Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Irvine, CA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your CA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Irvine, CA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Home Care Irvine, CA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring

Irvine, Calif., Sept. 22, 2026 — For the 12th year running, the University of California, Irvine has landed among the top 10 public universities in the country, placing eighth in U.S. News & World Report’s 2027 list of “Best Colleges” – its highest public-university ranking in over a decade.

Released today as part of U.S. News’ annual evaluation of more than 1,700 U.S. colleges and universities, the findings cement UC Irvine’s reputation as one of the nation’s premier public research institutions. The campus also placed 34th among all U.S. universities – public and private combined – and earned recognition across more than a dozen additional categories, from upward social mobility to individual academic programs.

For UC Irvine, the achievement is more than a number. It reflects a campuswide commitment to a proposition that can sound almost radical in American higher education: that world-class academics don’t have to be at odds with genuine affordability.

“We are all very pleased that U.S. News & World Report has once again recognized the distinguished excellence of our teaching, research and public service,” said UC Irvine Chancellor Howard Gillman. “Being in the top 10 for the 12th consecutive year is especially gratifying in light of our commitment to inclusive excellence and educating our state’s best and most talented students regardless of their financial circumstances.”

A track record that keeps improving

UC Irvine’s rise to No. 8 among publics builds on more than a decade of steady momentum. The campus was also named eighth in Best Value Schools for In-State Students and 11th in Top Performers on Social Mobility, a category that recognizes universities that enroll and graduate large numbers of students who receive federal Pell Grants – need-based aid for undergraduates facing significant financial hardship. UC Irvine has long been counted among the best in the country at graduating its Pell recipients, proof that access and excellence can move forward together.

In addition, the campus placed 16th in Best Colleges for Veterans and 50th among Most Innovative Schools, underscoring a breadth of strength that extends well beyond a single headline ranking.

U.S. News also evaluated a wide range of individual undergraduate and programs this year. UC Irvine disciplines ranked among the nation’s best include:

Making excellence affordable

Perhaps no myth is more persistent in higher education than the idea that a top-tier degree comes with a price tag out of reach for most families. UC Irvine has spent years working to dismantle that perception through some of the most robust financial aid programs in the UC system.

Through the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan, tuition and fees are fully covered for qualifying sons and daughters of California-resident families earning less than $100,000 a year. The Middle Class Scholarship extends support to families earning up to $234,000 annually, recognizing that the financial strain of college reaches well beyond the lowest-income households. Layered on top of those flagship programs are federal Pell Grants, institutional scholarships, hundreds of private awards administered through the campus’s financial aid office, and work-study opportunities that let students earn while they learn.

The result, university officials said, is that many UC Irvine graduates cross the commencement stage with far less debt than peers at private institutions – and, in a meaningful number of cases, none at all.

Degrees that pay off – in every sense

The return on that investment shows up in graduates’ careers. Studies consistently find that college alumni earn up to $1 million more over their careers than peers whose education ended with a high school diploma, and UC Irvine’s strength in high-demand fields – engineering, computer science, business, health sciences, and the biological and physical sciences – puts graduates in front of employers across Orange County and the broader Southern California economic corridor.

Many UC Irvine alumni are the first in their families to complete a four-year college education – a milestone that reshapes not just their own futures but the opportunities available to the generations that follow. It’s a return this year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings make official but one UC Irvine students and graduates have been living for years.

Leaders in higher education innovation

U.S. News also assessed the most innovative universities, and UC Irvine is in the top 50. Its strength in innovation is evident not only in groundbreaking discoveries but also in how it innovates teaching, research, technology and entrepreneurship.

Recent examples demonstrate innovation taking shape across the campus. For instance, the newly established Department of Systems Biology integrates mathematical modeling, genomics and experimental biology to tackle increasingly complex scientific questions. Additionally, UC Irvine is advancing the use of artificial intelligence through ZotGPT, a secure campus AI ecosystem that supports students, faculty and staff.

This culture of creativity extends beyond the classroom. Beall Applied Innovation assists faculty in transforming breakthroughs into patents, startups and commercial applications while connecting researchers with entrepreneurs, investors and industry partners. Students have similar opportunities through programs like the Stella Zhang New Venture Competition and the ANTrepreneur Center, where they can develop, test and launch new ideas. These efforts collectively facilitate the transition from discovery to practical application; strengthen Orange County’s entrepreneurial ecosystem; and amplify UC Irvine’s impact through innovative technologies, companies and partnerships.

About the University of California, Irvine: Founded in 1965, UC Irvine is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and is ranked among the nation’s top 10 public universities by U.S. News & World Report. The campus has produced five Nobel laureates and is known for its academic achievement, premier research, innovation and anteater mascot. Led by Chancellor Howard Gillman, UC Irvine has more than 36,000 students and offers 224 degree programs. It’s located in one of the world’s safest and most economically vibrant communities and is Orange County’s second-largest employer, contributing $7 billion annually to the local economy and $8 billion statewide. Federal authorities have charged a California realtor with spying on the son of the president of Taiwan in the United States.

Wanying Zhang, also known as Heather Zhang, was taken into custody Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport, where she’d planned to board a flight to China. The 34-year-old resident of Irvine, in Orange County, was charged with acting in the U.S. as an unregistered agent of the government of the People’s Republic of China.

According to Realtor.com, Zhang is a licensed realtor with JC Pacific Capital Inc. in Irvine and has sold more than 100 properties worth an average of $3.3 million.

“The complaint in this case lays bare a brazen plot directed by the Chinese government to conduct a covert surveillance mission on U.S. soil,” Roman Rozhavsky, assistant director of the FBI's Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, said in a news release. “Wanying Zhang’s arrest for allegedly acting as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government makes clear how far China’s authoritarian regime will go to advance its goals.”

According to court documents, Zhang worked in the U.S. as an agent of the Chinese government between June and September 2025 without notifying the U.S. Attorney General as required by federal law.

During that time, at the direction and control of Chinese government officials, Zhang arranged with others to promote Chinese interests by surveilling the Seattle home of a family member of a high-ranking Taiwanese government official, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

The office did not directly name Zhang's alleged target, but the FBI later shared a New York Post report identifying him as Lai Ting-yu, a U.S. resident and the son of Taiwanese president Lai Ching-te.

In June 2025, according to court documents, Zhang traveled from Southern California to China, where she met with Chinese government officials and was tasked with the U.S. surveillance. The documents say Zhang attended Beijing's University of International Relations, which is linked to China’s intelligence apparatus.

On Aug. 29, 2025, the documents said, Zhang and another unidentified person departed John Wayne Airport in Orange County to Las Vegas, then flew to Seattle three days later. As they left, Zhang messaged a photo of her boarding pass to a person believed to be a Chinese government official.

Upon arrival, Zhang and the other person rented a car and drove to the Lai's home where, according to an affidavit filed by FBI special agent Kevin Holt, a neighbor’s home security camera showed them apparently collecting phone camera footage from Lai's car and his family arriving at the home.

Zhang messaged the government official, saying, “Saw him, young male, it’s the young one.” When the official asked Zhang to join an audio call, the affidavit said, she responded, “I am videorecording.”

In addition to video footage, Zhang also sent the official license plate numbers for two vehicles parked in front of the home, the affidavit said.

China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, despite the objections of the government in Taipei, and has never renounced use of force to bring Taiwan under its control even as it says it would prefer "peaceful reunification."

According to Holt's affidavit, the surveillance was designed to acquire potential leverage over the Taiwanese president in the event of conflict.

"In addition to modernizing its military, the PRC has embarked on coercive activities that go beyond normal diplomatic, economic, and security activities, which are meant to erode Taiwan’s will to fight a war against China," Holt wrote.

If convicted, Zhang would face up to 10 years in federal prison.

“Protecting our national security means confronting foreign governments that engage in covert operations in our nation,” said Bill Essayli, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California.

Earlier this year, a Southern California man received a four-year federal sentence for covertly operating as a Chinese agent while serving as campaign advisor to a local city council candidate, carrying out orders that included monitoring Taiwan's former president during her 2023 California visit.
