“I live in Texas and my Mom was in California, so communication was key to me in knowing how my Mom was doing, and what she might need. ABC did all the right things; from setting up an online portal that would allow my siblings and I to see what each caregiver was doing during her in-home care, to billing questions, medication requirements, etc. Everything was transparent, and that's so important when it comes to caring for an older family member. Their office staff is outstanding as well. From billing questions to change requests, they never made me feel like I was asking for too much, or that they didn't have time to make sure my Mom was always taken care of. Always Best Care took the time and effort to make sure my mom was taken care of in the best possible way, and for that I will be eternally grateful. Highly recommend their service!”

“My nickname for Bill is Clarence the Angel from "It's a Wonderful Life". At the worst possible time, in the middle of a pandemic, my elderly mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. I had 1 week to find a place for her to live and set up hospice care. In addition I had no other family support. That is when I found Bill/ABC. What a joy! He listened to my needs, concerns, budget and general stress all with great patience and concern. He guided me through the process, set up home tours and advised me what to look for while interviewing prospects. Within 1 week we were able to place my mom in a wonderful home where she can spend her remaining days happy and cared for. The relief I feel cannot be measured and I will be forever grateful to Bill and team.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Oakland, CA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local The Wolf or visit Oakland Museum of California, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Oakland, CA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Oakland, CA

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your CA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Oakland, CA

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Oakland, CA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Oakland, CA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Oakland, CA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Ivy Park at Oakland Hills
  • Pacifica Senior Living Oakland Heights
  • East Bay Assisted Living
  • Merrill Gardens at Rockridge
  • Elder Ashram
  • Lakeside Park
Home Care Oakland, CA

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. Some seniors are more proactive about transitioning to independent living. Others choose to remain home until their care needs or other requirements are satisfied. Remember - our staff is here to help. Contact our office today to learn more about assisted living communities and how we can find a facility that exceeds your expectations.

Oakland, CA – This morning, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee, City leaders, and community members gathered to celebrate the grand reopening of the West Oakland Senior Center, marking a major milestone in Oakland’s commitment to providing safe and welcoming public space that promotes seniors' wellbeing.

“Investing in the West Oakland Senior Center protects our older adults from the serious health risks of loneliness by restoring community, connection, and dignity,” said Mayor Barbara Lee. “This reopening is long overdue, but reflects a promise kept. West Oakland now has a modern, accessible hub for crafts, fitness, and essential social services, while ensuring every Oakland resident can age with the health, independence, and respect they deserve.”

Located across from the historic DeFremery Park and the West Oakland Branch of the Oakland Public Library, the West Oakland Senior Center serves as an important hub for programs, social connection, and supportive services. “Our seniors deserve spaces where they feel valued, supported, and connected. The reopening of the West Oakland Senior Center represents a critical investment in the well-being and quality of life of our older residents, said Councilmember Carroll Fife. "This revitalized space will provide opportunities for seniors to access essential services, build meaningful relationships, and remain active in the community they love. I’m excited to see this center once again serve as a place of connection, care, and belonging in West Oakland.”

Following a two-year renovation, the building has reopened with enhancements designed to improve comfort, safety, and ease of access for members who rely on its services each day. The renovations include new ADA accessible path of travel and electrification of major building systems, including of the HVAC system and the commercial kitchen. Additional work included interior and exterior paint, lighting upgrades, ceiling repairs, and second-story window replacements. The project modernized core systems, making the 12,000 square foot facility safer, more functional, and easier to navigate.

“Our goal was to open a facility that supports essential programming—from social gatherings to meals and wellness activities,” said Jimmy Mach, Assistant Director of Oakland Public Works. “These upgrades ensure the center remains reliable and efficient so that members have a place where they can thrive.”

Funding for the $3 million project was provided through Measure KK, which supported facility upgrades and path-of-travel improvements. A CalRecycle grant funded the purchase and installation of new energy efficient kitchen appliances. Together, these investments help ensure that the West Oakland Senior Center remains a welcoming and dependable community resource for Oakland’s older adults for years to come.

“Reopening the West Oakland Senior Center strengthens the network of care our seniors rely on every day.” said Greg Elliott Interim Director of the Human Services Department. “This center is a place for people to gather, connect, and feel seen.”

Betty Hicks, Chair for the West Oakland Senior Center Advisory Council added, “For many of us, this center is a second home. WOSC provides us with a safe, nurturing, caring, and loving environment. It keeps us connected. These improvements demonstrate that the voices of Oakland seniors’ matter.”

The ribbon cutting ceremony included music, light refreshments, and remarks from City leadership and community partners.

Residents over the age of 55, interested in becoming a member and participating in programs and services are invited to visit the West Oakland Senior Center or call (510) 238-7016, Mondays through Thursday, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm for more information.

The Oakland Human Services Department exists to make our city a place that works for all. We offer free programs and provide public resources to community organizations that make sure all of our residents can access what they need to be safe, healthy and realize their full potential.

The City provides programming that support independence, safety, health, and active living for seniors. Aging and Adult Services works with community partners to deliver services that include care management, jobs, training, volunteering, recreation and transportation assistance.

Oakland Public Works is charged with building, maintaining, and improving the City’s infrastructure including public buildings, sanitary and storm sewers, lighting, and City-owned vehicles and equipment. Public Works provides or administers essential environmental services including solid waste and recycling services; illegal dumping abatement; street sweeping; maintenance of parks, trees, and medians; and watershed management.

Brush fire in hills above UC Berkeley damages vacant estate

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- A brush fire that broke out Tuesday on the border of Berkeley and Oakland raised concerns among fire officials and residents, but a rapid, multi-agency response prevented it from becoming a larger disaster in the hills above UC Berkeley's Memorial Stadium.

The fire ignited before noon in the 1000 block of Panoramic Way and burned approximately 1.5 acres. Authorities said no evacuation orders were needed, and crews were able to keep the blaze from spreading despite difficult terrain.

Firefighters said the incident carried the potential to become much more serious.

"This had the potential to really take off and be a really large-scale event," said Oakland Fire Department Chief Damon Covington. "The multi jurisdiction response between Berkeley, Oakland and CAL FIRE East Bay regional. They all got on scene about the same time."

The fire occurred one day after the 35th anniversary of the 1991 Oakland Hills Firestorm, adding to the anxiety for some longtime residents.

"I was driving across town and looked up and saw the smoke," said Oakland Hills resident Sue Noyes. "Having lived through the '91 fires, it always gives uses bit of concern."

The blaze prompted a response from about 75 firefighters representing multiple agencies. Crews battled flames in steep, hard-to-access areas above Memorial Stadium.

"These are narrow roads. Very tight, windy roads," said Oakland Fire Department spokesperson Michael Hunt.

Fire officials said weather conditions ultimately worked in their favor.

"Slow moving on an upslope. The wind pretty favorable for us today. The heat. Not so bad," Hunt said.

A helicopter conducted water drops to slow the fire's progress. Officials credited coordinated planning and improvements made since the 1991 firestorm for helping contain the blaze.

"A lot of the things we saw in the 1991 Oakland Hills fire were not apparent today," Covington said. "So really just the great job of the firefighters holding it to one building, keeping it to an acre-and-half, and not letting it get it to way from us and turning it into something large scale."

Hunt said agencies have worked for decades to improve interoperability and mutual aid responses.

"Means making sure we have radios functions properly together, hydrants are able to connect to hose lines, the way they are supposed to," Hunt said. "But really, it's just building relationships to ensure that our incident commanders, our battalion chiefs, fire chiefs and incident commandments all able to work well with each other."

Residents expressed gratitude for the response.

"It's pretty incredible they were able to put it out," said Oakland Hills resident Jennifer Fang.

Noyes also praised the firefighters' efforts.

"The response from Cal Fire, Alameda, from Oakland was incredible," she said. "And so heartwarming. We actually got a little bit emotional seeing this wonderful response in our community services here. Our local fire department showed up for us today. It means a lot to us."

Although the fire was contained, crews remained on scene Tuesday conducting mop-up operations and monitoring for hot spots.

"We're going thru the scene right now doing mop up and searching for any hidden signs of fire because the fire can get into the root of the vegetation and it can smolder for a while," said Oakland Battalion Chief Anthony Sanders. "We have thermal imaging cameras that we use and drones that we use and these are all things that came up post 1991."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

OAKLAND, CA — An Alameda County collaborative condemned Immigration and Customs Enforcement, accusing agents of using "brutal" force during the recent arrest of two people in the East Bay.

ICE did not respond to a request for comment from Patch.

Alameda County Immigration Legal Education Partnership, a countywide collaborative network founded nearly a decade ago to protect, support, and empower undocumented communities in the region, made the accusations in an online post on Monday.

"This past weekend, federal agents appear to have used excessive force in two arrests, one in Emeryville and one near San Antonio Park in Oakland," the group said online. "Both people were injured and needed hospital care."

The collaborative says they're in contact with both people arrested and are providing them with legal support.

"Both have asked for their privacy to be respected,: the group said. "We ask the community and the media to honor their wishes."

The arrests came as the Trump administration continues to push ICE to increase daily immigration arrests as midterms near.

The disturbing attempt to arrest a U.S. citizen riding a bicycle over the weekend in Long Beach also sparked outrage across California over excessive force.

During the arrest, according to the Long Beach Watchdog, ICE agents struck Ricardo Gonzalez with an unmarked car, then tased him twice before handcuffing him.

No arrests were officially made, but video of the incident amassed more than 100,000 views in just a few days.

The city's mayor, Rex Richardson, said he was "outraged" by the incident and that aggressive enforcement tactics were putting residents at risk.

"This is unacceptable, and it must stop," he said.

In Alameda County, the immigration legal partnership is asking community members to combat this by contacting elected officials and demanding accountability, and to connect with local organizations to stay informed, share only verified reports, and know your rights.

"We are grateful for the community's support and solidarity as we continue to help both individuals and protect our community's rights," Alameda County Immigration Legal Education Partnership said.

How electric school buses power 1,000 homes in California – and make money

If you’ve spent much time around the electric vehicle space, you may have heard about vehicle-to-grid, perhaps by the acronym V2G (or its cousins, V2H/V2L/V2X, etc).

The basic idea is: if we’re looking to add batteries to the grid or to homes to increase stability and smooth out demand, why don’t we use the massive amounts of batteries available inside electric vehicles for that purpose?

The idea has been talked about for years, but for the most part has not reached wide adoption. The California Energy Commission estimates that V2H could save homeowners a few hundred dollars per summer, and cut peak demand by up to 5GW statewide if it was broadly implemented. But to do this with consumer EVs, homes would mostly need some sort of costly equipment added, and most EVs aren’t V2G-enabled (though that may be changing).

But for fleet EVs, installation can be a lot easier. Putting V2G in homes requires a lot of small scale projects, distributed across a region. But putting V2G in a fleet location lets you access a lot of batteries in one big project, and lets you aggregate those batteries more easily.

So that’s exactly what Tellus Power, a charging equipment manufacturer in Irvine, CA, is doing. We took a tour of its facility and met with CEO Mike Calise and CTO Srikanth Kanaparthi.

The company has been building AC and DC chargers (up to 480kW) since 2010, but its newest push is into V2G chargers, particularly for fleets. It assembles them in America, and they’re “Build America Buy America” compliant.

Its first project in this push was an installation of V2G chargers for Oakland, CA’s school district, covering 74 school buses. The chargers were built by Tellus, and the project is operated by Zum. We first wrote about the Oakland project in 2024, but now we have a couple years of data to show how it’s going.

Collectively, the buses have a total of 11.5MWh of energy storage. Buses fill up overnight, use about 20-40% of their charge during the day, then plug in to V2G chargers after the school day and discharge to feed the grid, just in time for the late afternoon rush on electricity, when people get home and turn on air conditioning, start cooking, turn on the lights and so on.

Or on holidays and summertime (when the grid is the most stressed in California), they can be a grid resource all day long.

74 buses may not sound like much, but with the amount of energy available on board and the total power output of the chargers, it can fuel a lot of houses. The fleet can discharge at about 2 Megawatts at once, and each house uses about 2 kilowatts on average in the evening (though that can spike higher due to HVAC/EV use). That means, altogether, this fleet of 74 buses can power around a thousand homes.

Over the course of the last two years, the bus fleet has returned a total of 1.7GWh of energy to the grid, and has had over 99.5% uptime. This basically turns the fleet into a small and reliable peaker plant, which has delivered on the order of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of electricity to the grid over the last couple years.

Tellus says V2G capacity can get onto the grid faster than any other kind of power plant. A fleet V2G depot can take months to deploy, compared to a timeline of years to build and attach other power plants to the grid. And Tellus says that its chargers differ from others on the market in that they don’t require large transformers on-site, which makes deployment faster and less expensive.

V2G isn’t strictly a “power plant,” since it’s not generating electricity. But it does shift supply to when it’s needed most, which is also when it’s most expensive. This “energy arbitrage” lets Zum buy power when it’s cheap and sell it when it’s expensive, which makes money.

That’s Tellus’ oldest project, but there are others in place and being built – 4 school buses in Burlington, VT; 2 city bus chargers for Lynch Bus Lines in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada; a pilot program at 3 school district sites for ComEd in Illinois; and a fleet of 104 school buses (scaling to 238) in San Francisco, CA.

Very nice!

It's only one school district. If it is most school districts in CA, like 100 school districts, it could be 200 MW of power, which definitely chips at reducing gas peaker plant usage.

If these busses had solar PV on top? It's ever chipping at reducing emissions. That's the great thing about solar+storage, you can incrementally add it, just a little at a time, and year by year, it becomes cheaper, more effective and will power more and more of our energy needs.

But even though buses are a popular choice for V2G, there are plenty of other municipal vehicles that are ripe for electrification, which have similar duty cycles and could be used for grid services.

Trash trucks are an obvious one, and they’re the next direction Tellus would like to go in. There are a number of electric garbage trucks out there, and they could generate revenue to offset costs in the same way that school buses can.

All of this together offers a large revenue opportunity for fleets, whether those fleets be private or public. If you have a bunch of vehicles, running those vehicles off of batteries can both save you money on fuel (especially with oil prices being at all-time highs) and generate revenue with grid services, if you install V2G chargers.
