Jude suffered a broken collarbone and minor cuts – thankfully, no serious or internal injuries, which is something his family said is thanks to the grace of God.
CARTHAGE, Texas — One East Texas family is reflecting on the day their son was nearly taken from them after being struck by a vehicle in Carthage two weeks ago in a hit-and-run incident.
“It was scary,” Nathan Brown said. “There was blood everywhere, and I was thinking, 'am I going to lose my child?”
His 5-year-old son Jude Brown was hit by a car while riding a scooter just outside the Northside Christian Church in Carthage on Sunday, March 16.
Amid the chaos, Nathan Brown said the family had to stay calm and find strength when it mattered most.
“I kept trying to let my voice of faith come out and tell Jude you're OK, you're tough and you're going to be all right,” Nathan said.
Less than a week after the accident, police arrested Jhavorry Crayton, who is accused of being behind the wheel, hitting Jude and then fleeing the scene.
Crayton in the Gregg County Jail on a $20,500 bond in that county and in Panola County where the accident happened he has no bond.
Despite nearly taking Jude’s life, Nathan has no animosity toward the person who left their son laying in the street – left for dead.
“We don't feel a lot of anger,” Nathan said. “I'm hoping that they find grace in the eyes of the Lord.”
Jude suffered a broken collarbone and minor cuts – thankfully, no serious or internal injuries, which is something his family said is thanks to the grace of God.
“There's no doubt in my mind that Jude is a miracle of God,” Jude’s mother Lacey Brown said. “Doesn't make sense what happened, for him to come through with the little injuries as he has.”
Lacey said while he has made a full recovery, the family still struggles to walk past the spot where he nearly lost his life.
The scars and bruises are still fresh, some visible. Despite the trauma, Jude continues to live his life, showing resilience as he moves forward.
“It’s just going to be a reminder of how close he came to dying, but God didn't let that happen. And we are just beyond grateful that he is going to live an amazing life,” Lacey said.
