Research Review: The Challenges Of Long-Distance Home Care

In a report for the Journal of Gerontological Social Work, researchers Cagle & Munn (2012) conducted a systematic review of 15 different studies highlighting the unique challenges posed by long-distance home care arrangements.

Their meta-analysis revealed that:

  • Long distance home care providers struggle with slow response times and high commuter costs. On average, long-distance home care providers required about 4 hours of one-way travel time to reach the care recipient. This imposes substantial commuter costs on family caretakers, and also contributes to chronic caregiver stress and anxiety, as family members fear they cannot reach their loved ones fast enough in emergencies.
  • Long distance home care providers struggle to balance career and elderly care commitments. Cagle & Munn (2012) found that a large majority (80%) of long-distance caretakers reported being employed either full or part-time, and these career commitments complicated their long-distance care planning, as they needed “allowances for time off, phone access, and benefit information from their employer.”
  • Long distance home care providers report higher physical, mental, and career distress related to caregiving.Cagle & Munn (2012) found that 64% of long-distance caregivers (LDCs) report “their caregiving situation has adversely impacted their employment,” 79% of LDCs “report being adversely affected by caregiving… noting declining health, social impairment, or anxiety,” and “caregivers living further from their elderly relatives are more likely to take sick leave.”

If you can relate to these challenges, take heart: you’re not alone, and our home care team is here to help!
