Johnnie’s Appliance in Glendora is closing after more than 55 years of selling new appliances on the Black Horse Pike at Station Ave. Owner Joe has owned the business for 35 years and he is retiring after a lifetime in the local appliance business.
The local Glendora Facebook pages lit up over the weekend after the small going out of business sign appeared in the window of Johnnie’s.
With 55 years in business Johnnie’s has likely served multiple generations of local families, and because of that the store closing really connected with a lot of people.
Additionally, countless numbers of commuters have noticed the two story building while sitting at the traffic signal or shopping in area businesses such as Larry’s Cold Cuts which is located across the street.
For multiple generations Johnnie’s was a one-stop-appliance-shop for kitchen appliances such as refrigerators, stoves and dishwashers.. and even washing machines and dryers and more.
Owner Joe focused on high quality brands such as KitchenAid and Maytag with a goal of providing the best customer experience
For most of the years operating, Johnnie’s also offered a full service department where they kept a large inventory of parts on hand.
Johnnie’s Appliance – Retiring
I stopped in this afternoon and caught up with Joe who says he’s selling out his remaining inventory and expects to be closed after this week.
A handwritten sign inside the store says November 1st is the last day… Joe says he has a deal in place to sell to another retailer any item that still remains in the store after he closes.
Joe tells 42Freeway that after 35 years owning Johnnie’s (and even longer in the local appliance business, including American Appliance), he will be retiring to spend more time with his grandchildren and two children who still live in the area.
Joe and the family had been thinking about selling the business for awhile and recently put the building up for sale thinking it would take some time to sell, but to his surprise they had an offer within 30 days for the 100+ year old building that was built in 1920.
The property features the large retail store on the first floor with a retro full front wall of glass, as well as three one-bedroom apartments on the second floor… no wonder this property grabbed the attention of Real Estate Investors.
Joe expects the new owner to invest some capital into building upgrades and then find a tenant to lease the lower level retail space, which features a large backroom area with garage door, and a basement.
Settlement for the building takes place very soon, which caused Joe and his team to escalate the going out of business sale.
Long time locals may remember when previously the building was Fletcher’s Cycle Shop and then before that Hecky’s Cycle Shop… both of which had specialized in Triumph Cycles.
I saw a mention in my newspaper archive that back in 1950, Brennan’s Delicatessen being located in the space!
Good luck to Joe and his family on the retirement, and thank you for decades of quality service to the community.
