how to play linebacker for the first time. You know, we put him in a position last year where he was see ball, get ball.

“Now he’s in a position where, you know, he’s got to get over the top. He’s got a back coming out of the backfield. He’s got to be disciplined and can’t lose his eyes on the quarterback mesh. Fourth down, there’s a lot going on there, and he’s trying to sort it out. You’re catching a young player early on in his career, and he’s going through some growing pains.”

Perkins could settle into his new role as the season goes on, but it seems fair to question if sacrificing his impact as a pass-rusher is worth the potential reward.
