A fire in San Ramon Wednesday morning severely damaged the historic 19th-century Harlan House, also known as El Nido House, which has ties to the California Gold Rush.
The fire burned at about 10:30 a.m. at the building located on San Ramon Valley Boulevard between Westside Drive and Woodborough Way, just west of Interstate Highway 680.
The San Ramon Valley Fire District said the two-story building was actively involved when firefighters arrived. There were no injuries in the fire, and the cause was under investigation, the Fire District said. The fire destroyed the roof and attic area and appeared to have gutted most of the building.
The current owner of the building and the land surrounding it, Sohail Siddiqi, told CBS News Bay Area that the El Nido House has been plagued by trespassers over the years. He also said that firefighters told him that arson was suspected.
"They have some, a few people of interest. They are talking to them, they are investigating," Siddiqi said. "We don't know who they are. Apparently, somebody made a video of some kids moving away from the property when the fire started. So, we don't know all of that detail. Police is investigating, fire department is investigating, so once they know all of the details, we will find out."
The home is the oldest building in the city of San Ramon, built in 1852 by Joel and Minerva Fowler Harlan with earnings from gold prospecting. Members of the Harlan family moved from Michigan to California in 1848 after gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in El Dorado County, according to the Contra Costa County Historical Society.
The Harlan House was built on what later became the Alameda-Contra Costa county line, and was dismantled and moved several miles north to its present location in 1858 when Joel Harlan began receiving property tax bills from both counties, according to The Harlan Family in America.
The house was called "El Nido," or "the nest" in Spanish, likely referring to the Harlans' nine children they raised in the home.
Siddiqi said he had plans to incorporate the historic building into an assisted living facility at the site, but the project has been mired in red tape, and the home has remained unoccupied for decades. Previous plans had included moving the home to a different location and demolishing the building, with the various proposals fiercely debated.
Siddiqi and San Ramon leaders had pushed to preserve the building as part of the city's and California's history.
"Unfortunately, the whole process has been dragging along. We have an application that has been reviewed for almost three years now and [what to do with the Harlan House] has been the only sticking point," said Siddiqi. "This was the fear all along, either this building would collapse on its own, or there'll be some kind of arson."
Siddiqi said it was unclear whether the building could be restored or rebuilt as a replica.

San Ramon, CA (June 29, 2025) – A serious motorcycle crash left one person with major injuries Saturday afternoon on northbound Interstate 680 just north of the Crow Canyon Rd off-ramp, according to the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District.
Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. The crash occurred around 4:50 PM when a motorcycle collided with another vehicle under unclear circumstances. Following the impact, both the motorcycle and the rider were left blocking traffic lanes, prompting a rapid emergency response.
The injured motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital for treatment of major injuries. The extent of the injuries and the current condition of the rider have not yet been released. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

Honey bees across the country are under attack from tiny, eight-legged parasitic mites. These mites burrow between the segments of the bees’ adult bodies or invade their larvae and infect them with viruses — deforming their wings and leaving them flightless.
That’s not only problematic for the bees — whose entire colonies can collapse from a mite invasion — but also for California, which relies on the bees for its food production and economy.
Earlier this month the state Assembly overwhelmingly passed a bill that would direct the California Department of Food and Agriculture to establish a health program for managed honey bees. The department would work with beekeepers, farmers, scientists and other stakeholders to provide grants for projects and research that support managed honey bees.
Honey bees are essential for pollinating almonds, which are a lucrative multibillion-dollar industry. The bees also produced 13.3 million pounds of honey in 2024, or nearly 10% of the country’s supply, valued at $32.8 million.
But beginning in the late 1980s, Varroa mites native to Asia began infiltrating bee colonies in the U.S. By the early 2000s, they were “in everyone’s hives,” said Ryan Burris, the president of the California State Beekeepers Association.
Pesticides and other pest management methods stabilized the bee population over the decades. But commercial honey bee deaths have been soaring in the U.S. in recent years, and the reason why remains unclear. Between June 2024 and March 2025, beekeepers lost 1.6 million colonies — an average of 62% of their colonies.
The proposed program would provide grants to help beekeepers and farmers plant more crops or purchase probiotics to improve the bees’ health, among other things.
The bill is currently before the Senate Agriculture Committee, where it could be considered as early as mid-July.

Gov. Gavin Newsom is open to giving California public employees a temporary break on his return-to-office mandate.
The union representing about 14,000 state engineers made a deal that delays the four-day-a-week order for one year. It was supposed to take effect July 1.
The Professional Engineers in California Government disclosed that agreement alongside a new contract that includes some concessions Newsom wanted to trim payroll expenses as he tries to shore up a $12 billion budget deficit.
Workers represented by the union will get a 3% raise next week, but it’d be offset by mandatory unpaid time off that would basically negate the pay increase for two years. That’s similar to the terms of a deal Newsom made last week with the union representing state prison guards.
Newsom embraced telework policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. He brought public employees back to the office twice-a-week last year, and ordered a bigger move to four-days-a-week in May.

The final step of the Budget Process took place as part of the regular City Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 27.

On November 21, 2024, Sunset Development Company submitted formal applications for The Orchards development project located at 6001 Bollinger Canyon Road (formerly the Chevron Corporation Office Park). The applications were deemed complete on March 26, 2025.
The Project is currently being analyzed in relation to local and state standards including the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), etc.
The first public meetings to review the formal applications took place at the Architectural Review Board Meetings on May 1 & May 8.
