MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) - A Maple Heights homeowner says she is not happy after Allstate told her the company will not pay to repair hail damage to her home.
Melva Dorsey has lived in Maple Heights for four years. She was home when the hailstorm hit. Hail marks are visible all over her siding.
“I was glad that I was in the house, but it was coming down. I never seen anything like that before. It was frightening,” Dorsey said.
Dorsey contacted a contractor, who was present when an insurance worker inspected the home.
“He marked up and he agreed with me that what we seen was damage. And I assumed the claim was going to go just as, 100 other ones here in town,” said Paul Harris, owner of Busy Bee Restoration.
Harris has worked in severe hail restoration for more than 20 years across the country. He said he was surprised by the outcome of Dorsey’s claim.
“To my surprise, I was over here with Melva Thursday when the adjuster called and said they weren’t paying for anything,” Harris said.
Homeowner questions decades of premium payments
Dorsey has been an Allstate customer for decades.
“So what you going to do? It seemed like they forgot that it was me that was paying all of those premiums,” Dorsey said.
Harris and his team marked hail damage on the home with chalk, which he said indicates dents caused by hail. Allstate separately totaled Dorsey’s car, which was parked in the driveway next to the home during the storm.
“You pay your premiums in good faith that if you have damage, they’ll be there for you. And you can’t explain to me how the same insurance company can total a car that’s sitting 10 feet from the house and tell me there’s zero damage on a house,” Harris said.
Neighbors received new roofs, siding
Neighbors near Dorsey’s home have received new roofs and siding following the hailstorm. Dorsey and Harris requested that Allstate send an engineer to inspect the damage. Allstate declined the request.
“Something wrong somewhere. And so I’m here, I’m here, I’m here. And I’m ready to fight,” Dorsey said.
Allstate has not responded to a request for comment on Dorsey’s case. Dorsey and Harris say they are not giving up on getting Dorsey the repairs. Harris said anyone with a denied claim they believe was incorrect should contact their insurance company and continue working to resolve it. Harris said homeowners can also find a contractor to help resubmit claims.
19 News received a statement from Allstate. They said:
We are in contact with our customer and will resolve the claim according to their policy.
