After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

“I am a past client of this provider Always Best Care provided excellent, diligent, responsive and caring home health assistance to my mother who was recovering from an unexpected surgery. They were able to assist on incredibly short notice and made a difficult situation for our family much better. lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local The Bridge Tender or visit BurgwinWright House and Gardens, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Wrightsville Beach, NC, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your NC's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Wrightsville Beach, NC understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Wrightsville Beach, NC

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Wrightsville Beach, NC

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Bradley Creek Health Center at Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall
  • Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall
  • Morningside of Wilmington
  • Coastal Cove of Wilmington
  • Cedar Cove Assisted Living And Memory Care

Summer at Wrightsville Beach provides one of the best experiences for seeing beach-nesting birds — but visitors may want to take the opportunity soon. Three unique species of bird will begin to migrate south with the onset of fall, one of which will go as far as Argentina.

Populations of least tern, common tern and black skimmer make their summer homes in the open, sandy areas at Wrightsville Beach’s north and south ends. These preserves provide a very important habitat for beach-nesting birds.

But according to coastal biologist Lindsay Addison with Audubon North Carolina, these three species will start to fly south as the summer comes to a close.

When to see the beach-nesting birds at Wrightsville Beach

While a deadline looms to see these species before the year is out, there’s still time left before they begin their migration.

Least terns — named for being the smallest species of tern — will be around through early August, when they leave for south Florida, the Caribbean basin, and northern regions of South America.

Common terns show up at Wrightsville Beach in April and will stay until early fall. Though they get their name from being widespread across the continent, they actually have a smaller population at Wrightsville Beach than other migratory species.

Black skimmers are perhaps the most visually distinct of the three species with their large, uneven bills and will stick around the longest. They spend their fall in North Carolina and are joined then by other skimmers from the north. They form what’s called a staging population as they wait to make their next move south sometime in late November or early December.

As far as what time of day to see the birds, “There’s something going on throughout the day,” Addison said. She did note, however, that mornings and evenings may provide the most activity.

Where to see the beach-nesting birds at Wrightsville Beach

The beach-nesting birds congregate in the open areas at either end of Wrightsville Beach. That said, the south end is likely the best place to see them.

According to Addison, the birds prefer open areas because it allows them to see predators coming. While coyotes prey on these birds in the north end preserve, the opposite and more developed end of the island is free of them.

Because mammalian predators are difficult to control in the areas they populate, this makes the south end quite the valuable habitat for beach-nesting birds. It also makes it all the more necessary that humans don’t disturb these species.

This is why you’ll see plenty of signage marking off bird habitat when visiting the south end. The postings communicate where people shouldn’t go so as not to disrupt the wildlife.

“There is a misconception that the only concern is people stepping on the eggs,” Addison said. “The main problem is that when people get too close to nesting birds, it causes the adult birds to flush out, exposing the young birds to dangers. In order to prevent that, you need a buffer distance.”

Disaster can strike quickly for baby chicks. While there are no coyotes on the south end, a ghost crab can kill a chick with a single blow, according to Addison.

Flushing the birds also saps them of valuable energy they use to feed and survive.

The bird postings create the buffer distance these birds need to thrive. However, because space is so limited at the south end of Wrightsville Beach, visitors are still discouraged from going right up to the edge of a boundary.

Addison advised beachgoers to, “Pay attention to the birds and don’t do things that cause them to interrupt their behaviors. If the birds respond to you, you’re too close.”

She also highlighted that respecting the birds’ space allows for the best viewing experience, as they only engage in behaviors like feeding and hunting when they aren’t focused on humans.

“When you give the birds space, you get to see all kinds of cool things," Addison said. "Like you see in a nature documentary.”

One of the best ways to observe wildlife at Wrightsville Beach is on one of Audubon’s weekly birdwatching walks, which are free for anyone to join. They meet at the gazebo at Beach Access 43 on Mondays at 9 a.m.

For anyone that can’t make it then, Audubon also has volunteers stationed at the south end during most hours of the day who are happy to answer any questions from beachgoers.

Wrightsville Beach, NC, has become one of the top beach towns in the state, and it’s easy to see why. With just over four miles of shoreline, clear waters, and easy access to nearby Wilmington, this spot attracts both first-time visitors and loyal returnees.

This place offers the best of both worlds—laid-back beach time and fun activities within walking distance. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to relax, enjoy the view, and still have things to do nearby.

This guide covers everything you need to know before heading out, from when to go and what to see to where to eat and stay. Whether you’re planning your first trip or coming back for more, we’ll help you make the most of it.

Plan Your Visit Around the Seasons

The beach looks great year-round, but your experience can change depending on when you go. Summer is the busiest time. Expect more people and higher prices, but you’ll also get the warmest water, open beach shops, and lively events. If you want fewer crowds, plan your visit in late spring or early fall. The weather is still nice, and many shops and restaurants stay open.

Winter is the quietest season. Some businesses shorten their hours, but if you’re looking for peace and great photo spots, it’s not a bad option. Just don’t expect to swim comfortably—the water gets cold. Whatever time you pick, always check the local calendar for events or festivals that might line up with your trip.

Booking the Right Place to Stay

Where you stay can shape your whole experience. If you’re looking for rentals Wrightsville Beach NC has some great options. A good place to start is iTrip NC Beaches. Booking directly with them ensures you get the best price, and their customer service is known for being reliable and easy to work with.

They offer a wide mix of rentals—condos near the beach, large homes with water views, and smaller places that work well for couples or solo travelers. It’s worth browsing their listings early, especially during peak months. Whether you want to be near the pier, on the quieter South End, or somewhere close to restaurants and shops, you’ll find something that fits.

Wrightsville Beach has a few main access points, and each offers a slightly different vibe. If you want easy access to shops and food, the area near Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier is a smart pick. It’s great for families and anyone who wants to grab a snack without moving the car.

The South End is quieter. You’ll find fewer people and more open space. It’s good for long walks, fishing, or just sitting back with a book. The North End, closer to Shell Island, offers great views and easy access to the Intracoastal Waterway. No matter which end you pick, the beach is always clean and the water is clear.

Check Out the Best Local Food

One of the best parts of any trip is the food. Wrightsville Beach has options for everyone. If you like seafood, you’ll find plenty of it—fresh and local. Shark Bar and Kitchen is a favorite for fried fish and casual bites. For something with a view, try Bluewater Waterfront Grill. It’s right on the Intracoastal Waterway and serves great seafood and Southern-style dishes.

There are also quick places for breakfast and coffee if you’re heading out early. If you’re staying longer, it’s worth trying a mix of spots—some upscale, some casual. The local food scene is solid without being overwhelming.

Get Out on the Water

The beach is the main draw, but there’s more to do if you like being active. Paddleboarding and kayaking are popular and easy to get into—even if you’ve never tried them. Rentals are available all over town, and many places let you book by the hour or day.

Johnnie Mercers Pier is open for fishing and also makes for a great view. If you want to go boating, local companies offer rentals and guided tours. Some trips even take you through the Intracoastal Waterway, which is calm and easy to navigate. These water activities are a great way to see more than just the sand and surf.

Explore Shops for Gifts and Gear

Wrightsville Beach has more than just beach towels and sunscreen. Along the main roads, you’ll find a nice mix of small shops and local stores. You can pick up souvenirs, casual clothes, and small gifts without going far. There are surf shops too, in case you need new gear or just want to browse.

These shops aren’t huge, but they cover the basics and have some unique finds. Whether you forgot something or want to bring something home, it’s easy to find what you need within walking distance.

Must-See Attractions Around Town

Wrightsville Beach has more to offer than just sand and sea. Just a short drive away is Airlie Gardens, a public garden with walking trails, historic oak trees, and seasonal displays. It’s a good change of pace if you want a break from the beach. For those interested in local history, the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History gives a clear view of how the area has grown over time. It’s located in a restored beach cottage and won’t take long to explore.

Another favorite stop is the scenic drawbridge over the Intracoastal Waterway. It connects the beach to Wilmington and gives you a great view of boats passing through. It’s a small thing, but it’s part of what makes the area special. These local spots help round out your trip without adding much to your travel time.

Getting Around Without the Stress

Wrightsville Beach is easy to explore. Once you’re parked, you can walk or bike to most places. Many visitors prefer to leave their car parked for most of their stay. The streets are simple to follow, and bike rentals are available at a few local shops.

Parking can be tricky during busy weekends, especially near the pier or public beach access points. Some areas require paid parking, so it helps to check the local parking map before you go. If you’re staying in a rental, ask about parking rules ahead of time to avoid problems.

Wrightsville Beach is a place where you can enjoy a relaxed trip without giving up comfort or things to do. It’s easy to get to, offers clean and open beaches, and has the right mix of local charm and modern convenience. Whether you’re here to swim, eat, shop, or just unwind, this town makes it easy to enjoy every part of your stay.

Take the time to find the right rental, plan a few simple outings, and explore the nearby attractions. With options for all ages and interests, Wrightsville Beach is a top choice for your next beach vacation in North Carolina.

For screenwriter and producer Jonas Pate, Wilmington, North Carolina, embodies “pogue” life—his term for kids set loose on the marshes, hopping on boats, wakeboarding, and camping on Masonboro Island. Life in coastal Carolina, he says, is centered around a love of the outdoors.

Best known as showrunner, director, and executive producer of the hit Netflix series Outer Banks, the North Carolina native grew up traveling to nearby Wrightsville Beach for annual family reunions. “It was as good as Christmas when I was a kid,” Pate says. “You would get to hang out with all your cousins, go crabbing, jump off the dock, and just play in the waves.” Pate left the state for college and then cut his teeth in the film industry in Los Angeles. After twenty years away, he felt the tug back to southeastern North Carolina, wanting his children to enjoy the same kind of adventurous adolescence he’d loved.

A lesser-known side of Wilmington made his move back exceedingly logical; the city has long been one of the country’s biggest film hubs outside of L.A. The mixed terrain provides versatile backdrops for shooting—beaches, a historic downtown, the University of North Carolina Wilmington campus, and swamps—alongside the studios at Cinespace, formerly EUE Screen Gems.

Working in this community has provided Pate with abundant inspiration. He serves on the governor’s film commission, and his newest teen series, The Runarounds, is scheduled for release this fall on Amazon Prime. Shot in Wilmington, the show costars Brooklyn Decker and tells the story of a group of teenagers who form a band during the summer after graduating from high school. The series taps that exuberant, youthful summertime feeling that stitches through Pate’s oeuvre.

The Wilmington scene certainly keeps Pate busy—he also recently worked on a small movie, Driver’s Ed, directed by Bobby Farrelly and produced by his wife, Jen Pate. “The crews are really connected,” Pate says. “If anybody’s doing a short film, we’ll all jump in and help out. It feels a lot more communal than any other film community that I’ve ever been in.”

Here, Pate drops inside the landscape that so inspires his work to share his perfect day around North Carolina’s Port City, a.k.a. Wilmywood.

Top of the Morning

“A perfect day in Wilmington definitely involves the water,” Pate says. His day might begin with a Yoga Salt class on Crystal Pier. “Wilmington has inordinately good yoga,” he says. “Wilmington Yoga Center, Longwave, Salt—after having lived in California for twenty years, it’s just as good.”

After class, he refuels with coffee or a smoothie from Sundays, a café overlooking Wrightsville Beach that’s popular among the surfer set and UNC Wilmington students. Separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway, Wrightsville Beach boasts incredible surfing only a twenty-minute drive from downtown. The next step on his perfect day might involve hopping on a boat with family and friends to cruise over to Masonboro Island, an 8.4-mile barrier island and nature reserve, to surf and search for sand dollars.

Back on land, Beach Bagels is a popular pre- or post-beach pit stop—Pate recommends the Annie, a turkey BLT riff dressed up with jalapeños. Nearby Airlie Gardens, which dates to the 1700s, features local fauna and flora, including Venus flytraps—the carnivorous plant is native to this small pocket of the Carolinas.

Mad Mole Brewing is one of Pate’s neighborhood watering holes. Someone on his group text chain will frequently put out the call to bike over for a beer and a bite from local food trucks parked outside. Every weekend, different acoustic bands will play, and the venue is dog-friendly, ideal for Pate and his fifteen-year-old golden retriever, Maddy.

“Wilmington is amazing because it’s a city on the rise,” Pate says, adding that he’s watched Southern coastal cities like Charleston recover after storms. Wilmington was devastated by Hurricane Florence in 2018, but ever since the pandemic brought in waves of new residents, the city has boomed. With that, the food scene is flourishing too.

Since 2021, two new culinary heavyweights have opened their doors: Origins, an upscale modern American restaurant en route to the beach, and Seabird, serving fresh spins on Southern classics downtown, whose chef and co-owner, Dean Neff, was named a semifinalist for the James Beard Outstanding Chef Award in 2024. Pate’s newest favorite is Olivero, a Mediterranean restaurant that draws inspiration from chef Sunny Gerhart’s merchant sailor great-grandfather. Pate recommends the lasagna but stands by the restaurant in its entirety: “You can throw a dart at the menu and you’re going to be happy.”

CAROLINA BEACH — A local well-known developer faces fines in Wrightsville Beach after it determined his watercraft was a house boat under town ordinances and ordered its removal at the beginning of the month. Now, it’s docked in Carolina Beach, though some say having the “monstrosity in the water” at Wrightsville indicates the developer’s lack of concerns to follow rules.

Wade Miller founded Copper Builders — behind the controversial Hilton Bluffs development in Sledge Forest — and owns the AquaVita. Miller said he had reviewed town code before he docked in Wrightsville Beach “with confidence” AquaVita did not qualify as a floating home.

Wrightsville Beach communications manager Bailey Hartsell confirmed to Port City Daily the town determined AquaVita met the definition of a “floating home” under Section A.3 of their UDO. This is due to perceived lack of steering and navigational equipment, deeming it not designed for transport.

Though filed with the state as a “pleasure craft,” AquaVita received a formal notice of violation from Wrightsville Beach on July 7, with a July 11 compliance deadline initiating $50 daily fines. Miller wracked up around $500 in fines until the town issued a second notice, sent on July 11. He was told the fines would escalate to $500 daily from July 21, the same day AquaVita departed Wrightsville Beach, thus avoiding the higher penalty.

Hartsell said Miller is responsible for paying the accumulated $50-per-day fines — which remain outstanding — for the period the vessel was in violation. Wrightsville Beach will continue to follow its standard enforcement procedures to collect the owed fees.

Miller said he is considering appealing the town’s decision, stating AquaVita was not designed to be used as a “permanent dwelling.”

“It was never meant to provoke controversy, but I recognize that introducing something unconventional into a shared space raises questions and concerns,” Miller wrote. “I’ve taken that to heart and appreciated the opportunity to engage in a broader conversation around architecture and waterfront use.”

Miller moved AquaVita to the Carolina Beach Yacht Club Marina and on July 25 will move to Carolina Beach mooring field, located south of Snow’s Cut, on the approach channel into the Carolina Beach town waterfront.

Carolina Beach Deputy Town Manager Ed Parvin confirmed the town’s Harbormasters approved AquaVita, powered by dual 300 HP motors, for its mooring field stay. He stated the vessel meets local code requirements as a self-propelled craft within size parameters. Parvin noted it’s insured and the town has a copy of its U.S. Coast Guard safety inspection.

This is not the first instance where Miller has faced violations from local authorities. New Hanover County previously issued a notice of violation on April 14 for an unapproved 160-square-foot structure built on the Sledge Forest property. The structure was found to be in violation for lacking necessary building, zoning, floodplain, and CAMA permits, and for being used without proper approvals in a high-risk flood area.

Miller, however, contested the structure’s characterization, arguing it was a temporary unit, not affixed to the ground, and manufactured offsite. He submitted a commercial building application, which remains under county review.

The developer is planning a large residential project on the 4,000-acre “Sledge Forest” property in Castle Hayne. Hilton Bluffs could include up to 4,000 residential units and has drawn significant opposition from advocacy groups like Save Sledge Forest and local residents concerned about its impact on the old-growth forest and wetlands.

Lisa Peck has been following the Sledge Forest property, located near her home in Castle Hayne. She is concerned about the impacts it will have when it comes to increased traffic and flooding.

“He put the ‘office’-labeled fish camp and a giant solar panel with a grill, Porto John and fire pit on the property with a concrete slab right on the river with no permits,” she said. “He’s going to clear-cut the old growth forest and surely cause flooding to those of us that live adjacent to his property. He purchased the house next door to me to tear down and build a bridge to his glorious community. … But he follows no rules and thinks they don’t apply to him. It’s all about showing off and making money.”

Miller has gone on the record saying he and Copper Builders remain committed to “meaningful conservation outcomes” for the Sledge property. In March, Copper Builders reached an agreement with Unique Places to Save — a conservation nonprofit — to sell 1,160 acres of Sledge Forest for $10.2 million for conservation. The purchase is contingent on a grant from the North Carolina Land and Water Fund, with award decisions expected in the fall.

The developer is also unsure where the AquaVita will go after the 10-day reservation at Carolina Beach’s mooring field but Miller said he will continue to use it for private recreational purposes.

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - A luxury vessel anchored in Banks Channel drew more than curious glances this summer. It sparked a broader debate about zoning enforcement, developer accountability and what kind of future residents want for Wrightsville Beach.

The vessel named AquaVita appeared just before the Fourth of July. It remained anchored for weeks, despite violating the town’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), which bans “floating homes” in all zoning districts.

Town officials say the vessel met that definition, lacked steering capabilities, and was not designed for transport.

“The court held that a floating structure that lacks a means of steering and navigational equipment, and is permanently moored, was not a vessel even though it floats,” said Zoning Administrator Robert O’Quinn. “I’ve looked through every picture and every floor plan. I can’t find anywhere you could steer it.”

After the town issued a compliance deadline of July 11, fines began accumulating at $50 per day, increasing to $500 a day starting July 21.

This morning, on the day of that deadline, AquaVita left the channel.

“I sent them the application to appeal to the board of adjustments, but they didn’t appeal it and left this morning,” O’Quinn confirmed.

Town officials say the decision to enforce the ordinance wasn’t personal, but about upholding the law.

“By definition, the vessel that’s been in Banks Channel is classified as a floating home,” said Communications Manager Bailey Hartsell. “Wrightsville Beach has strict ordinances that do not allow these types of vessels. Going forward, the town will continue to enforce these important rules so that we maintain the integrity of Wrightsville Beach.”

But what has residents talking isn’t just the zoning violation it’s who owns the boat.

AquaVita is owned by Wade Miller of Copper Builders, the same developer behind the controversial proposal to build on more than 4,000 acres of wetlands and forest in northern New Hanover County, land locals refer to as “Sledge Forest.”

That proposal has faced fierce public backlash over its potential environmental impact.

In a statement provided to WECT News, Wade and Ann Miller defended their vessel and its use.

“AquaVita is a privately owned, North Carolina–registered, recreational vessel — not a business, not a residence, and not a floating home. We, the owners, are aboard. Like other boaters, we’ve been enjoying the use of public waterways in accordance with the rights granted to all citizens,” the Millers wrote.

“We did not move the vessel previously because we felt we were well within our legal rights. We decided to move because the conditions were favorable, and we were already planning a relocation this week.”
