ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico saw its first winter storm of the 2025-26 season that brought as much as a foot of snow to some places in the state.
Many major cities in New Mexico, including Albuquerque and Santa Fe, woke up to snow Thursday morning, while places like Gallup, Grants, Silver City, Las Cruces, Hobbs, Roswell and Carlsbad missed it.
Albuquerque Metro Snow
Albuquerque itself saw around 1-4 inches of snow, according to a mapping system used by the National Weather Service:
The big winner was east of Albuquerque, around three miles north of Cedar Crest where they saw 12 inches of snow. Edgewood received the most snow of any metro city, receiving around 6-7 inches.
Tijeras saw 8.2 inches. Along the road to Mountainair, Chilili saw seven inches:
Rio Rancho saw around an inch of snow while the outskirts of the city saw 2-3 inches. Although there wasn’t much snow, the storm produced some haunting scenes like these where the lights refracted and danced among the fog and low-hanging clouds.
Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico Snow
Las Vegas was the big winner among New Mexico cities, with 7.6 inches recorded.
Santa Fe also received some snow that was more sporadic. The area near the plaza received about a half-an-inch while the southwestern outskirts saw 2.6 inches.
Going down the Turquoise Trail, the snow piled up. Los Cerrillos saw around 3-4 inches while four inches blanketed the lovely village of Madrid – and the Sandia Park area saw around 8-10 inches of snow.
Other northern New Mexico totals: Raton (3.5 inches), Taos (3 inches), Jemez Springs (3 inches), Los Alamos (2.7 inches).
Farmington received 2.2 inches while our neighbors in Colorado saw around eight inches of snow (Pagosa Springs) and four inches (Durango, Trinidad).
Southeastern New Mexico Snow
Southeastern New Mexico saw its share of snow. Cloudcroft received 2.8 inches of snow while Ruidoso received a couple of inches and the Capitan area received around 3-5 inches.
All that snow got one deer out for a chilly walk Thursday morning:
