Marietta Borough leaders in Lancaster County have launched a mass notification system to provide residents with real-time updates on local news and events.
MARIETTA, Pa. —
Marietta Borough leaders in Lancaster County have introduced a mass notification system to keep residents informed about weather, road closures, power outages, garbage delays, and community events.
Over the past week, borough leaders distributed door hangers throughout the community to encourage residents to sign up for the system.
Deborah Schmitt, a Marietta resident since 2000, shared her excitement about the new system.
"I love this town," Schmitt said. "It's very historic, and it's a beautiful little town."
Schmitt added, "I'm a small-town girl, so I really like that."
She received a pamphlet from borough leaders promoting Savvy Citizen, the notification system.
Scott Noden, chair of public health and safety for Marietta Borough, explained the motivation behind the initiative.
"I just want to keep the residents informed," Noden said.
Noden, a lifelong Marietta resident, said improving communication with the community has been a personal priority.
"One thing I felt like a lot of municipalities lack in is communicating back to their residents," Noden said. "So it was close to my heart to make sure that we're getting information out to our community members."
Residents can download an app to receive push alerts or sign up online to receive notifications via phone or email.
"So it sounds like it's pretty easy," Schmitt said.
Noden noted that around 1,000 residents have already signed up for the system, and he expects more to join as awareness spreads.
