Kristi Miley, PhD, a researcher at the USF College of Public Health’s Center for Global Health and Infectious Disease Research, studies mosquito-borne diseases in Florida.
Sten H. Vermund, MD, PhD, dean of the USF Health College of Public Health and chief medical officer of the Global Virus Network, whose international headquarters are based at USF, is an infectious disease epidemiologist.
Juan David Ramírez-González, PhD, professor of Global, Environmental and Genomic Health Sciences, studies tropical and vector-borne diseases in Florida and Latin America.
Miley: Dengue is a viral illness that spreads through the bite of infected Aedes Aegypti or Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes. Both are already established here in Florida.
Local transmission occurs when someone gets dengue while traveling, then returns to Florida, and is bitten by a mosquito here that picks up the virus and later passes it on to another person.
Why are we seeing dengue in Tampa?
Miley: The mosquitoes that can spread dengue are already here. We are seeing warmer temperatures and lots of rain. This gives these mosquitoes plenty of places to breed. They don't need a puddle or a pond. All they need is water sitting in a flowerpot, bucket, tire, or other small container to breed.
Aedes mosquitoes also live very close to people in and around homes.
Vermund: Some people with dengue never feel sick but can still pass the virus to mosquitoes. But many people have a fever and headache. Pain behind the eyes is common, along with muscle and joint aches. Some people have nausea or develop a rash. While most people recover without serious problems, it can be life-threatening in a small number of people.
People should seek medical attention if they are experiencing severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, marked weakness or trouble breathing. If dengue is circulating locally, your healthcare provider can send special blood tests for diagnosis.
Also watch the timing. Sometimes your fever goes away in a few days, but that's when a small proportion of people start to get much sicker. If other symptoms worsen as the fever comes down, seek medical care.
Vermund: Call your healthcare provider and make sure you're staying hydrated. Don't take aspirin or drugs like ibuprofen if you suspect dengue, as they can raise the risk of bleeding. Acetaminophen is recommended for fever and pain. Stay in touch with your provider, especially if you start feeling worse.
There's no antiviral treatment for dengue. While you're sick, try to avoid mosquito bites, too. People with dengue can pass the virus to mosquitoes during roughly the first week of illness. A mosquito can then pass the virus to a neighbor, co-worker or family member.
Miley: Emptying standing water around your home is extremely effective. Check places like flowerpots, children’s toys, buckets, gutters, and old tires. Mosquitoes don't need much water to lay their eggs.
If you find standing water, dump it. Don't think of mosquito protection as something you only need in the evening. Aedes aegypti also bites during the day, so use repellent when you're outside during daylight hours too. I also suggest checking the screens on your windows and doors for holes that could let mosquitoes inside.
Miley: Once you've had one dengue serotype, you generally have long-lasting immunity to that particular one. There are four dengue serotypes, and we've seen evidence of all four in Florida. A second infection with a different serotype can sometimes lead to more severe disease, which is why we pay attention to which serotypes are circulating in Florida.
We've been looking back at what was happening when these cases showed up and asking questions like: Was it especially hot? How much rain had we had? What were mosquito numbers like? We're trying to see whether those pieces tell us anything about when we're most likely to see dengue cases increase.
Ramírez-González: The tropical regions of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean face dengue year after year, giving their scientists and public health teams extensive experience responding to it.
We can learn from how other countries track cases, control mosquitoes, diagnose infections and respond when cases rise. Florida is closely connected to the region through travel, so sharing what we're seeing and learning from colleagues who've dealt with dengue for years benefits everyone.
Miley: Last year, I presented our Florida dengue research at a Global Virus Network Regional Meeting for the Caribbean and Latin America in Jamaica. Dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases were a big part of the discussion.
During that meeting, I spoke directly with researchers who see much more dengue in their countries than we typically see in Florida. These relationships and connections help us reach out and exchange information quickly when cases rise.
Ramírez-González: Looking at what's happening across the region can also give us an idea of what we might see in Florida. Which serotypes are circulating? Are outbreaks changing? What are scientists seeing in mosquito populations? When we compare that with our own data, we can start to spot changes that might otherwise be missed.
Miley: Start with your own yard. After it rains, look for anything holding water and dump it. Clear gutters where standing water might harbor mosquito larvae. For containers too large to dump, “Mosquito Dunks” can kill mosquito larvae without harming animals or humans.
Use mosquito repellent during the day and evening. Remember that the mosquitoes that spread dengue bite during the day, too.

Tampa Bay's offense moved the ball well enough in the opener to stay competitive, and Mayfield is the quarterback who has to turn that efficiency into finished drives. He threw for 216 yards on 23 of 28 passing with a 98.8 rating in Week 1, while the Buccaneers converted 50 percent on third down.
Cleveland gave up 34 points in its opener but still produced a sack and a forced fumble, so Mayfield's assignment is cleaner red-zone execution without the empty possessions. Keeping drives alive and finishing with points gives Tampa Bay a strong chance to control the game script.
Tampa Bay already showed Irving can be a central piece of the offense, especially after Sean Tucker was inactive in the opener. He handled clear RB1 duties in Week 1 as the Buccaneers averaged 4.45 yards per rush and scored 2 rushing touchdowns.
Cleveland allowed 34 points and missed tackles on defense in Week 1, which is exactly the kind of look that rewards a decisive runner. Irving giving Tampa Bay balance and staying ahead of the chains takes pressure off Mayfield and helps the Buccaneers finish drives.
Cleveland needs much more from its passing game in key moments after a slow offensive start, and Watson is the Browns quarterback who has to deliver it. In Week 1 he threw for 205 yards and a touchdown but also turned it over (an interception and a lost fumble) while completing 16 of 22 passes, but Cleveland scored only 10 points and converted just 1 of 8 third downs in a 34-10 loss.
Tampa Bay allowed 33 points in its opener but also came away with an interception return touchdown and 6 passes defended. Watson avoiding the drive-killing mistakes and keeping Cleveland on schedule is what keeps the Browns competitive deep into the game.
With Dylan Sampson on injured reserve, Sanders is lined up for an expanded workload behind Quinshon Judkins, which makes him one of the more interesting names in this game. In the opener he had 3 catches for 25 yards and added 1 carry, a glimpse of how he can help as a secondary back and outlet option.
Tampa Bay gave up 89 rushing yards in Week 1 and has to clean up a defense that allowed 33 points overall. Sanders turning extra snaps into efficient touches helps Cleveland sustain drives and take some strain off Watson.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP/WJW) — Week two of the NFL season was a success for the Cleveland Browns, as they defeated Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay.
In the first quarter, the Browns received five penalties. Tampa Bay kicked a field goal early, scoring three points, and they scored another later on in the quarter. Cleveland also scored a field goal. Tampa Bay got a flag for unnecessary roughness toward the end of the quarter.
The second quarter started with Watson getting sacked, and he was sacked again later in the quarter. Cleveland initially tied things up with a field goal, scoring three points. Tampa Bay got a flag that sent them back 10 yards. The Browns got stopped on fourth down late in the quarter.
The third quarter saw Tampa Bay score a touchdown early in the quarter; they went on to kick an extra point, scoring a total of eight points. The Browns tied the game at 16 thanks to a 55-yard pass from Watson to Denzel Boston in what would be his second touchdown in as many weeks.
The Browns took a 23-19 lead with 3:51 left in the fourth quarter thanks to a 17-yard touchdown pass from Watson to Blake Whiteheart.
Officials suspended the game for a lightning delay with 2:00 left in the game. Play is set to resume at 6:10 p.m., more than two hours after the delay began.
The Buccaneers ended up turning the ball over on downs, leading the Browns to take the 23-19 win.
It’s worth digging into the story behind today’s game. Baker Mayfield has become the leader and face of the franchise the Cleveland Browns hoped for when they drafted him No. 1 overall in 2018.
Sunday afternoon, the quarterback is taking on his former team on Tampa Bay turf.
What did the veteran quarterback learn in his four years in Cleveland?
“A lot of things. I think probably the biggest one (is) trying to be the same person each and every day for the guys in the locker room, the people you work with, the staff that you’re around each day, (and understanding) that some things are out of your control,” Mayfield said. “If you’re trying to get it fixed and you’re not worried about the football aspect of your job, you’re probably letting some things slide and fall by the wayside. So, I think controlling who I am each and every day, trying to lead the best way possible and control the offense and, yeah, ultimately win.”
There’s of course more to the Browns-Buccaneers matchup than Mayfield facing his old team.
It’s two 0-1 teams looking to get on the winning track. Expectations are much different for both.
It’ll be a surprise if the Browns don’t finish last in a tough AFC North. The Buccaneers play in the weak NFC South where all four teams lost their openers.

The Browns are giving Deshaun Watson a second start with Shedeur Sanders watching from the sideline and waiting for an opportunity that could arrive when the team plays its first home game in Week 3.
For now, it’s Watson’s team, and the beleaguered QB is running out of chances to prove he can be the Pro Bowl player the Browns gave up a ton of picks to acquire four years ago.
“I always expect our players to play well; I wouldn’t put them out there if I didn’t,” Browns coach Todd Monken said. “So, I expect him to play really well. There was moments Sunday that he did, and there were moments we did a really good job offensively, and there were moments we didn’t. There were moments we didn’t coach well enough; there were moments we didn’t play well enough.”

Fay had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph as of the latest update and is located about 450 miles southwest of the Azores. The storm is more than 2,700 miles from Florida.
Fay is currently in an environment that is conducive to maintaining its strength, but forecasters expect those conditions to change.
Dry air and increasing wind shear are expected to move into the system, weakening the small and compact storm.
Fay is expected to make an abrupt turn and move southwest over the Atlantic. As it does, increasing wind shear and dry air intrusion are expected to further weaken the system.
The unfavorable conditions are expected to prevent Fay from reaching hurricane strength.
Local perspective:
Fay is far from Florida and is not expected to pose a threat to the state.
The storm's location more than 2,700 miles from Florida puts it well out in the Atlantic, and its forecast track is expected to take it away from the U.S.
