HINCKLEY TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Labor Day weekend marks one of the last chances nature-goers can fully enjoy one of Northeast Ohio's favorite watering holes.

Hinckley Lake in Medina County is about to be drained beginning September 18 as part of a nearly three-year restoration project.

Cleveland Metroparks leaders said in a release it's time to drain this 87-acre man-made lake and reinforce it so it can last another hundred years.

According to Cleveland Metroparks leaders, the initial phase of the project will include temporarily draining Hinckley Lake while crews work to remove silt deposits that have accumulated over the last century from the Rocky River.

The $9 -10 million project will help lift the height of the dam embankment and clean out the amount of silt that has made its way into the lake.

The lake ranges in depth from 2-16 feet deep.

The aim of the work is to have the dam and the 150-foot-wide spillway meet "modern standards and provide improved protection in the event of severe flooding."

The project is estimated to cost between $8-9 million.

History of the dam

Finished in 1927, the dam is the most prominent feature of the 87-acre manmade Hinckley Lake. The lake is home to bass, carp, catfish, trout, and bluegill, according to the Cleveland Metroparks.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife stocks about 2,400 rainbow trout every April at the lake and anglers can keep up to five rainbow trout and two bass (minimum size 12") per day.

Access to Hinckley Lake will be closed once dam rehabilitation begins, however, Hinckley Reservation will remain open throughout the project's expected completion of summer 2026.

Cleveland Metroparks to Buy Ironwood Golf Course

In a unanimous vote during its January 19th board meeting, the Cleveland Metroparks agreed to buy the 150+ acre Ironwood Golf Course in Hinckley for $3 million.

According to the terms of the agreement, the golf course will remain in operation for at least 10 years after the close of the sale. But obtaining and operating another golf property is not the primary reason behind the Metroparks’ purchase – especially given Ironwood’s close proximity to their existing Sleepy Hollow and Seneca properties.

No, this purchase is about a river.

The East Branch of the Rocky River (EBRR) runs through the far east corner of Ironwood, between and across the 13th, 14th and 15th holes in the property’s lowest elevations. Bigger than a creek but not quite a river, the water comes in from the Brecksville Reservation to the north and heads out south toward the giant lake at Hinckley Reservation.

Preserving the EBRR, its tributaries and other sensitive resources within the 3,000+ acres of Hinckley Reservation is the reason why the Metroparks is buying Ironwood Golf Course.

In 2003, the Metroparks completed their EBRR Greenway Study. Since then, the Board has made several property acquisitions along the EBRR corridor between Brecksville and Hinckley. The purchase of Ironwood is simply another such acquisition.

From the Background information presented to the Board about Ironwood:

“The Ironwood Property is in close proximity to existing high-quality resources, as it’s situated in an area that supports groundwater-driven primary headwater streams and Category 3 wetlands. The Ironwood Property presents an excellent opportunity for stream restoration projects. The acquisition of the Ironwood Property will enhance the EBRR corridor and associated tributary streams, create core natural resource areas along the river, and build upon the connections between Hinckley, Mill Stream Run, and Brecksville Reservations.

This is an important acquisition for the Rocky River watershed, preservation of the Ironwood Property will conserve greenspace along the EBRR, and expand upon this important corridor.”

So in essence, the Cleveland Metroparks purchased Ironwood Golf Course to make sure Ironwood was never turned into a housing development, as a development would have put additional strain on the EBRR.

According to Ironwood Golf Course owner Bob Brown, the deal is set to close later this summer and the Metroparks will take over operation after the 2023 golf season is completed, on November 1st. Bob will share the proceeds of the sale with his brother, Charles.

The purchase price includes all personal property associated with the operation and maintenance of the golf course, including ten vintage golf carts. Owner Bobby Brown also carved a sweet 10 year deal for his own golf game through a contractual caveat: “…during which time the Seller may play the course without charge.” Solid negotiating there.

Brown also made sure to help the current Ironwood employees find future work, as the terms state the Metroparks will “use all reasonable efforts to retain the employees of the golf course”.

A purchase price of $3 million sounds like a significant amount, but once the proceeds are split between the two brothers and the taxes are paid on the sale, the net result isn’t a huge windfall for 56 years of day-to-day management worries. But the end result still pleases Bobby Brown.

“Ironwood has been a golf course belonging to the Brown family since 1967,” said Bobby. “When the Cleveland Metroparks contacted us about buying the Ironwood property, my brother and I said we would sell providing they kept it a golf course. They agreed and they will take over operations in November 2023. We are hoping that all our great employees stay on.”

“I am sure the Metroparks will do a great job and everyone will still enjoy the golf course in 2024 and beyond,” Mr. Brown continued. “We would also like to thank everyone for their many years of golfing at Ironwood. We appreciate all of you.”

Cleveland Metroparks Golf will release a statement on their plans for the ongoing operations of Ironwood Golf Course shortly after their November take over.

HINCKLEY, Ohio — At a time when real estate prices are soaring, and land is being gobbled up for development, Hinckley is taking a stand to try to preserve its country setting and way of life.

In Hinckley, one man has become the public face of a movement to keep the town rural.

Hinckley has long been known for its tranquility and idyllic setting.

And now, if you drive around town, you’ll also notice a lot of “Keep Hinckley Township Rural” yard signs.

The brainchild of resident Matt Riley.

“The goal of what I started with the yard signs was to kind of space out the development and keep that rural atmosphere," said Hinckley resident Matt Riley.

Weary of life in suburbia, Riley moved to Hinckley in 2018 and started a family.

He says the slower, simpler way of life has been a welcome change of pace.

“Very blessed to be living out here. It’s very peaceful, it’s very quiet.” Riley said. "There’s a lot of opportunities to experience nature."

So, hoping to keep it that way, Riley, who works in IT by day, in his spare time started a GoFundMe page and website.

Demand for yard signs is steady and Riley says support from the community is strong.

“Yeah, there’s quite a few signs around,” Riley said.

The basis of the movement is all about lot sizes in Hinckley.

"Keeping Hinckley Township Rural" hopes to increase the now two-acre residential lot size requirement to five acres.

Something that hasn’t been adjusted by the township since the 1970s.

“It’s not an original idea. I kind of just wanted to get it out there to show support in the community that people do want to have larger lot sizes out here,” Riley said.

Just down the road, the once very rural city of Medina is a little less rural thanks to aggressive development in the early 2000s.

A quid pro quo for keeping the cities income tax rate low.

“To do that you have to have commercial growth, retail growth, restaurants, businesses as well as industry,” Medina Mayor Dennis Hanwell said.

But Hanwell admits neighboring Hinckley will most likely never go down the road his city did.

“Getting people to visualize what you’re visualizing at the onset is a challenge,” said Hanwell.

And it’s not just Hinckley. Neighboring Medina Township has a “Preserve Medina Township" campaign resisting a proposed gas station.

As for Riley, he’s set to speak at a Hinckley Township trustees meeting later this month.

Trying to make his case, urging trustees to pass an acreage increase.

“The general premise of why we would do this is for the peace, the quiet and the enjoyment of your own private property,” Riley said.

As of right now, there doesn’t seem to be support for Hinkley Township trustees to change the acreage code.

And there are questions if a change would even be legally enforceable.

But Trustees have expressed support for other ways to keep the town rural for generations to come.

HINCKLEY, Ohio — The Meadows Turkey Bowl in Medina County started out as a small backyard family football game about 30 years ago and has blossomed into a huge fundraising event.

Since the players began collecting money for charity, more than $2.2 million has been raised. The money is split between St. Vincent de Paul Society and The Mary Grace Memorial Foundation, a non-profit that helps families affected by cancer.

Pete Meadows, 27, has been playing in the game for seven years. His father, Mike Meadows, is one of the founders of the Turkey Bowl.

"That has been our mission for really the past seven years is helping those needy families battling cancer," Pete Meadows said.

As a young and healthy newlywed, he never imagined the game would be played in his honor, but that's exactly what will happen when the players take the field on Thanksgiving morning behind the family's business in Hinckley.

"You think you're immune to it. There's no way I can get diagnosed with cancer. I'm helping all these families," he said.

Pete's ironic and frightening journey started in January. He was feeling fine when he drove to Orangetheory in Strongsville with his wife of four months, Anita.

However, he has very little memory of his workout there. On the drive home, Pete began acting strangely and called Anita by her grandmother's name.

"He called me Anna in the car and I was like, 'What do you mean? Why are you calling me that?" Anita recalled.

After they arrived at their Hinckley home, things turned terrifying. As Anita handed Pete a protein shake, he started making grunting noises, suffered the first of three grand mal seizures and lowered himself to the floor.

"I just saw him foaming at the mouth and I was like this is bad. This is serious," Anita told News 5.

Anita dialed 911. Pete was taken first to the Cleveland Clinic Family Health Center in Brunswick and later transferred to the main campus in Cleveland.

The next morning he woke up feeling fuzzy in an MRI machine and his eyes were drawn to a monitor displaying a shaded image of his brain.

"We've helped families with brain cancer so I know what it looks like. I said to the doctor, 'Do I have a brain tumor?' He said, 'Yeah, you have a brain tumor.' I'm just laying there like you've got to be kidding me. I have brain cancer?"

The tumor was the size of a baseball. The official diagnosis was Oligodendroglioma, low grade 2. Doctors believed it had been growing for five years.

Pete did a lot of research and eventually settled on having brain surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Dr. Raymond Sawaya assured Pete that he was going to be okay and the four-hour surgery last February went extremely well.

"It was like scooping out ice cream. The tumor just came completely out," Pete said.

Pete expected he would need radiation and chemotherapy, but remarkably, doctors told him neither was necessary.

"Which means I won the tumor lottery," Pete said.

Pete and Anita believe it's a miracle that everything turned out as it did and feel the power of prayer played a big role.

"It's all a miracle. There are so many miracles. It was difficult, but we were being watched for sure," Anita said.

Recent scans of Pete's brain have come back clean. There are no signs of brain cancer. He will return to Houston every three months for follow-up scans.

Pete is excited to get back on the field for the Turkey Bowl, knowing that he will once again be raising money for families dealing with cancer while also counting his blessings that he beat it.

"I'm emotional, and so for me every day when we go to bed, I pray," he said. "I just thank God for another day."

The Meadows Turkey Bowl takes place between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving.
