The Manhattan Beach Unified School District has named veteran educator Matthew Horvath as the new principal of Manhattan Beach Middle School. Horvath's appointment will begin on July 1.
Horvath brings more than 25 years of experience in education to his new role. Most recently, he held the position of assistant superintendent of personnel services for the Beverly Hills Unified School District.
Previously, he served as a middle school principal for three years and a high school principal for four years in Torrance Unified School District, as well as a high school assistant principal in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
He has also held a variety of district leadership roles, including serving as director of instruction in the Los Angeles Unified School District and assistant superintendent for human resources in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District.
A longtime South Bay resident, Horvath said that he was excited about the opportunity to serve within his community and is eager to collaborate with students, staff, families, and community partners of MBMS. This fall, his older daughter will attend Mira Costa High School, while his younger daughter continues at Hermosa Valley School.
“It is an absolute honor to join the Manhattan Beach Middle School community as your new principal," said Horvath in a statement. "This is the right place and the right time in my career, a chance to return to the work I love most, serving students, staff, and families during one of the most meaningful stages in education. I’m excited to bring my experience, my heart, and my full commitment to a school and community I care deeply about."
Throughout his career, Horvath has prioritized student success, staff collaboration, and community engagement, along with a commitment to the social-emotional well-being of students. He also has experience in curriculum development and facilitating effective Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
MBUSD Superintendent John Bowes expressed gratitude to the MBUSD staff and families who participated in the MBMS principal interview process.
“We approach hiring with the utmost importance, and it is a thorough and collaborative process that involves the school site community, families, and district staff," said Bowes in a statement. "We are proud to welcome Dr. Horvath and look forward to his leadership at MBMS. His broad experience and dedication to fostering an inclusive school culture make him an excellent fit for the MBMS community."
Horvath Appointment Follows Olesiuk Resignation
Horvath's appointment comes following the announcement by current MBMS Principal Luke Olesiuk that he would step down at the end of the school year.
Olesiuk, who had come under fire along with MBUSD administrators for the school's and district's response to a handgun incident at the school in March, announced in April that he was leaving to pursue other opportunities within education.
Olesiuk served just one year as principal at Manhattan Beach Middle School. He started the job in the summer of 2024, after having served as a vice principal at the school.
Olesiuk was one in a series of MBMS principals who held the position for three years or less.
The previous MBMS principal, Jennifer Huynh, served at the helm for two years, from 2022 to 2024, before leaving to become principal of Mira Costa High School.
Prior to that, Rose Ahrens served as principal from 2019-2022, and Kim Linz served as principal from 2016-2018.
Manhattan Beach Middle School serves approximately 1,200 students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.
