Green senior Donovan O'Neil has committed to pursue a track and field career in college at Malone.
O'Neil, a four-year letter winner in basketball, said he is excited to learn under the tutelage of Pioneers track and field coach Mark McClure.
“I decided to run track for coach McClure at Malone because first off, I wanted to go to a Christian school,” O'Neil said. “God gave me athletic ability and I want to continue to strengthen my faith through that. I chose to run track because I skipped out on it my junior year and realized I missed it.”
O'Neil, who is 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, was returning to the track this season after lettering in the sport as a freshman and sophomore. He was set to compete in the high jump, 400 meters and 800, but the coronavirus pandemic has forced the Ohio High School Athletic Association to cancel the spring sports season.
O'Neil is very familiar with McClure, a Green resident with his wife, Bonnie, and their five children.

“Coach McClure has watched me grow up and play sports because of his sons, and recruited me to be a decathlete,” O'Neil said.
McClure is a 1986 Green High School graduate who was the Ohio Class AAA state runner-up in the high jump and a member of Green’s 1986 Class AAA state track and field championship team. He also won a National Christian College Athletic Association national championship in the high jump, holds the Malone decathlon record and is a 1991 Malone graduate.
Basketball coaches at Grove City College and Walsh University expressed interest in O'Neil, who said he might try to walk on to the Malone basketball team.
O'Neil, who has a 3.8 cumulative GPA, helped Green's basketball team post a 22-3 record as a senior and third-year starter. The Bulldogs won a Federal League outright title and finished as the Canton Division I district runner-up to Canton McKinley. O'Neil averaged about 10 points, five rebounds and two steals per game.
Green's basketball team went 22-5 during O'Neil's junior season, 15-9 during his sophomore season and 12-12 during his freshman season.
O'Neil's junior year featured a Canton Division I district final win over Jackson and a regional final appearance in Cleveland. The Bulldogs shared the Federal League title with Jackson and Lake during O'Neil's sophomore year.
“Donovan scores in the post and can go out on the floor and drive the ball to the basket,” Green basketball coach Mark Kinsley said in February. “He will guard the other team’s best wing player and also their best post player. He is very active and does all the little things that help us win games.”
O'Neil said he plans to major in education and minor in exercise science at Malone, and appreciates the support from his parents, Tom and Larese O'Neil, and his siblings, Kevin, Hannah and Sarah.
Tom O'Neil graduated from North after competing in football and track and field, and Larese ran track and graduated from Archbishop Hoban.
