Home Care In Southport, NC

Home Care Southport, NC

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Stede Bonnet Monument gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Southport, NC is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

“Watching your parents age is an emotional experience. My mother has suffered from emphysema since the early 2000s and was diagnosed with dementia in 2018. We've worked with many companies to provide care for her and companionship. Since 2020, as my mother has significantly declined, we've had to make the decision to move her into a facility. For the past three years, Always Best, and more specifically Nancy Newcomer, has provided consistent and quality care for our family. Nancy is always on time, caring, and reliable. We've experienced companies with high turnover and feel blessed to have had Nancy's support for three years. She doesn’t do this solely for a paycheck but also checks on my dad on her days off and genuinely cares. I'd highly recommend this company to help care for your aging loved ones.”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Southport, NC?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Mr. P's Bistro or visit Josiah Martin, Historical Marker, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Southport, NC, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your NC's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Southport, NC understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Southport, NC

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Southport, NC

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • TerraBella Southport
  • Ocean Trail Convalescent Center
  • Southport Health & Rehabilitation Center
  • THE BRUNSWICK CENTER AT SOUTHPORT
  • Babson Carol

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. Southport offers breathtaking coastal views, iconic film locations, and a vibrant dining and shopping experience, all complimented by the warm hospitality of its residents, according to World Atlas’ list of the seven friendliest towns in North Carolina.

Strolling through downtown Southport on the weekend, you can find many residents leisurely walking their dogs, taking in the views from the pier, or engaging in conversations with their neighbors and friends.

During the summer months, the city “comes alive...as vacationers flock to the area because of its seaside atmosphere and welcoming energy,” reads the World Atlas article.

“Tourism is our greatest industry and our city is as welcoming as a Hallmark movie where everyone is treated like family and friends,” Mayor Joseph P. Hatem said, describing the local community. “If you walk through our unique neighborhoods, you will always be greeted with a friendly hello,” he added.

A popular destination for retirees, Southport is currently populated with roughly 4,000 residents, a majority of whom are over the age of 60, according to 2021 census data.

“Southern hospitality, a rich history, natural beauty, warm weather, and year-round activities and events, are just a few of the reasons that many are happy to call the area home,” according to the city of Southport residents webpage.

Hatem emphasized the role that local businesses play in defining Southport’s warm and welcoming charm.

“Every local business contributes to the town's friendly atmosphere,” Hatem said. Many of the small businesses in the city are family-owned and operated, an asset that adds to the town’s appeal, according to Hatem.

Mr. P’s Restaurant, Moore Street Oyster Bar, Southport Water Tours, Downtown Southport Inc., and the N.C. Maritime Museum were among the long list of local businesses that Hatem cited as adding to the city’s character and feel.

Sitting atop the northwest bank of the Cape Fear river, Southport is home to a variety of community events and traditions, such as the annual North Carolina Fourth of July Festival. Other notable events include the Easter Spring Festival, the Southport Wooden Boat Show, the Christmas Tour of Homes, and numerous vintage car shows, according to the mayor.

Hatem referred to Southport as a “definite destination as you travel in North Carolina.”

“Southport is a spiritual, caring, loving, welcoming, and festive community,” Hatem said. “These are some of the many reasons people want to live here and continue to move here,” he added.

World Atlas includes the following cities alongside Southport upon their list of the seven friendliest towns statewide:

Brunswick County could get a second Biscuitville location.

Earlier this year, the company announced the county would get its first Biscuitville on Main Street in Shallotte.

Here’s what we know.

The second restaurant would be near Southport.

A Biscuitville is slated for a parcel in the River Run Shopping Center between Southport and Oak Island.

A company with ties to Biscuitville purchased the property.

According to online documents obtained from the Brunswick County Register of Deeds website, the property at 5059 Southport-Supply Road was sold last month to BV 232 LLC. Online records from the North Carolina Secretary of State website shows Maurice N. Jennings Jr. is the limited liability company’s registered agent, and the address is 1414 Yanceyville Street, Suite 300, Greensboro, N.C.-- the same as the home office for Biscuitville.

Documents specifically mention operation of a Biscuitville restaurant.

Documents from Brunswick County Register of Deeds show the property's previous owner, Bobby Ray Miller, desired to sell the property to Biscuitville. But there was initially some dispute among the owners of the parcels in River Run Shopping Center about whether food service could operate on the site due to restrictive covenants set forth by the original developer. An amendment was filed to those covenants and it states “A Biscuitville may operate on this property." Deed documents filed on the same date show the property was conveyed to BV 232 LLC, an affiliate of Biscuitville.

The site has been home to many restaurants over the years.

The site slated for Biscuitville is a vacant lot next to the McDonald’s. The site was once home to a building that housed several different restaurants over the years, including a Western Sizzlin’, a Golden Corral, and Atlantic Seafood and Steaks. In the last few years, the building was torn down.

This area has seen several new businesses in recent months.

The River Run Shopping Center has seen some revitalization in recent years with a Big Lots moving into a vacant building that previously housed the Food Lion grocery store. Other recent additions include Southport Suzie’s, a frozen yogurt bar operating in a storefront that once houses a bank, and a Cookout, which is being constructed on the former Pizza Hut site.

There is no word yet on when construction will begin.

The StarNews reached out to Biscuitville's press office for comment but had not heard back by press time.

These two offseason locations exist here in the local area, ready to provide winter visitors with a variety of "land-based adventures and cultural attractions," all with the perks of lessened traffic and smaller crowds, according to Visit NC.

What else sets these beach towns apart?

Southport

Southport ranked No. 3 on the travel webpage's list.

Widely known as the location for the cinematic-adaption of the Nicholas Sparks novel "Safe Haven," this town's beauty is already a well-established allure.

In addition, Visit NC titles Southport a "premier paddling destination," thanks to its location "straddling the Cape Fear River, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic Ocean."

The webpage urges visitors to make a trip to the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport, indulge in paddling tour with the Adventure Kayak Company, and explore Bald Head Island, which is only two miles offshore of Southport.

Bald Head Island is home to the state's "largest swath of maritime forest" and the oldest lighthouse, known as Old Baldy, according to the Visit NC list.

Wrightsville Beach

While summer crowds dissipate in the colder months, "the town's charm remains," Visit NC writes.

For this reason, Wrightsville Beach ranked No. 5 on the travel webpage's list

Explore the coastline through paddling or explore buffered inland waterways, such as Town Creek or Black River, Visit NC suggests.

Visit NC also highlights Wrightsville Beach's proximity to downtown Wilmington, which is "loaded with enticing cultural attractions," according to the webpage.

The Cameron Art Musuem, Wilmington Railroad Musuem, and Burgwin-Wright House are listed as must-see attractions.

Wilmington's historical district is highlighted as the largest in the state.

The annual Cucalorus Film Festival highlights Wilmington's creative side, according to Visit NC.

Other North Carolina Offseason Beaches

Three other North Carolina beach towns made the Visit NC list.

Manteo, Beaufort and Nags Head all remain prime vacation locations even throughout the winter months, according to Visit NC.

The travel webpage provides more details about the attractions of each of these beach town locations here.

The owners of Southport Gourmet and Sushi Bar restaurant have been working for months on a new addition to the food scene in Brunswick County. They also wanted to bring something unique to the area. Now, Yummy House held its official grand opening on Dec. 5 at 1616 N. Howe St.

Here’s what you need to know to check it out.

A sushi beginning

Damon Pan and Selina Lin have been offering diners in the Southport area a selection of sushi and rolls, as well as a menu of tempura, noodles, fried rice and hibachi. But Lin said they knew that there was more that they could do. With that in mind, they’ve been working on Yummy House, which adds an extensive dim sum menu. A few other Wilmington-area Asian restaurants, like Double Happiness and The Bento Box, offer some, too.

"But I think for this kind of thing, the closest would be in Raleigh,” Lin said.

Dim sum and more

Traditionally, dim sum is a meal of small plates and snacks in Chinese culture. It’s originated in tea houses and is usually enjoyed in the morning and early afternoon. The Yummy House menu posted on their door lists 26 appetizers and dim sum options, complete with photos. Options range from Shanghai dumplings and Korean seafood pancake to pork buns and fried mantou.

In addition to the dim sum menu, Yummy House will offer a selection of classic Asian dishes, such as Orange Beef, Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles and fried rice.

When to try

Eventually, after the opening week, Yummy House is planning to open at 7 a.m. daily. The dim sum menu and pho will be served until 11 a.m. and the lunch and dinner menu will be available after. They are scheduled to be open Tuesday through Sunday, closing at 9 p.m. or at 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

SOUTHPORT — Lifelong Southport resident Mike Barbee is taking the step to challenge current Southport Mayor Joe Pat Hatem and current council member Rich Alt, also running for mayor, in the upcoming election.

It won’t be Barbee’s first foray into politics. He was elected Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor for Brunswick Water and Soil Conservation District in 2022.

“It has been an honor to serve the people and communities of the district,” he wrote to Port City Daily. “I was just nominated, last month, to be appointed Vice-Chair of Area 6 of BCSWCD; a position, that I will take in January of 2024.”

PCD asked candidates to address issues pertinent to their municipalities, in this case, PFAS, customer growth and keeping rates from rising. Laub’s answers are included in full; responses are edited only for grammar, spelling and clarity.

The paywall has been dropped on candidate questionnaires to help voters make informed decisions ahead of Election Day.

To prepare, here are a few dates for readers to keep in mind:

In Brunswick County, voters can cast ballots early at the Brunswick County Cooperative Extension (in lieu of the Board of Elections) at 25 Referendum Drive, Building N, in Bolivia.

Once early voting closes, voters will need to go to the location listed on their registration cards, verified here.

To see a sample ballot for the upcoming election, fill in voter registration info here.

A photo ID is required to cast a ballot in 2023; more information can be found on the state board of elections website.

The candidate’s opinions and statements are not a reflection of Port City Daily.

Port City Daily (PCD): Why run for the board of aldermen or mayor now?

Mike Barbee (MB): I am running for Mayor of Southport now because my fellow townspeople deserve a good, honest, hardworking mayor that will provide needed results for taxpayers. I don’t like the way my hometown is being developed and operated by the current town council and mayor. All I hear are complaints about the mayor, town council, and planning board by my neighbors, friends and family.

The other candidates for mayor are already a part of the current town council and will only continue to destroy the town. I was raised from birth in Southport, and I will work to ensure that the people of my hometown can prosper and can continue to enjoy its charm and natural beauty.

PCD: Name three issues you think are most affecting the city currently and describe how you would work toward tackling them.

MB: Three issues that are most affecting the city currently are infrastructure (roads, sewer/water system, traffic, parking), unsustainable development (loss of green space and biodiversity due to development such as Indigo phase two), and funding.

I will make it priority to find funding for town infrastructure projects through grants, loans, and cost share programs.

I will fix the parking issue downtown by adding more parking spaces and consider paid parking at the waterfront, while reforming other parking. We will stop the destruction of our Franklin Square park by moving all festival and farmers market activities to Bay Street and side streets by waterfront. Traffic will be better directed under my mayorship.

Funding is one of the overarching issues and I will work to earn more revenue for the city without raising taxes.

PCD: Do you think the city should make efforts to provide a wider range of housing options in Southport, including affordable housing? How so?

MB: I think the city should definitely make efforts to provide a wider range of housing options in Southport. It’s even difficult to find employees in the service industry in town partly because housing prices are so high in town.

That being said, building more houses in town and destroying forests and wildlife to provide more affordable housing is not the answer! Perhaps, we should retrofit our current urban sprawl to accommodate people looking for more affordable housing.

PCD: Homelessness has come up as a major focus from citizens and leaders of Southport. How do you think the city should respond to homelessness?

MB: The increased homelessness in Southport, and everywhere, really, is the direct result of the increased housing costs and also untreated mental health issues and addiction. Honestly, the solution to the homeless problem is a difficult one that needs to be discussed openly and with mental health professionals and people that know the legalities of what can be done. I do think a homeless shelter that provides mental health outreach and life assistance would be very beneficial to have in town.

PCD: As evidence shows, climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of storms and hurricanes, along with sea level rise. What should the city do to protect residents, property and infrastructure?

MB: Climate change is inevitable and so is sea rise. Protecting our waterfront from erosion can be done utilizing bulkheads and wave breaks; however, property is going to be damaged regardless as far as the waterfront restaurants and homes are concerned.

When Hurricane Hazel hit last century it destroyed all but three buildings on Oak Island, and that will happen again; it’s just a matter of time. We can reform our systems for managing floodwaters and runoff to mitigate damage to property from storms and sea rise.

PCD: How should Southport address its infrastructure needs in the face of aging utilities and the county’s growth?

MB: The crumbling infrastructure of the town is long overdue for an overhaul. The sewer issue is being worked through currently with the county as far as I know, with regards to capacity. As far as the condition of our sewer and water lines, these are top priority for me. I’ve been suffering the poor quality water in this town most of my life and I don’t want my daughter to suffer the same. The roads are atrocious in town and need to be repaired. Parking needs to be reformed along the main streets. We need to find funding solutions for these issues without raising taxes.

PCD: Brunswick County is the fastest growing in the state; how should Southport’s leadership approach future development, balancing economics with quality of life?

MB: As a graduate in sustainable development, I must assure you that the only way for Southport’s leadership to approach future development to balance economics and quality of life, is to keep future generations in mind. We need to preserve the charm and natural beauty of our town’s landscape as well as being conscious of our natural resource use.
