LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - LeTourneau University will soon have quite a boost to their athletics program since construction is well underway on their Athletic and Human Performance Air Dome.
LeTourneau University Vice President of Athletics Tim Sceggel took a look at the progress at the Air Dome site on Monday.
“It’s going really well. We’ve been thrilled with our partnership with Transet. They are right on schedule,” Sceggel said.
The location of the track has been laid out and work on the entrance is underway.
“We have a 200-meter banked indoor track. It’ll be only the fourth indoor track in the State of Texas, so it’s a huge thing for not only LeTourneau but also all of East Texas,” Sceggel said.
They plan on making the dome available to school districts and for hosting special events.
“It will have a huge impact on our athletic department. It will bring in elite recruits in the realm of track and cross country, but then also for tennis. And, we have a turf bay as well. We’ll be able to do a host of workouts and all types of activities,” Sceggel said.
The air dome is an inflatable, but it’s not temporary.
“[It’s a] permanent structure that will not go up and down, and underneath the dome will be 120,000 square feet of usable space for a host of different events,” Sceggel said.
And of course, it will be climate controlled.
“It’s going to be a cool 73, 72 degrees throughout, so you can always trust in the temperature in there regardless of what’s going on outside,” Sceggel said.
There will be seating for 1,200.
“That meets specifications for a national championship at the NCAA level,” Sceggel said.
With all that and a planned event streaming capability, the dome will be a leap forward for LeTourneau athletics.
The $30-million project is funded by private donations, and LeTourneau is hoping for completion by April 2026.
