HAMPTON — Another year, another championship for the Kittatinny Barracudas summer swimming team.

Spear-headed by record-breaking performances by Samantha Russell, Hunter Klingener and Jake Riva, the Barracudas captured their ninth straight conference title at the WVSC Championships at Kittatinny High School’s indoor pool by totaling 1,665 points.

The annual conference meet also featured an eye-popping 19 new meet records in the yard pool and Kittatinny’s Russell, Klingener and Riva, Forest Lakes’ Melanie Lumkong, Kira Alemy and Dayna Alemy, Sussex County YMCA’s Emily Rothamel, Emily Haudek, Abbey Gardner, Vincent Fasino and Chris Gutierrez, Lake Tranquility’s Anthony Rizzo, Matthew Freund, Brandon Castellaneta and Nicholas Castellaneta, Lake Stockholm’s Finley Brown, and Lake Tamarack’s Kristin Silipena each win two individual gold medals.

And, the Barracudas kept their reign going on the WVSC, a league in which it owns the most team titles since 1993. In 2013, they surpassed Sussex-Wantage to set the mark for most team crowns won during that span.

The Barracudas also currently hold the longest streak of championships won during this period after setting the mark back in 2011 when they won their fifth title. At that time, they surpassed former club Vernon Valley Lake’s streak of four from 1993-1996.

“It’s great for the team and the program,” Klingener said of getting title No. 9. “I don’t think any team can say that they have been champs for nine years in a row. It’s a good feeling to have that strong of a team.”

“It’s amazing,” Russell said. “That’s pretty remarkable.”

They were able to continue their recent title streak — dating back to 2007 — because Russell, Klingener and Riva had outstanding performances at the Kittatinny pool, where the WVSC meet was held for the first time since 2010.

Russell and Klingener surpassed two meet records apiece while Riva set one for the Barracudas.

Russell set her marks in the girls 13-14-year-old 50-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke by posting times of 28.69 seconds and 1:12.09, respectively. Russell, an incoming freshman for Kittatinny High, surpassed the previous mark of 29.77 in the 50 fly set by former Lake Tranquility swimmer Krista Aigotti back in 2005 and beat the time of 1:18.71 in the 100 breast set by Lumkong back in 2010.

Even though she said she “did what she usually did” as far as swimming, Russell was still surprised about setting the two records, especially the fly one from 2005.

“Seriously?” Russell asked. “That’s awesome.”

As for Klingener, he posted his record-setting performances in the boys 15-18-year-old 50 backstroke and the 100 freestyle by touching the wall in times of 27.12 and 50.17 seconds, respectively.

The 15-year-old’s times were just good enough to beat out both records that were set back in 2005 by former Cliffwood Lake swimmer Kevin Carney, who had posted a 27.22 in the 50 back and a 51.41 in the 100 free.

Klingener, a rising junior at Lenape Valley High School who was an All-Herald first team selection the past two years for United Newton Lenape Valley’s swim team, was thrilled to get the records and swim as well as he did.

“I was happy with them,” Klingener said. “It’s pretty good for where I am at in my summer training.”

As for Riva, he broke the boys 13-14 50 butterfly record by swimming a 26.74. He surpassed former Sussex Wantage swimmer Shaun Greer’s mark of 28.63 set back in 2005.

Riva rounded out his double-gold performance by winning the 100 free in 54.32.

Following these three for the Barracudas were Salome Calderon, who won two events in the girls 6 & Under division. Calderon won the 25 backstroke in 28.40 and the 25 free in 22.98.

In addition, Ryan Newell (boys 13-14 50 backstroke), Amanda Newell (13-14 50 backstroke), Tyler Sweatt (boys 11-12 50 free), Braeden Hahn (boys 13-14 50 free), Aiden Carlson (boys 7-8-year-old 25 butterfly), Ty Hollar (6 & Under 25 backstroke) and Clare Schwartz (girls 9-10 25 backstroke) each won an event.

Kittatinny head coach George Soutter was thrilled about his team’s performance and their season, which also featured them winning the Gold Division for the third straight year by posting a 5-0 record.

“The kids did well,” Soutter said. “It’s amazing the progress they make in six weeks and they showed it today.”

Following Kittatinny in the team standings was Newton with 1,073 points. Sussex County YMCA, the host of the meet, took third with 1,042 points.

Lake Tranquility followed Sussex County YMCA, as it finished fourth with 757 points. The Thunderbolts also was awarded the Gold Sportsmanship Trophy for the conference.

Forest Lakes rounded out the top five with 646 points. Lake Tamarack was sixth with 644 points, Lake Stockholm was seventh with 488, Sussex Wantage was eighth with 436, Culver Lake was ninth with 404, Cliffwood Lake was 10th with 291, Ogdensburg was 11th with 151 and Lake Lackawanna was 12th with 135.

Forest Lakes, Susssex Wantage and Lake Stockholm were also recognized as the Silver Division champions after they finished the regular season in a three-way tie for first.

Individually, other than Kittatinny’s swimmers, Rizzo, Rothamel and Kira Alemy set two meet records apiece out of the 17 double-gold winners.

Rizzo, who just graduated from Newton High school after a successful career with UNLV’s swim team, set his records in the the boys 15-18 50 fly (25.00 seconds) and the 100 breast (1:01.42). Rothamel set her two in the girls 15-18 50 back (29.23) and 50 free (26.06) and Kira Alemy set her pair in the girls 11-12 50 back (31.88) and 50 breast (34.80).

Haudek, Lumkong, Nicholas Castellaneta and Freund each set a record as well while winning their two golds. Castellaneta surpassed the longest record at the meet, beating out the boys 9-10 25 back that was set previously in 2001 by former Vernon High standout Ayman Andrews. Castellaneta clocked a 16.85 to beat Andrews’ 17.23.

Haudek set a record in the girls 15-18 100 free by clocking a 57.35. Lumkong set one in the girls 15-1850 breast with a 34.42.

Freund set one in the boys 11-12 50 fly with a 28.84.

RANDOLPH, NJ- On a recent Saturday afternoon, on the grounds of Tamarack Summer Day camp, the campfire was crackling and the marshmallows were roasting. Kids were eating popcorn and Smore's, as they ran around laughing and playing, all while throwing… Snowballs?

At Tamarack’s winter open house on Saturday Feb. 8, families from Randolph and the surrounding area got to see what a summer day camp looks like covered in snow. Tamarack is a beautifully updated camp that sits on 37 acres of pristine, protected woodland property in the heart of Randolphm New Jersey.

Two years ago, Tamarack took over the already existing campgrounds, and spent a year upgrading, improving, and cleaning up every last one of those 37 acres. With brand-new and improved heated pools, turf fields, ropes course, creative arts studio, indoor air-conditioned space, and more, Tamarack provided the summer experience of a lifetime for children aged 3 to 15 during their first season in 2014.

Eight-year-old Ethan from Randolph, who attended last summer said, "My favorite activity at camp is the skateboard park."

Ten year-old EJ, also from Randolph, overheard and agreed, adding, "Yes the skateboarding is great, and also the GaGa pits, everyone at camp loves playing GaGa."

Tamarack built two additional GaGa pits for next summer, and announced that the International GaGa Association had sanctioned Tamarack to hold an “All Camp GaGa Tournament” this summer. Upon hearing that, EJ and Ethan channeled their inner Joe Namath, and all but guaranteed they would be champions.

Other new additions to the camp that were added this offseason include a Cage Ball Arena (Dodgeball in a box) and Deck Hockey, as well as a giant swing and new mini zip line additions to the ropes course.

When asked what the best thing about Tamarack was, EJ stated “We love our counselors. They are really nice and they support us.” Ethan chimed in, enthusiastically stating, "And we love the food here… especially the chicken patties."

"Part of Tamarack’s philosophy is to 'create a unique atmosphere to intentionally develop true life skills in campers, such as independence, confidence, teamwork, social skills, integrity, leadership, and more," said Terry Castro, Camp Director. NEWTON, NJ — With the sun shining down, the Newton Sharks Swim Team, along with eight other teams; Kittatinny Barracudas, Sussex County YMCA, Lake Tranquility Thunderbolts, Lake Tamarack, Lake Stockholm, Lake Lackawanna Youth, Culver Lake, and Forest Lakes, got together at Newton Pool for the 17th Annual NWNJ Swim Invitational on Saturday, July 14.

Invitational Chairperson Colleen McLean said, “In past years, there have been more than 300 swimmers from over eight Sussex and Warren county teams that compete in 90 events throughout the day.” This year’s invitational had 64 events.

The first portion of the event went from 9 until 11 a.m. and was for both male and female swimmers ages 11-18 for the first 42 events, while events 43 and 44 were for male and female swimmers ages 9-10.

The second portion of the event, from 1 until nearly 3 p.m., had events for both boys and girls ages six and under, and 7-10.

Breakfast and lunch were available for all to enjoy

BYRAM -- Byram residents will have the opportunity to get out and enjoy the amenities of a new park just in time for the warm spring weather.

On Saturday, May 13, Byram officials will cut the ceremonial ribbon for the grand opening of the township's new recreational fields at Tamarack Park, officially making the 10-acre park available for the public's recreational enjoyment.

Located at 10 Jones Lane, off Route 206, Tamarack Park includes two multi-purpose sports fields, one 360 feet long and 215 feet wide and the other 180 feet by 100 feet.

Tamarack Park is the active recreation component of 222 acres known as the Tamarack Greenway. Byram owns 69 acres of the preserved property outright, while 153 acres have been preserved through a conservation and public-access easement.

"Given Byram's rugged landscape, it is difficult to find a large, relatively flat, contiguous area to develop fields for our recreation programs," Mayor Jim Oscovitch said. "Acquisition of the Tamarack Greenway and construction of the fields at Tamarack Park protects and preserves the natural beauty of Byram, and gave us the necessary space for new recreational fields that our youth and adults can enjoy."

The grand opening ceremony will feature guest speakers, refreshments, and the chance to take a hike along the recently completed hiking trail that runs from C.O. Johnson Park to the new recreation field.

The ceremonial ribbon cutting will take place at noon.

"This is just such a beautiful place," council member Scott Olson said. "The hiking trail goes through some quiet, peaceful woods and provides the perfect way for us to start connecting the outdoor amenities of our town."

Acquisition of the Tamarack Greenway property -- which used Byram's Open Space tax in partnership with county, state and private funding -- was completed in 2010 for a total cost of $4.15 million, including more than $2 million from the state Department of Environmental Protection Green Acres Program, $1.4 million from New Jersey Conservation Foundation, $512,000 from the Sussex County Open Space Fund, $160,000 from the Byram Township Open Space Fund and $50,000 from the Land Conservancy of New Jersey.

"These are the first new active recreational fields created in Byram Township in nearly 15 years," Recreation Director Janet Meisner said. "I love that parents will be able to bring their kids to practice and take advantage of our trail system to get in some physical activity while their children are practicing. It's a great marriage of active and passive recreation in one location."

The parking area for the fields at Tamarack Park also provides a convenient access point for Byram's network of trails.

"From the park trailhead, hikers can enjoy public trails extending east along the Tamarack Greenway to C.O. Johnson Park -- the township's largest active recreational facility," said Charlie Kranz, Recreation Committee chairman. "Between Tamarack Park and C.O. Johnson Park, the public can explore nature for miles and miles."

Hikers can also choose to branch off the Tamarack Greenway Trail to the south at Johnson Lake, and hike up to Cranberry Overlook.

"Tamarack Park -- with its connections to Byram's trail network -- features magnificent scenery, showcasing the beauty of the New Jersey Highlands," Open Space Chairman Ray Bonker said. "Spectacular views of Cranberry Lake and the Delaware Water Gap from scenic overlooks make for great hiking, and really illustrates how Byram is the 'Township of Lakes.' "

Planning Board Chairman George Shivas said, "These new fields and trails will bring many hours of enjoyment to residents of Byram, and provide an excellent place for people to get outside for exercise. Additionally, the project helps the township meet some of the objectives of our master plan."

While these park improvements address the growing demand for active recreation in Byram, the Tamarack Greenway project also aids in economic growth.

"The park's location -- literally across the road from Allamuchy Mountain State Park and the Sussex Branch Trail -- provides an easy point of access for the region's trail network, and a way to enjoy the natural beauty of Byram," said Scott Olson, councilman and Open Space Committee member. "Our town is truly a unique eco-tourism destination in northern New Jersey. With a vast trail system that traverses a wide variety of terrain including lakes, rivers and mountaintops, the public can visit Byram and enjoy nature at its finest."

The opening ceremonies celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13. Guests should plan to park at C.O. Johnson Field, as large crowds are expected. Visitors will have the option to either hike the trail (described by Olson as a 1.5-mile walk over easy to moderate terrain) or take a shuttle to the recreational fields from the parking area.

A limited number of senior and handicapped parking passes will be available for those who are unable to ride the shuttle or hike the trail. Passes can be picked up at the municipal building.

Registration is recommended for this event, and should be completed by Tuesday, May 9.

NEWTON, NJ—Although the Newton Pool has been closed for the summer, the Newton Sharks Swim Team still held their annual invitational, this year with the help of Kittatinny, who allowed the Sharks to use their indoor pool.

It was a beautiful day outside, but the events were held in the indoor pool at Kittatinny. Kittatinny Barracudas, Sussex County YMCA, Lake Tranquility Thunderbolts, Lake Tamarack, Lake Stockholm, Culver Lake Swim Team, and the Lake Lackawanna Youth Swim Club all competed with the Sharks at the invitational.

As in the previous years, this years’ invitational had approximately 64 competitive events for the swimmers. According to Colleen McLean, an Invitational Chairperson, “In the past there have been close to 300 swimmers from over the eight different Sussex and Warren teams that will compete throughout the days’ events.”

The first 42 events for both boys and girls swimmers ages 11-18, went from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. while events 43 and 44 were for male and female swimmers ages 9-10.

The second portion of the event, running from 1 until around 2 p.m., had events for both boys and girls ages six and under, and 7-10 for events 45 through 64.

Breakfast was available which included bagels and Taylor ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches, while lunch was also served around 12 p.m. which included hamburgers and hot dogs, chicken nuggets, the walking taco, and more. Drinks and ice cream/ snacks were also available throughout the day.
