The Damboree Committee learned this weekend that their order, largely from Shanzhou Fireworks, was cancelled. “The entire Damboree Committee is deeply saddened by the lives lost in Central China,” said Damboree Chair Roger Hall. “Canceling the show would disappoint residents, especially children, so we worked with our vendor to get a smaller supply. The show will go on, but it will be noticeably shorter.” Entry for parking at Veterans Memorial Park will be reduced to $10 per vehicle (previously $20). “We believe residents will be sympathetic and still have a great Independence Day,” Hall said. “We’ll work to put on a bigger, better show for 2026.”

The statue, which was paid for by community donations, is now the focal point of the park and features Patton in full dress in a warrior pose. The statue was revealed exactly twenty years to the day of Patton’s death during Operation Redwings in Afghanistan.
Prior to the unveiling, Nellis AFB and the Boulder City Veterans Pilot Group, flew over the event. An honor guard presented the colors as Benson Harper sang the National Anthem before the assembled group. The park was filled with friends, family, and dignitaries, including Governor Joe Lombardo and his wife, State Representative Danielle Gallant, Senator Cortez Masto’s office, Mayor Pro Tem Sherri Jorgensen, Boulder City City Council Members Denise Ashurst, Cokie Booth, and Steve Walton. The Patton family was represented by James Patton, father, and Chase Patton, brother. Both spoke eloquently about their loved one prior to the unveiling.
The guest speaker was Captain Christopher Wear of Norfolk, VA. He shared memories of Shane during SEAL training school and described him as a funny, laid back person who was full of resolve and tenacity. He fondly recalled bonding with Shane over skating, surfing, and punk rock music.
Grant Turner of the Shane Patton Memorial Foundation spoke for a few minutes about the timeline of statue. The creator of the statue is Barret Thompson, a local resident. The statue was sculpted by world-renowned sculptor and professor, Grzegorz Gwiazda. The crowd was appreciative of the detail in the bronze likeness. The statue was funded in part by local community contributions, and by a generous donation by Victor DiCosola, another local resident.

Waites, an American Red Cross water safety instructor, knows every kid at the Boulder City pool — she’s been teaching them to swim since they were babies. The kids respond well to her because she’s a kid at heart too, she said.
“I do games and activities and songs and music with them,” she said. “Then they learn everything.”
One of her students, 8-year-old Walter Lawrence, came to the swimming lesson to brush up on his swimming skills. His mom, Charlene, has been bringing him and his 6-year-old sister Sarah for lessons since they were 9 months old.
“It’s a nice refresher to get them out here,” Charlene Lawrence said.
As Walter participated in the group lesson, he couldn’t help but show off how long he could hold his breath underwater.
“She only asks us to hold our breath for 4 seconds, but I can hold mine for 10, 9 seconds,” he said.
‘Swim lessons save lives!’
During the lesson, kids were separated by age with eight instructors providing small group instruction. Six lifeguards monitored the pool as the children hopped into the water.
The 30-minute lesson was separated into four parts: water safety, water entry, basic swim skills, and submersion and breathing. At the end, the kids gathered with their instructors at the shallow end of the pool.
“Swim lessons save lives!” they yelled to a camera.
The World’s Largest Swim Lesson isn’t Boulder City’s only water safety initiative for children. The aquatic department will provide free swim lessons for children up to age 4 with a $2,500 grant from the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council.
Since the worldwide event began, over 413,000 children and adults have learned basic swimming skills, according to the World Waterpark Association.
Fifty-four countries have participated in the World’s Largest Swim Lesson as of last year’s campaign.
According to 2024 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 4. In children ages 5 to 14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death.
The Boulder City Parks and Recreation Aquatic Department has set recommendations to keep children safe in pools, hot tubs, lakes and rivers. Those recommendations include:
— Have a designated adult supervisor free from distractions like phones and earbuds.
— Home pools and hot tubs should have fences or alarms.
— Supervisors should ensure children don’t swim or play near drains and suction outlets and no one should enter water with a loose, broken or missing drain cover.
— Children 13 and under are required by law to wear a life jacket on a moving boat unless they are in an enclosed area.

We are so excited for this much anticipated opening of Boulder City’s newest restaurant! Located at the former Tap location (704 Nevada Way) adjacent to the Best Western, we now have a new dining and drinking establishment – Your Mom’s Italian Kitchen and Bar.
The Grand Opening is slated for next Tuesday, July 1 and they have already concluded a soft opening, but they are kicking open their doors partially starting today at 11:00am. Proprietor Alex Gonzalez who you met earlier this year tells us they are opening the bar side at 11am with a small menu:
We visited with Alex and the team last week. They are all family owned and are working hard to create something special. The location has always had two sides of the venue – on the left is an ideal bar/restaurant and then the right side is an open seating area that has had a variety of uses, but will now be their dining room.
The decor is giving a nod to Boulder City and the history of the dam but also pulling in the family’s classic Italian roots, as many of the railroad workers who helped build the railway for the dam were Italian immigrants. The decor has fantastic upgrades without being formal or fussy. In other words, dress up if you wish but board shorts and flip flops are welcome!
The menu will be a solid selection of modern takes on Italian classics, plus a few steak and seafood options and a few flatbread pizzas. The emphasize a full and creative bar, along with 40 beers and a much needed wine selection.
We’re excited and we know you are too! We remind us all to give them some runway and be patient, since every new venture with an all-new establishment and staff needs some time to gel and work out the kinks. So be forgiving of any missteps but also share your thoughts on the menu, as Alex welcomes the feedback as they grow. We’ll see you there some night soon, Boulder City!
