Home Care In Houston, TX

Home Care Houston, TX

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Henry Staiti House gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Houston, TX is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

“I want to thank you for two wonderful sitters, Akefia and Sophie. I enjoyed Akefia so much! If it weren't for social distancing, we could have enjoyed puzzles and games. She was always ready for anything fun and things I needed. She learned my routines and automatically tended to them, too. For some reason, I never could recall her name consistently, so she let me call here Keke! Now I have no problem remembering her pretty name. Go figure! She and I enjoy colder weather, so we opened the doors every morning during the first cold snap. That cold air felt soooooo good. Sophie didn't like the colder nights, so she used a quilt, and I turned up the heater. Turns out, I enjoyed the warmer temperatures at night, too! Sophie always came in quietly if I was already in bed and checked on me if I got out of bed. Once, Akefia's ride came late and the three of us had a nice visit. I am using my walker now and the wheelchair when my foot tells me to give it tender loving care. My first physical therapy session is next week. I am driving and able to get small curbside pick-up orders at HEB. Akefia and Sophie got me over the hump to recovery.”

“I hired Always Best Care of Fort Bend because they're the ones close to me. They're the ones who responded to me quickly, and they have a good offer. Their work is very good, so my wife is also happy with them. The caregivers are supposed to be hands on. My wife's interactions with them are very, very good. That is what I want from the person who takes care of my wife. They do light housekeeping and companionship. They're helping her on the therapy side with a little bit of exercise. They basically assist her on normal stuff like urination, any body disposal, and showers. The billing is direct to my credit card, so there's no letter to be sent out; it's automatic.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Houston, TX?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Étoile or visit Historical Marker, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Houston, TX, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your TX's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Houston, TX understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Houston, TX

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Houston, TX

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at River Oaks
  • Belmont Village Senior Living West University
  • Brookdale The Heights
  • Bedford Residence Assisted Living
  • Belmont Village Senior Living Hunters Creek
  • Best Personal Care Licensed assisted living facility

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. HOUSTON -- — When the Houston Texans selected C.J. Stroud with the No. 2 pick in this year's draft, the consensus was that he'd turn this team around eventually.

Stroud had other plans, and the rookie quarterback's stellar play has the Texans a win away from reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2019 after a 26-3 victory over Tennessee on Sunday.

“The time is now,” he said. “It’s not next year. It’s not the year after that. It’s right now. We have the opportunity to control our own destiny so I’m excited to do that.”

Houston (9-7), Indianapolis and Jacksonville all won Sunday to leave the three teams with identical records in the AFC South and keep the Texans in contention for both the division title and a playoff spot.

Stroud threw for 213 yards and a touchdown in his return from a concussion Sunday and a victory next week at Indianapolis will secure a playoff berth a year after Houston won just three games.

“He raises everyone’s level of confidence because everyone knows the type of player that he is,” coach DeMeco Ryans said. “He’s a big-time playmaker and he continues to show it week after week. We’re all excited to have C.J. back because he’s a really great player.”

Stroud hadn’t played since hitting the back of his head hard on the turf in a loss to the Jets on Dec. 10. He picked up right where he left off before the injury, moving the offense effectively and throwing his 21st touchdown pass of the season in the second quarter.

“It was a blessing this week to get back,” he said. “I felt like I got back to my normal self pretty fast.”

The Texans had a 17-point lead at halftime with some help from a touchdown on defense after Sheldon Rankins returned a fumble by rookie quarterback Will Levis for a score in the second quarter.

Levis injured his foot on the play and Ryan Tannehill took over. He threw for 168 yards but couldn’t get the Titans in the end zone as Tennessee (5-11) fell to Houston for the second time in three weeks.

“We've just got to do better of doing our job all around,” Tannehill said. “If it’s blocking, then blocking. If it’s catching, catching. If it’s throwing, throwing. Whatever the case may be, we just got to do a better job of doing our job.”

Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel said he doesn't think the injury to Levis is “too serious” but that he'd know more Monday.

The Texans pushed the lead to 23-3 on a field goal in the third quarter. The Titans had a chance to cut the lead after that, but they came up empty at the end of a 17-play drive when Tannehill’s pass on fourth-and-3 from the 3 was incomplete.

Houston made it 26-3 on a 51-yard field goal with about 5½ minutes to go.

The Titans had Houston stopped at its 11-yard line late in the first quarter, but Caleb Murphy was flagged for running into the kicker to give the Texans a first down.

Houston capped a 13-play, 89-yard drive with a 12-yard reception by Brevin Jordan to make it 10-0 with about 10 minutes left in the second.

On the next play, Levis lost the ball on a strip-sack by Jerry Hughes. Then Rankins, a 287-pound defensive tackle s cooped it up and returned it 13 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 17-0.

It was the first NFL touchdown for Rankins, who returned a fumble for a score as a senior at Louisville in 2015.

“As a defensive lineman ... you prepare for them, but you just never really think they’re going to be there,” he said.

Ka’imi Fairbairn's 38-yard field goal made it 20-0 with about four minutes left in the first half.

Tennessee got its only points on a 53-yard field goal by Nick Folk as time expired in the second quarter.

Houston defensive end Will Anderson, the third overall pick in the draft, h ad sacks on consecutive plays near the end of the second quarter in his return after missing two games with an ankle injury.

“He’s an impact player, and you see it instantly,” Ryans said. “We missed him. You see the production, you see the type of plays he can make for us.”

The Texans finished with six sacks after getting seven in the first meeting with the Titans.

“We’ve got to do a better job of protecting whoever is back there throwing the football,” Vrabel said.

Former Texans star DeAndre Hopkins had seven receptions for 72 yards for the Titans. Derrick Henry had 12 carries for 42 yards after being limited to 9 yards on 16 carries by the Texans two weeks ago.

INJURIES

Titans OL Daniel Brunskill injured his ankle in the first half. … WR Colton Dowell left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury. … Houston LT Laremy Tunsil injured his groin in the second quarter. … WR Noah Brown injured a hip in the second quarter. … WR Robert Woods left in the fourth quarter with a hip injury.

Excited doesn't quite capture the emotion Houston native GiGi Lewis feels about coming through her hometown in the national tour of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, opening January 2 at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.

"I'm trying to keep it down because I'm over here losing it," she laughs. "I'm like a kid in a candy store!"

The musical tells the story of Tina Turner, the iconic superstar known for her big voice, big presence, and big drama in her relationship with husband Ike Turner. Across her more than 50-year career, she sold more than 100 million records worldwide, shattered records and barriers, won 12 Grammy Awards, was the first Black woman to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone, and acted in Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome, among many other accomplishments.

Tina features a slew of her hits across the decades, and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, garnering one for Adrienne Warren for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. Jesse Green of the New York Times wrote of the show, "I’ve rarely heard an audience with this mighty a roar.” The Daily Beast said of the musical, "Be prepared to be ecstatically blown away. It’s a miracle the roof hasn’t taken flight to space.”

From H-Town to the Big Apple

Lewis' road to the national tour isn't the typical story of a kid who gets bit by the theater bug, studies it in college, then hoofs off to the Big Apple, looking to land on Broadway. Neither Aldine High School, from which she graduated, nor Prairie View A&M University, where she spent three years, had musical theater programs.

"But I had incredible music teachers and drama teachers," she tells CultureMap. "And we put on small choir productions for other students. That began to create a path to where I am today."

She also credits her parents for helping to teach her the craft of singing, especially her dad. From the age of about 5 or 6, she says, her father, a singer himself and a preacher, would sit down and sing to her all the time. She began mimicking him, and he would offer her tips.

"I'd sing in the choir at church, then come home and sing with my dad," she recalls. "I learned everything, music-wise, from my dad."

After high school, while she was a student at Prairie View A&M, she began singing in gigs around Houston, going back and forth between Prairie View and H-Town, with occasional trips to Dallas and other cities, even being part of the cast of Motown and More for a couple of years at Miller Outdoor Theatre. The experience, she says in hindsight, helped open her to the idea that being a professional singer was really what she wanted, along with helping her get used to the idea of being in the public eye.

She's on a boat!

It would take a cruise to really change her life. She and her cousin and an aunt took a Carnival trip sailing out of Galveston, and there was a talent show on the ship. Her cousin signed her up.

"Girl, what are you doing?" she says she told her. "That's crazy."

But she got up there and sang anyway, performing "I Will Always Love You." Her cousin recorded it and posted it to her social media — and Royal Caribbean came calling, asking her to audition.

"I'm just thinking, what in the world? I'm in my late 20s. I did a GoFundMe that paid for my travel to Miami."

She landed the gig, and set sail with Royal Caribbean in 2016. She'd work for the company for seven years, taking on roles such as Pearl in Hairspray, and performing in Dare to Dream, a musical about the Wright Brothers, along with Las Vegas-style shows. It was an opportunity for her to explore the world and hone her craft. While performing in Hairspray at sea, she learned about auditions for Tina. There was one problem: she was in Spain and the auditions were in New York. Across a frantic 24 hours, she flew back to the States and nailed the audition.

Tina's true BFF

Lewis hit the road with Tina in October, taking on the roles of Aline, Tina's sister and confidant; an Ikette; and being part of the ensemble. She also understudies the role of Tina.

"Tina," she exclaims. "Tina. Tina. Tina. What an incredible honor this is. I was a fan before I got here. I still pinch myself."

Juggling the roles she has might seem daunting, but Lewis loves the challenge. She describes Aline as one of Turner's "best friends. She had such a huge role in her life. She was the manager of the Ikettes. She wrote songs for Ike and Tina. In the show, she serves as someone Tina can confide in. She'd loud. She's bold. She's funny."

Those are traits Lewis says she recognizes in herself.

A true Houston star

Right now, she's having a blast touring the country. On a stop in St. Louis, the cast of the show got to visit the school Tina Turner attended. When she isn't performing, she seeks out significant places in Black history in each city the tour rolls through. And she's learned a great deal about life on the road.

"It's a big difference from life on the ships!" she says, clearly making fun of herself. "I'm carrying my own suitcases now. Every Monday, I'm in line at the airport."

But she wouldn't have it any other way. And she's elated for her hometown friends and family to see what she does.

"They've seen me sing, and they've seen me dance and act, but never all three at once," she explains. "I just feel so supported from the people who've reached out and said they're coming. My teachers. My principal. My dream was always to be on that big stage, so having people me doing what I always said I'd do — that makes me teary-eyed."

The museum’s mission is to preserve and educate the public about aircraft dating back to World War II. While many of its exhibits are permanent, the museum is also a revolving living history, with new features, and new pieces and planes constantly added to its collection.

"Our goal is to engage visitors and young people about the significance of aviation history and to spark wonder about the future of aviation." said Anna Hawley, the museum's chief operating officer. "The new experiences we have added to the museum are really fun and create a multigenerational museum experience for everyone."

Here are a few must-see exhibits currently housed at the Lone Star Flight Museum.

Glacier Girl

This World War II plane is a twin-boom P-38 Lightning and a relic of wartime history with a singular story of its own.

The plane currently on display at the museum lay buried under 268 feet of arctic ice for 50 years after crash landing during a flight over Greenland in 1942 during World War II.

Glacier Girl is the only survivor of an entire squadron of P-38s and B-17s that accompanied it on that flight mission. Its stay at the Lone Star Flight Museum marks the first time the aircraft has been exhibited as an artifact of living aviation history.

The warbird was finally unearthed during an expedition by the Greenland Expedition Society in 1992.

The team recovered the plane by pulling pieces out one by one, including its three-ton, 17-foot-long fuselage, but it would take a decade to completely reconstruct the aircraft to its original form.

The Glacier Girl will be on display through the end of January. On Jan. 11, the museum will host an event featuring a Q&A session with Bob Cardin, the team leader during the rescue expedition.

Pitts Special S-1

Visitors entering the museum will now be greeted by the hard-to-miss red spectacle of a Pitts Special S-1 suspended above the museum’s entrance.

Designed in 1944, the biplane is a homebuilt aircraft kit, and known primarily for its acrobatic agility during airshows and competitions. Fittingly, it hangs inverted with its nose up to represent its place in aviation history.

The plane on display at the Lone Star Flight Museum is owned by Terry Barker of Keller, Texas. He and his father-in-law, John Abitz, built the aircraft between 1984 and 2005.

According to Hawley, the Lone Star Flight Museum had been searching for a unique welcoming piece of aviation history to greet visitors and – with its bright red exterior - found it in the Pitts Special S-1.

Space Gallery

The museum debuted Space Gallery in early 2023, which provides visitors a better understanding of what it was like for astronauts on the Space Shuttle to train, live and work while in space.

The exhibit showcases NASA artifacts such as the NASA Crew Compartment Trainer-2, EVA Airlock System, the Space Shuttle Motion Base Simulator, and a Rover and Humanoid.

Space Gallery also expands the museum’s educational content by showing how space exploration has its roots in conventional aircraft.

Many if not most of the early astronauts were pilots and had served in the military. The Space Gallery connects aviation history to space exploration by highlighting that evolution.

The gallery includes exhibits of astronaut sleeping bags, medical kits, shuttle tools and other artifacts that show what life in space is life for astronauts.

Space Gallery is a permanent exhibit.

Bill Bussey’s Hot Air Balloon

Making its debut at the museum in the fall of 2023, the Frigid Skyquest V is a hot air balloon from the collection of legendary hot air balloon racing pilot, Bill Bussey.

Bussey is one of the most successful hot air pilots and has held several world records, including for time in the air and distance. He was inducted into the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame in 2007 and the United States Ballooning Hall of Fame.

In 1986, Bussey launched at 7:05 a.m. from his hometown of Longview, Texas, and landed at 11:47 a.m. near Lake Charles, Louisiana — a distance of 179 miles for an AX5 world distance record, breaking the previous record of 136.77 miles.

The Frigid Skyquest V is one of Bussey’s world-record holding balloons.

This season, the Colts have overcome a 3-5 start to the season, a flurry of injuries and roster turnover to be one win away from securing a playoff spot.

While the new year is the time for people to determine their resolutions and assess their goals for the next 12 months, it is also an opportunity to look back at the areas of growth one had the previous year.

In the case of the Colts, those 2023 lessons will be especially important as they prepare for this Saturday's pivotal game against the Houston Texans.

If they win this game, they will be back in the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Then, if the Jacksonville Jaguars lose to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon, the Colts will clinch their first AFC South title since 2014.

If they lose, their season is over.

Though the Colts have already proven that they can beat the Texans, doing so in Week 2 with a convincing 31-20 outing, that game was 107 days ago.

In that time, both teams have grown from young upstarts led by first-year head coaches to legitimate playoff contenders.

"Yeah, they're [Houston] completely different," head coach Steichen said. "Obviously, I mentioned this early on in the season – you kind of find out about who you are in the middle of the season. Teams change, teams kind of find their identity on who they are. Houston is playing really good football right now and it's going to be a heck of a challenge for us come Saturday night."

After starting the season 0-2, the Texans have gone 9-5 in their next 14 games. Quarterback C.J. Stroud has established himself as one of the top rookies in the NFL and is ninth in the league with 3,844 passing yards.

Defensively, they boast one of the best young cores in the NFL. Their edge-rushing duo of Jonathan Greenard and Will Anderson Jr. have combined for 19.5 sacks. Second-year cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.'s five interceptions are tied for the fourth most of any player.

As for the Colts, they've been on an impressive stretch as well. After losing three straight games and sitting at 3-5 in Week 8, they have won six of their next nine games.

"It speaks to the resiliency," quarterback Gardner Minshew II said. "I think everybody gets - you can kind of ride the wave a little bit in this league. I think the narratives get blown out of proportion week after week. But, you just got to trust what you do, trust how you prepare and I think we've done a good job of that."

After losing rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson to a right shoulder injury in Week 5, the team could have wilted and faded into the background. Instead, Minshew stepped up in his absence and has admirably led the team each week.

"I think, I'm not sure if this is right or wrong, but he gives a team hope," defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said. "When he plays and he goes in there and makes plays, it's like, 'Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah – we have a chance.' When he first came in it's not, 'We lost our quarterback. Oh boy, this is going to be a struggle.' When he came in, he made plays and I think it gave the team that hope that, 'Wait a minute, we have a chance here now with this guy. He makes plays. He can get us out of difficult situations and something good truly is going to happen when he is in there."

Even with injuries keeping playmakers like Jonathan Taylor, Zack Moss and Michael Pittman Jr. off the field for varying amounts of time, the offense still has been one of the NFL's most consistent. With an average of 23.6 points per game, they rank 10th in the NFL and have the highest scoring output of any AFC South team.

On the opposite side of the ball, the defense has made historic strides this season. With 47 sacks through 16 weeks, the team set a new franchise record in the category.

That fact is all the more impressive considering the amount of personnel turnover they've undergone since Week 1. Though injuries in their secondary have forced young players like Jaylon Jones, JuJu Brents and Nick Cross into the fire, the biggest change was the team's decision to waive former All-Pro linebacker Shaquille Leonard in November.

During these ever-evolving times, linebacker Zaire Franklin said this is when he and the other leaders of the unit have had to step up the most.

"For us, we always just trust each other," Franklin said. "I feel like for us, it's just next man up. That's kind of what it's felt like and like I said, we just had great leadership from DeForest [Buckner] and Grove, Kenny and myself. I feel like no matter what's really happened, whether it's guys coming out, guys leaving the building, new guys coming in and we're depending on them - everybody [has] just taken ownership of their position group, taking ownership of the defense."

So, when thinking back on all the Colts have gone through over the past three and a half months, Steichen said the biggest lesson the team has learned is how to persevere through the difficult times.

"You kind of build, you gel, the chemistry – like I said, it always starts in the middle of the season," Steichen said. "You kind of find out who you are – the chemistry, the offensive chemistry, defensive chemistry, communication. Obviously, you always want that stuff to keep rising up. I think that's what our guys have done to put ourselves in the position that we are in right now. So, just the growth from everybody – coaches, players – has been awesome."

HOUSTON — It all comes down to Week 18 for the Houston Texans and their playoff hopes.

The Texans head to Indianapolis to face their AFC South division-rival Colts in their first primetime game this season. The Texans cap off a doubleheader with kickoff set for 7:15 p.m. Houston time.

Houston (9-7), Indianapolis, and Jacksonville all won Sunday to leave the three teams with identical records in the AFC South. That keeps the Texans in contention for both the division title and a playoff spot.

A victory at Indianapolis will guarantee the Texans, who won just three games last season, their first postseason berth since the 2019 season.

Jacksonville holds the tiebreaker over Houston so the Jags would clinch the AFC South Division title with a win. However, a Jags' loss would mean that the winner of the Texans-Colts would be the division champ.

The division champion would host a first-round game.

If the Texans win, they could get a playoff seed as high as No. 6 if the Buffalo Bills were to lose to Miami.

NFL Week 18 schedule

The final Week 18 schedule (all times below are Central):

Looking back at the Houston Texans' playoff history

The Texans have turned things around this season behind first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans and rookie QB CJ Stroud. With the improvement, we've noticed people searching Google for the Texans' playoff history. So here you go.

The Texans have been to the playoffs in six of their previous 21 seasons in the league. Their overall playoff record is 4-6. Houston has never won a playoff game beyond the wild card round.

The Houston Texans came into the league in 2002 and it was more than nine years later that they got their first taste of the postseason.

Texans playoffs in 2011 season

It was a wild card matchup that they won against Cincinnati. You may remember that game featured JJ Watt picking off former Katy Tiger Andy Dalton for a pick six. Houston won, 31-10, but were knocked out in the divisional round by the Baltimore Ravens.

Texans playoffs in 2012 season

Houston was back the following year, again beating the Bengals in the wild card round before falling to Tom Brady and the Patriots in the divisional round, 41-28.

Texans playoffs in 2015 season

They wouldn’t return again until 2015, but that year was one and done, losing in the wild card round to the Chiefs, getting shut out 30-0.

Texans playoffs in 2016 season

They were back in 2016, beating the Raiders, 27-14, in the wild card round, but fell in the divisional round to the Patriots again, 34-16.

Texans playoffs in 2018 season

They would miss the postseason in 2017 but were back in 2018 in a wild card matchup with their division rival, the Colts. Indy took that one, 21-7, ending Houston’s season.

Texans playoffs in 2019 season

Finally, the Texans last playoff appearance in the 2019 season. They beat Buffalo overtime in the wild card round, 22-19, but fell to Kansas City in the divisional round. In that game against the Chiefs, Houston jumped out to a 24-0 lead, but were outscored 51-7 the rest of the way.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- For months, building debris has piled up where a former business once stood on West Bellfort Avenue.

Viewers reached out to ABC13 because they said it's a hazard for those who live near the area.

According to neighbors, the site was once home to an abandoned business before it was demolished in November, and now all of the debris has been sitting out in the open for months.

"An eye sore, of course, a hazard," community member Elizabeth Lutz said. "The construction vehicles stayed there for a couple of days, so we thought maybe the trash bins were going to come and they were going to clean it up, but that never happened."

If you've driven along West Bellfort Avenue and South Post Oak Frontage Road lately, you may have noticed the piles of debris from what used to be a daiquiri business.

Lutz and other neighbors told ABC13 this has become a safety concern. At the site, ABC13 crews could see long pieces of rebar, broken glass, pieces of concrete, and trash.

The debris site is also in the heart of a school zone.

"There are other kids who walk to the middle school down the street, and so it's very likely that they can get hurt," Lutz said.

There's no fencing around the debris sight, and no cleanup has happened since it was initially demolished.

Eyewitness News has learned through city representatives that the property owners demolished the building illegally.

"There were absolutely no permits issued for demolition of this property," Councilwoman Abbie Kaman said.

Kaman said the property has now been cited multiple times for not following the law.

The Harris County Appraisal District lists Kormex Foods as the owner of the site.

However, Public Works representatives said through their investigation, they have found that Kormex Foods no longer owns this property.

Public Works is working to find out who the property owner is, why the building was demolished, and who did it.

"If there's anything we can do on the city side to get some fencing up. Again, it's the property owner's responsibility, and that's why citations are issued when that doesn't happen, but at this point, we need to see some type of resolution," Kaman said.

Kaman said she's working with Public Works and the Department of Neighborhoods to put fences up as soon as possible.

Kelvin Sampson, for understandable reasons considering his program was upgrading conferences, did not get too aggressive with the non-league portion of Houston's schedule this season — evidence being that the Cougars' non-league schedule ranks 165th nationally, according to the NET. Consequently, it took Houston a little longer than others to build a body of work that matched its strong computer numbers, which is how I ended up with as many as five schools ahead of the Cougars in the CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings earlier this month, because, as recently as 11 days ago, Houston was merely 3-2 in Quadrant 1 and coming off of back-to-back losses to Iowa State and TCU.

Fast-forward to the present, and four of the five teams I placed ahead of Houston after the Cougars lost at TCU haven't lost since — and that's the simplest explanation for why Houston was No. 5 in Saturday morning's Top 25 And 1. But if you follow these rankings closely, you likely know that I value resumes over pretty much everything else at this point in the season, and even if there might've been four or even five teams with better resumes than Houston 11 days ago, such is clearly no longer the case after the Cougars extended their winning streak to four games Saturday with a 74-52 victory over Kansas State.

"They may be the best defensive team I've ever seen," said Kansas State coach Jerome Tang. "It's just hard to find shots."

For what it's worth, the Cougars do have the top-rated defense in the country, according to BartTorvik.com. Specifically, they have the best defensive 2-point field goal percentage (40.3), the best block percentage (19.2) and the best steal percentage (16.2) in the sport.

As for the resume, Houston's four-game winning streak features two Quadrant 1 wins (over Texas Tech and BYU) and two Quadrant 2 wins (over UCF and Kansas State) that have pushed the Cougars to 6-2 in Quadrant 1 and 2-0 in Quadrant 2 -- or 8-2 in the first two quadrants with zero losses outside of Quadrant 1. The increased strength of that body of work is why I've jumped Houston above North Carolina and Tennessee to No. 3 in Sunday morning's updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings, where Purdue remains No. 1 for the 18th consecutive morning.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- This week, we're going from sunny to stormy, but you'll get to enjoy a couple more days of sunshine before the thick clouds and storms return early in the weekend.

Temperatures Tuesday morning will only dip into the mid 40s as cirrus clouds blanket the sky. Plenty of sunshine will filter through the cirrus clouds on Tuesday, warming temperatures into the low 70s Tuesday afternoon.

Plenty of sunshine will still break through the clouds through Wednesday and maybe even Thursday. By Friday, thicker clouds lower to the ground will return to block out more sunshine.

At this time, our Houston forecast is freeze-free over the next 10 days, but we're seeing some long-range signals that freezing weather may return around the middle of February.

It looks like Thursday will be the earliest we'll get any rain to show up again on our 13 Alert Radar network, and even then it's just a 10% chance of showers. The same is true for Friday, with a 30% chance for showers, but by Saturday, thunderstorms will return, and rain chances will rise up to 70%.

That looks unlikely for now. This weather system will not stall out like the one from last week, so we get one day with a high rain chance, and then things will clear out. Rain totals are expected to generally fall in the 1-2" range. Severe weather is unlikely but cannot be 100% ruled out at this time.

One of Houston’s most popular wine bars has added its own private label bottles to its extensive inventory. Dubbed Patina, the brand will serve as an extension of Midtown favorite13 Celsius’s mission to encourage Houstonians to drink better wine.

True to its name, each label will feature artwork inspired by 13 Celsius’s historic building in the heart of Midtown. For general manager Adele Corrigan and owner Ian Rosenberg, sourcing unique vintages seemed like a good way to expand 13 Celsius’s reach without opening a second location.

“This idea was born out of ongoing discussions for the past 10 years of whether or not to open a second location, and how to bring 13 to a broader range of people,” Corrigan tells CultureMap. “We decided a creative option to make 13 more accessible would be to do private label selections. That way Houston wine lovers have a new option — whether they be new to 13 C, former regulars who have moved away, or people who are already fans and want to enjoy 13 from the comfort of their home. They can also gift their favorite wine bar to friends and colleagues.”

Corrigan and Rosenberg are working with a local importer to handle Patina’s logistics. For their first release, they selected a wine made with Barbera grapes from Piedmont in northern Italy. The sommelier tasted the wine during a visit to Italy in 2023 and wanted to share it with Houstonians.

Branded Patina “Due Gelsi,” it’s described as a “medium-to-full-bodied red wine with red fruit notes, a slightly earthy character, firm tannins, and a balanced finish.” Currently available for $13 by-the-glass or $47 for a bottle, it debuted on the list in time for the wine bar’s 17th anniversary on New Year’s Eve.

“It was a wine that works with or without food and is something I would want to drink every day,” Corrigan explains. “Knowing our customers’ palates, I knew with the first taste, our guests would make the connection between the wine and how it personifies the old world character of our space.”

Future releases will focus on other European wines that aren’t currently available in Texas. Expect more details to be made available soon.
